Datamancer Keyboard Benefit Auction: RIP, Richard Nagy

We here at Technabob are big fans of Richard “Datamancer” Nagy, the craftsman responsible for high quality steampunk computers and accessories. Sadly Datamancer passed away earlier this week. While that may be stunning news to his fans, it’s even more of a loss to his family. As a token of respect and goodwill, eBay user bruteforce1889 is auctioning off a keyboard made and signed by Richard.

The Executive Keyboard Belongs in The Hudsucker Proxy

I’ve always thought that the computer keyboards you can buy at most stores are pretty dull. I’m really surprised that there aren’t more really custom keyboards available given the fact that each person really has their own style. Me, I’ve always been a fan of the Art Deco styles of the 1920s through 1940s, so this keyboard is perfect for me.

The Executive Keyboard was custom made by Richard “Datamancer” Nagy, and it is quite a lovely build. It’s got a sleek black and silver theme, along with round keys reminiscent of mechanical typewriters from days gone by. Though these keys are made with modern day mechanical switches, rated for millions of presses each.

No detail was spared in the construction of this keyboard, from the black leatherette background behind the keys to the perfectly retro-styled typeface on the keys themselves.

Of course, all of these good looks and elegant craftsmanship come at a price – the Executive Keyboard sells for $750(USD) – making it truly for executive geeks only.

Datamancer Steampunk Laptop 2.0: A Gamer’s Laptop in Shelf’s Clothing

We’ve featured Richard Nagy aka Datamancer’s steampunk laptop before, but like most modern gadgets, Datamancer’s products evolve. Unlike most modern gadgets, the second revision of his laptop is encased in wood and adorned with brass and gold.

The laptop has a full wood chassis, lacquered brass keys, semi-precious gems in place of LEDs and a gold foil map design on the lid. Good thing its hardware is far from antique: the laptop is based on an unspecified model of ASUS’ gaming laptops. It has an Intel I7 2670QM processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M GPU, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, a glossy 17.3″ 1920×1080) screen and a Super-multi DVD drive.

Clacker Steampunk Desktop Still Runs on Electricity

If you liked modder Datamancer’s steampunk laptop, you’ll go crazy over this datamanced desktop suite. The Clacker includes not just the computer itself but also a monitor, keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, speakers, table and chair. So put those coins back in your piggy bank. This is going to be pricey.

The highlight of the setup has to be the monitor: “The LCD also features an antique video projector built into the back which is powered and spins custom brass film reels while LED lighting flickers in a custom projection box, to give the impression that the image is being projected onto the LCD through the back.” Unfortunately we don’t have a video or even close-up pictures of the LCD, but if you’re sold contact Datamancer so you can talk pricing.
