Daft Punk’s Iconic Coachella Pyramid Stage gets turned into a 2000-piece LEGO set

Four years ago, a father-son duo won the Grand Prize in the global LEGO competition Music To Our Ears! for their LEGO rendition of the Daft Punk Pyramid Stage from Coachella 2006. Although the MOC (My Own Creation) won the award, it wasn’t selected by LEGO’s internal team to be turned into a box set. However, the duo responsible for the design are hoping to Get Lucky by submitting this entry One More Time, and they’re banking on support from Around The World to help turn this one-off piece into a set that LEGO and music enthusiasts can buy and play with!

Designer: Robotrock

Not many people knew that Daft Punk’s 2006 Coachella set would be the last time they headlined the event. When the duo took the iconic pyramid-shaped stage back in 2006, they set what’s still considered a gold standard in Coachella performances – something that even nearly 2 decades later is difficult to match. However, being the elusive robots they are, Daft Punk never really decided to pull off such a feat again, and they disbanded in 2021, after 28 years together. The Coachella Pyramid is an iconic part of music history, and Robotrock – the moniker behind the LEGO set – did full justice to it with their 2,000-brick recreation of this moment.

The set features the two artists on a colorful pyramid-shaped stage, with lights inside the pyramid glowing as the duo performed music. The two artists are perched on their platform, dressed in their robot-shaped garb, while working on the mysterious electronic console that helps them produce, remix, and perform their music.

“This project began in 2020 as a fun father-son collaboration, growing into something epic as we found ourselves needing a creative escape during lockdown,” says Robotrock. “Both huge Daft Punk fans, this build is a fusion of 2 passions. I spent my teenage years listening to Homework on my Walkman, while my son’s 1st favorite baby song was Get Lucky. It felt only natural to blend our love for Daft Punk’s music with our love for LEGO. My then 8-year-old son started with a prototype built from the bricks we had at home, and I expanded on it digitally.”

The centerpiece of the design—a rotating box of transparent bricks inside a pyramid—is powered by a motor, with a set of lights dangling inside to recreate that iconic Daft Punk Alive 2007 pyramid. This 2000-piece set was a real challenge. Lego bricks aren’t typically used to create triangular shapes, so we had to get creative in finding ways to make all those angles fit together.

LEGO builders are very meticulous, and abide by a strict code of conduct to ensure bricks aren’t used in ‘illegal’ ways to create MOCs or My Own Creations. Here, Robotrock points out that LEGO doesn’t have an official Daft Punk retail set, which means the helmets being shown in the MOC can’t be bought off the shelf. Although this would mean they’re an ‘illegal’ creation, Robotrock points out that there’s a technical legality in their design since Pharrell’s upcoming LEGO biopic, Piece By Piece, features LEGO minifigures of Daft Punk too!

The LEGO Ideas Daft Punk Coachella Pyramid is currently a submission on the LEGO Ideas forum, where fans and enthusiasts can vote for their favorite fan-made LEGO creations. With enough votes, the LEGO Ideas team reviews the design and decides whether to turn it into a retail box set or not. As a massive Daft Punk fan myself, I sincerely hope they do! You too can vote for the LEGO Ideas Daft Punk Coachella Pyramid on the LEGO Ideas website here.

Cyberboard R2 looks more like a Daft Punk DJ deck than a keyboard

To some extent, computer users are like musicians, creating a beat with the thumping of their fingers on their keyboards, like hi-tech percussion instrument that reflects their player’s style. Some type slowly with breaks and pauses like a tango, while others fire in rapid taps like a salsa. Keyboards, especially mechanical ones, are instruments, both literal and musical, producing their own kind of harmony and musical style. With RGB lighting, many of these keyboards also become light shows, often changing to a specific theme or application. The Cyberboard R2, however, takes the musical analogy to a new level, where technology and art meet in a psychedelic disco party inspired by fashion.

Designer: Angry Miao

The Cyberboard R2 cites the Le Smoking as its spiritual inspiration. The 1966 original was revolutionary for its time, offering a stylish tuxedo suit for women, and became an iconic fashion style in the decades that followed. In 2013, fashion designer Hedi Slimane revived the glossy suit and transformed it into a glittery item for famed electronic music duo Daft Punk, creating a unique look that blended past and future in a glamorous way. This harmony of contrasts is what gave birth to this eye-catching keyboard, blending matte and gloss, darkness and color to create an experience that goes beyond mere typing.

The aluminum ingot that forms the body of the keyboard undergoes multiple polishing processes to create a PVD polished mirror effect. This shiny front contrasts with the textured matte finish of the keyboard’s sides, a nod to the original Le Smoking tuxedo. The RGB-lit keycaps shine like sequins on black scales reminiscent of the Daft Punk incarnation of the suit.

The keyboard’s real claim to fame, however, is its new LED panel with RGB lighting and 256-level dimming, allowing creative users more freedom in expressing their unique taste in scrolling text, animated emojis, and a kaleidoscopic display of colors. Whether you choose the Jet Black model of the keyboard, which sharply contrasts with this panel’s colors, or go all out on the Psychedelic colorway, you’re sure to catch the attention of anyone within visible range while letting your dazzling creativity free.

Of course, the Cyberboard R2 isn’t just all show, even if that’s what makes it special. Gateron Ink Black switches deliver a satisfying click to every tap. Bluetooth connectivity, which immediately turns on when you remove the USB-C cable, gives you the freedom to really go to town even when away from the computer. Remappable multimedia keys let you be the conductor of your computer orchestra, deciding what happens at each press of a key.

Of course, computer keyboards don’t need to look as colorful and bright as the Cyberboard R2. Of course, tuxedos don’t need to have shiny sequins either. But when you let your imagination and creativity fly, there’s no telling what you’ll come up with. And just like a DJ mixing music, there’s no reason you can’t create your own mix of colors on your keyboard, as long as you have a keyboard as retro-futuristic as this.

Daft Punk LEGO Helmets pay the perfect tribute to the electronic duo on the anniversary of their split

A LEGO Legacy (LEGO-cy?) for the musicians behind TRON: Legacy!

Exactly a year ago, French electronic duo Daft Punk released a cryptic video titled ‘Epilogue’ on their YouTube. The video, without any words, announced that the musicians were splitting up after nearly 3 decades of redefining the electronic disco/funk genre. To pay tribute to them, LEGO builder Eliot O’Brien built out their iconic helmets out of LEGO. The design, which has nearly 4 and a half thousand votes on the LEGO Ideas dashboard, perfectly recreates the helmets’ full-face robot-inspired design. Modeled out of silver and golden bricks respectively, these small-scale ornaments perform an incredible hat-tip (or helmet-tip) to Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, better known by their official moniker, Daft Punk!

Designer: Eliot O’Brien

Eliot’s MOC (My Own Creation) features the two helmets mounted on display stands. While he took the liberty of using chrome bricks for realism, Eliot mentions that they can be swapped out for LEGO’s own flat silver and pearl gold colors “without compromising too much on the overall look.”

“The mainly-curved shapes were a great challenge to figure out with LEGO bricks, especially with Guy-Manuel’s helmet,” Eliot mentions. He did, however, figure out a neat workaround by using (or ‘sampling’ in music parlance) the windshield from the LEGO Star Wars UCS Slave-I build.

“I am a huge fan of Daft Punk’s music and would personally love to see an idea like this become an official set”, Eliot mentions. The MOC currently has 219 days left to reach 10,000 votes for LEGO’s team to turn it into a retail box-set.

These flashy automobiles pay the perfect tribute to Daft Punk’s helmets

Consider this a timely tribute to an untimely breakup. It’s been nearly 2 months since iconic electronic duo Daft Punk called it quits after nearly 30 years of creating music together. The two musicians, famous for hiding behind their robotic personas, are arguably responsible for shaping an entire genre and a generation with their music… so it’s safe to say that the news of their disbanding affected a lot of people. Automotive designer Tom Suhas was clearly one of them.

With his tribute, Suhas combines his love for automotive design with his awe and respect for Daft Punk. The Punkmobiles (a term I coined myself) are a pair of concept vehicles modeled on Daft Punk’s iconic helmets. Each car takes key elements from either of the helmets, translating their unique features into automotive details perfectly.

The Punkmobiles have a distinct Daft Punk vibe that’s apparent almost instantly. One of the cars comes in a remarkable all-chrome finish, with details modeled on Thomas Bangalter’s helmet. The other is a golden beast, with smoother curves and a panoramic tinted skylight that’s a perfect representation of Guy-Manuel’s headpiece. Go to the back and the car even has wires as seen in Guy-Manuel’s helmet in more classic 90s variants. It’s safe to say that even though the vehicles are conceptual, they are, like their creators, electric-powered. Thomas’ car sports massive gullwing doors that extend all the way to the front, while Guy-Manuel’s vehicle sports a single-piece door that opens frontwards, lifting the glass windshield with it. Both cars come with slick headlights and taillights, while even sporting the Daft Punk branding on the wheels. I wouldn’t blame you if you had an ‘Instant Crush’ on these beauts!

Daft Punk released an extended edition of its ‘Tron: Legacy’ score

Earlier this month, it was the 10th anniversary of Tron: Legacy. Say what you will be about the film (which you can rewatch on Disney Plus), there’s no denying Daft Punk’s accompanying score was killer. And now you can listen to it in a fresh new way...

LEGO Sculpture Displays Daft Punk Lyrics: Everything Is Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Daft Punk fans will want to check out this video of a very neat LEGO build by TECHNICally Possible. It displays the words to Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger while the song plays in sync. Pretty cool huh?

Not only does this LEGO sculpture display the lyrics to the song in a cool way, but as a bonus, the GoPro used to record the video is controlled by LEGO Mindstorms. That’s pretty wild. If you’re a LEGO fan and a Daft Punk fan, this just made your day.

I could watch this video all day long and I’ve already seen it like 5 times. Some people are complaining that the words don’t move, but they are missing the point. It’s all about perspective. When the camera moves around the sculpture, the words become apparent. I give this video a B+. It would have gotten an A if it wasn’t for the camera shaking as it pauses.

I hear that he’s making a version 2.0 that’s harder, better, faster, and stronger, which only makes sense, right?

3D Printed Daft Punk Helmet: Plastic After All

Adafruit’s been on a tear with its 3D printing projects lately. Their newest creation is a 3D printed replica of the helmet worn by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. It has strips of programmable LEDs inside that are visible through the visor. Don’t expect to see well while wearing it though.

Your New Ringtone: Cat Lucky
After years of lolcats and months of Get Lucky covers, it’s pretty clear that the entire existence of the internet has been leading to this very moment… YouTube user Enjoykin created a cover of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky, replacing all the words of the song with meows. It was already my cat Lucky’s favorite song [...]
