Here’s a look at a few of our favorite entries from the KeyShot Colorway Challenge on Instagram.

Lamborghini Revuelto by Benoit Fraylon

Benoit Fraylon takes the Revuelto for a visual spin with his color explorations on the car’s angular body. Here we look at a matte-finish silver Revuelto, but Fraylon’s Instagram Post also explores chrome, electric blue, and a rather oddly appealing granite pattern!

Apple QuickTake 2024 by Caleb Taylor

I was today years old when I learnt that Apple actually designed (and sold) a point-and-shoot camera back in 1994. Dubbed the QuickTake, it is believed to be the first step in Apple’s digital photography dominance, and a spiritual successor to the iPhone. Caleb reinvented that point-and-shoot camera into a tiny iPhone-inspired action cam, giving it an adjustable screen, three lenses, and a few gorgeous color options in his IG post.

Meindl Boots by Bradley Brister

Bradley’s Instagram Post puts Meindl’s outdoor boots in their right setting. Nestled in a forest setting amidst some tufts of grass and rocky terrain, the boots look rather inviting with their vibrant yet outdoor-friendly color schemes. The red might be a little too eye-catching amidst the wilderness, but that yellow ocher looks absolutely divine, and for the more visually conservative, the olive green makes for a great pick.

Porsche Carrera Recaro Seat by Glen Cordle

Most sportscar interiors try to mimic the edginess of the car’s exteriors, but Glen Cordle wants variety. His Instagram Post highlights a few neat CMF options for the Porsche Carrera’s seat (manufactured by Recaro), ranging from a racy red black and white, to a rather classic houndstooth and suede variant that I honestly can’t get my eyes off of!

Fountain Pen by Rob Adams

There will come a time in our lifetimes when the fountain pen becomes as unrecognizable to younger generations as the audio cassette or floppy disk… but until then, it deserves every bit of spotlight possible. A successor to the quill, the fountain pen has remained one of the most powerful symbols of literature and even of leadership, given the fact that almost every law, treaty, and bill has been signed using a fountain pen. Rob Adams adds a bit of CMF exploration to the almighty pen in his, experimenting with classic colors like rose gold, but even pushing the boundaries with this fire-inspired variant, and even a transparent version, visible in his Instagram Post!

Yanko Design and KeyShot announce the winners of the Material Design Challenge

With hundreds of entries over the 3-week competition time period, the YDxKeyShot Material Design Challenge finally came to a close with the winners being announced this week. The three winning entries showcase an incredibly versatile approach, proving exactly how capable KeyShot 11’s Material Graph and material designing abilities are.

The three winners distinctly stand in three separate categories. The Gold winning entry from Shahin Fathi explores the ability to put a realistic froth of bubbles on top of products, the Silver winning entry from Colin Ginn explored a unique parametric ‘chocolate chip cookie’ material with a lot of versatility, and the Bronze winning entry came from Nacho Riesco, who created an alluring cracked gold-leaf on wood texture that has great potential in furniture, interior, and even fashion rendering applications.

The judges declared Shahin the unanimous Gold Winner, but there were a few strong contenders for Silver and Bronze positions. Ultimately, the judges rated the entries on creativity as well as potential to be used across various industries. We congratulate the winners and are extremely grateful to everyone who participated!

Gold Winner – Shahin Fathi

Shahin Fathi (also known on Instagram by Predexign) was unanimously selected as the winning entry for its sheer creativity and impeccable execution. Jury member Sarang Sheth said, “Loved the idea and execution. This is exactly the kind of material I was expecting to come out of this competition.” The bubbles really push KeyShot 11’s textures to the limit. They’re incredibly realistic, and a simple drag and drop of the material onto a 3D object turns it into a foamy mass that has tonnes of applications in bathware, drinkware (think beer froth it coffee crema), and potentially even outdoor water scenes!

Silver Winner – Colin Ginn

Colin Ginn secured the silver prize for his unique parametric chocolate chip cookie material. While the jury definitely found the material unique, they were impressed by the execution, the fact that it’s entirely parametric, and even the development animation that Colin created on his IG post. Jury member Janis Sne mentioned, “Collin did an outstanding job on this material challenge. I am very impressed by just looking at Collin’s Keyshot node material setup. He also made a great presentation, with a short animation of the texturing, that I highly appreciate. I think this designer really thought through everything and you can feel this love & passion into each 3D image.” The jury collectively also agreed that there was immense potential to adapt this material into a rocky, muddy ground material.

Bronze Winner – Nacho Riesco

The bronze prize was awarded to Nacho Riesco for his ‘cracked gold leaf on wood’ material. The material combined the best of both worlds, a realistic wooden texture and a cracked gold film on top. Jury member Preeti Jesudoss appreciated the “worn edges and organic-looking cracks” on the material and the jury collectively believed that the material also could potentially be used in creative art direction and even in fashion design applications.

KeyShot and Yanko Design invite designers to create innovative new materials for the popular rendering software

We’re thrilled to announce the “YDxKeyShot Material Design Challenge”, a unique opportunity for designers to explore KeyShot 11’s powerful Material Graph and 3D Paint features to create the materials of their dreams. Winners will not only be awarded free KeyShot 11 Pro licenses, but will also get to see their material on the KeyShot Cloud certified materials list. Winning renders will even be showcased on KeyShot’s startup window to thousands of KeyShot users across the world!

This is your chance to design the material of your dreams, creating something you wish everyone could use in their renders. The challenge is pretty simple. Design your own material – you could use KeyShot’s procedural textures, image files from the internet (free use non-copyrighted), or click images of your own and edit them to create your own resources. The YDxKeyShot Material Design Challenge has no rules – just have fun and keep creating! Looking for a nice carbon fiber material? Create your own! Found a nice terrazzo texture at your local cafe? Click a picture and turn it into a material! Need a smudgy, scratched glass surface for that photoreal smartphone render? Here’s the perfect opportunity to make it and share it with the world.

Once you design your material, how you present it matters too. Apply your material to an appropriate product and create a render that highlights your material in the best way possible. For example, if you designed a wooden material, apply it to a piece of furniture. If you made a ceramic material, showcase it on a ceramic object that’ll wow everyone! You can create as many render images as you want (or even a video), exploring the product in different angles, or even up close if your material is detailed. Also, don’t forget to show us what the material looks like on Keyshot’s iconic Material Ball!

The YDxKeyshot Material Design Challenge will be judged by Janis Sne – 3D Sportswear Designer at RKTFT Studios and Nike, Preeti Jesudoss – Senior Creative Head at Asian Paints, and Sarang Sheth – Editor-in-Chief at Yanko Design. To participate, upload your renders on Instagram (a few renders of a product, and one of the material ball) and tag + follow the @yankodesign and @keyshot3d accounts while also using the #YDxKeyShot hashtag. You can get your hands on the material ball 3D model and a free trial of the latest KeyShot 11 rendering software by downloading it on KeyShot’s website. To unlock the trial, use the Trial License Code KSYANKO22 during installation. Participants in the KeyShot x Yanko Design Challenge must be above the age of 18.

This entirely translucent wireless speaker concept brings honest transparency to consumer electronics

Our 2022 began on an incredibly exciting note with the #DoWhatFloatsYourboAt Design Challenge and we can’t be more thrilled to announce the winners! Instead of the conventional 3 winners, this time we’ve chosen 5 winning entries – Gold, Silver, Bronze, a special Student prize, as well as a new Honorable Mention that we added at the last minute because of how impressed we were with the entries! The challenge saw more than 1500 people signing up to participate and clocked in nearly 400 entries by the time the competition ended. The jury, headed by Katharina Stärck, Ayush Singh Patel, and Sarang Sheth arrived at 5 entries that delivered on the competition’s brief of rendering/designing the boAt Stone 1200F Wireless Speaker to make it look impactful and alluring. Over the course of this week and the next, we’ll introduce you to the winners and their designs.

The Bronze Prize went to Priyanshu Jaiswal (also known by his Instagram moniker @stang.id) for creating a speaker that focused not just on audio clarity but on literal clarity too! Priyanshu’s rendition of the boAt Stone 1200F turned the wireless speaker translucent, giving us a glimpse of the electronics and components within. In turn, this turns the speaker less into a mysterious monolithic block, and into a sonic artpiece that lets you admire the beauty within the speaker.

“Feelings and emotions are what drive our lives”, Priyanshu told YD. Pointing at other designs that focus on external detailing rather than showing off the interiors, Jaiswal mentions how a translucent speaker can captivate a user by allowing them to really see the speaker for what it is. Nothing hidden behind an opaque fascia, everything is visible to the observer, sort of like the Transparent Speaker or Harman Kardon’s Soundsticks. Priyanshu’s entry immediately stood out to the jury because of the fact that he didn’t see the speaker for what it was, but rather for what it could be. It involved detailing the insides of the 3D model, fitting audio drivers, a PCB, batteries, and appropriate wiring into the model, before rendering the final piece.

“I saw a teardown video of boAt 1200F… It took me by surprise, how well engineered the product is at such cost”, Priyanshu mentioned. “So I wanted to appreciate that through design and also have a nice product story at the same time.”

Priyanshu is an Industrial Design student from India. He describes himself as “a mad scientist” with an “intrinsic desire to explore new disciplines to add to my repertoire of knowledge.” As a Bronze Winner of the #DoWhatFloatsYourboAt Design Challenge, Priyanshu wins INR 5,000 boAt Products + KeyShot 10 Pro License (free upgradable to KeyShot 11).

The boAt 1200F speaker gets a deliciously colorful makeover with this Silver Award-winning design concept

Following Alex Casabo in second place, designer Lidia Gómez charmed the jury with her #DoWhatFloatsYourboAt Design Challenge entry’s subtle-yet-eye-catching color palette. The happy, almost summery colors of the speaker were a wonderful pick since they complement most interiors as well as most outfits – as opposed to the loud, in-your-face reds, blues, or blacks seen on other wireless speakers from companies like *cough* JBL *cough*.

“[I] decided to keep the original design of the boAt Stone 1200F speaker but I’ve chosen a color palette that expresses the wildness and young spirit of the brand. In the shots, I’ve also tried to reflect the fresh and powerful style that characterizes this speaker in a style that ‘floats my boat’,” Lidia told Yanko Design.

“The first step that I took in my work process was to choose a vivid and energetic colour palette that represents the boAt style”, Lidia said about her design approach. “Once I made my choice, I started playing around with different compositions and lightings in Keyshot, always taking into account that the renders had to be clean and minimalist to allow the viewer to focus on the lead of the scene: the boAt Stone 1200F speakers.”

Lidia Gómez is an industrial designer based in Spain. Apart from working in a research center as a mechanical engineer, for more than a year, Lidia has been exploring the world of product design. In her projects, she combines functionality and aesthetics with a special emphasis on composition and visualization. As a Silver Winner of the #DoWhatFloatsYourboAt Design Challenge, Lidia wins INR 10,000 boAt Products + KeyShot 10 Pro License (free upgradable to KeyShot 11). She even wins $10,000 worth Lifetime Access to Creator Club Master Classes on How to Succeed at Crowdfunding. Creator Club is the first community-based membership and e-learning platform for tech and design startups that help you master the product development process, using crowdfunding (Kickstarter/Indiegogo), e-Commerce, Amazon, and other strategies to bring ideas to life and turn them into products that drive sales.

Yanko Design and boAt Lifestyle announce the Gold Winner of their first Instagram Design Challenge

Our 2022 began on an incredibly exciting note with the #YDxBoatDesignChallenge and we can’t be more thrilled to announce the winners! Instead of the conventional 3 winners, this time we’ve chosen 5 winning entries – Gold, Silver, Bronze, a special Student prize, as well as a new Honorable Mention that we added at the last minute because of how impressed we were with the entries! Over the course of this week and the next, we’ll introduce you to the winners and their designs.

The Gold Prize for the #YDxBoatDesignChallenge went to Alex Casabo, for his creative interpretation which turned the wireless speaker into a veritable arena, with the speaker on stage surrounded by instruments, props, and lights to match.

“After doing some research about BOAT, I quickly saw the young and fun side of the brand,” said Alex. “So that got me inspired for an open-air concert on a summer night. Of course, BOAT is the protagonist, the lead singer of the show, who stands in the center. It’s accompanied by the drums, the guitar, and everything is illuminated by the BOAT spotlights”, he added.

Alex Casabo is a freelance industrial design engineer from Barcelona who specialized in 3D modeling and product visualization. He has worked in different design disciplines like industrial, interior, and graphic design and as a professor in some design universities from Barcelona, like Elisava, LCI and UPC. As a Gold Winner of the YDxBoatDesignChallenge, Alex wins INR 10,000 boAt Products + KeyShot 10 Pro License (free upgradable to KeyShot 11). Along with these, Alex also wins a scholarship to Offsite’s June cohort. Offsite is a 12-week online program disrupting design education and offers a real-world view of the design profession through the instruction of industry leaders.

Formerly known as the Michelin Challenge, the “Movin’On Challenge Design” is now accepting entries for 2022!

With its new brand name and its newly unveiled theme for the 2022 leg of the competition, the Movin’On Challenge Design is all set to revolutionize the world of transport and make it sustainable, equitable, and beneficial to everyone.

Formerly known as the Michelin Challenge Design, the international competition has a rich 21-year history when it comes to fostering and encouraging innovation from the brightest minds in the design industry. Over the last two decades, the challenge issued a broad brief to designers, asking them to create concept electric vehicles, conceptual Le Mans race cars, and even its 2021 brief — “Respect”, a call to end the mobility divide between people from different communities, walks of life, and with different abilities. Michelin Challenge Design became Movin’On Challenge Design in 2020, reflecting its integration as a featured program of the Movin’On Summit, the world’s foremost gathering for sustainable mobility. Created and inspired by Michelin, the Summit brings together large companies, startups, public and academic authorities, NGOs, and international organizations, as well as a community of experts and professionals to move from ambition to action.

The Movin’On Challenge Design now enters its 2022 edition with its competition theme: DELIVERED. The brief of the theme is to invite designers to focus on logistical equality and equitability, or being able to get goods and services to the people who need them. Nearly 30 percent of the world’s population lives outside urban centers and an equal number reside in economically depressed urban areas with sub-standard infrastructure. The 2022 Movin’On Challenge invites participants to design a mobility solution to provide essential services to all people in a safe, efficient, and sustainable way. The challenge isn’t even a transportation-focused one anymore. It’s open to artists, designers, engineers, architects, city planners, creatives, or anyone with a strong vision to build a more equitable, sustainable future by considering mankind’s need for and relation to mobility. Participants are encouraged to:

  • Identify the people or communities that your solution would serve, by including related research, and how it will improve their quality of life.
  • Explain how your idea is built on the foundation of inclusive design to enhance the human experience, and not simply to make services more convenient for those who already have access.
  • Illustrate how your innovative solution will deliver services to people.

The 2022 Movin’On Challenge Design is now accepting entries up until its submission deadline of March 1st, 2022. The Challenge’s top three winners will be announced at a Movin’On global event in June and concurrently through Movin’On social media channels. Through its first 21 challenges, the competition has received more than 14,700 entries from 136 countries. Scroll down to see a few of our favorites from the 2021 challenge, with its theme: RESPECT.

Crosswing by Drew Spahn

The Crosswing’s clever design turns a prosthetic leg into a skateboard that the prosthetic-wearer can use to skateboard – either for recreation or transportation. The prosthetic leg features a fold-out skateboard that when closed, provides the same walking experience as a prosthetic leg but when opened out, offers a riding experience that compares to a skateboard or pair of skates! The multipurpose artificial limb “turns a disadvantage into an advantage”, mentions Spahn, a fourth-year industrial design student at Kean University.

T.Flex by Siavash Jafari Jozani

T.Flex is an Adaptive Extreme Sports Wheelchair that aims to redefine the pleasure of having an active lifestyle with an enjoyable machine for individuals with limited lower-body mobility. Traditional wheelchairs are designed to be steady and balanced, a feature that becomes a problem for people who want their mobility solutions to be flexible, freeing, and frankly, thrilling. The T.Flex incorporates an innovative steering and a flexible structure to realize this freedom. Moreover, the riding position is highly customizable to meet the needs of individuals with diverse body characteristics, including paraplegics, above-knee amputees, below-knee amputees, and a host of other disabilities. While incredibly unconventional as a design solution, the T.Flex does justice to the 2021 challenge’s theme, giving respect to its user and allowing even the disabled to enjoy the thrills of racing and extreme sports!

Orbit by Seongha Lee, Byunghyun Bae, Byungyoon Jung and Minsun Lee

A modern solution for a modern problem, the Orbit is a mass-transit system designed to provide public transport for people with agoraphobia. The pandemic has drawn major attention to the need to socially distance, although people with agoraphobia find it difficult to be around other people, to begin with. Orbit aims to hit two birds with one stone, providing a public transport system that’s accommodating for all, while still creating a private, personalized travel experience. The larger vehicle acts as a ‘movable nest’ for smaller pods that can independently dislodge from the main body of the Orbit and complete last-mile pickups and drop-offs for people. The main vehicle covers fixed frequent routes while the individual pods provide access in remote areas, picking them up from their locations and taking them to the main vehicle, which transports everyone in their own enclosed bubble!

Tramo by Stefan Perriard

Tramo imagines transportation in a world without cars. Designed for the futuristic car-free city, Tramo offers an equitable mode of transport that’s safe, human-centric, and truly for everyone. The design adopts the shape of a pod-like platform that traverses across the city’s roadways. Its unique design makes space for people who want to stand or sit, as well as for wheelchairs and baby strollers. Designer Stefan Perriard describes Tramo as “a flexible solution with no need for stations — like a moving sidewalk” that you can hop onto or hop off from.

Concept Holosafe by Kiran Babu

The Indian Railways is among one of the world’s largest rail networks, although 41% of its accidents and 63% of its fatalities happen OUTSIDE the train, on railway crossings. Kiran Babu’s Concept Holosafe aims at making the railway crossing not only safer but much more informative too. There’s a sense of complacency when you see the barricade descend at a railway crossing, and most people simply assume that they’ve got a reasonable window of time to cross before the train ACTUALLY arrives because the barricade doesn’t tell you how long you have to wait. This attitude is so prevalent at unmanned crossings in India that the government has decided to completely close off all unmanned crossings in the interest of public safety. Kiran Babu’s solution is a novel one that promotes safety by eliminating complacency and replacing it with actionable information. While it isn’t entirely possible to prevent people from crossing over at unmanned railway crossings, Babu’s solution implements a holographic counter that acts as a ‘traffic light’ of sorts. The holographic barricade creates a virtual ‘red zone’ with a countdown clock to let people know how long they’ll be waiting at the crossing, and when the train passes by, it turns into a green zone with a countdown clock too, giving people a realistic idea of the time they’ve got before the zone turns red again. Sounds a lot like a certain Squid Game event, but hey… this one’s actually designed to SAVE lives!

Envisioned in partnership with iconic Italian brands Alessi and Kartell, the Parmigiano Reggiano® Design Challenge invited the design community to help “elevate the human experience through products that celebrate authenticity across the journey of enjoying a meal.”

The open competition, which ended on the 15th of October, saw nearly 500 submissions that were judged by an esteemed panel of judges that comprised Mauro Porcini, Karim Rashid, Ayse Birsel + Bibi Seck, and Pietro Rovatti. The competition’s winners (some of which are showcased below) span across 3 culinary-related categories – Cooking, Eating, and Sitting… and the jury awarded the overall Best Of The Show Winner prize to Qing Yan for designing Cillio – a range of ‘cheese cutlery’ that bordered on kitchen jewelry!

Cillio Cheese Cutlery by Qing Yan (Best Of The Show Winner)

The Cillio celebrates cheese in its unique way by being a functional piece of art designed around the versatile world of cheeses. Elevating the experience of cheese cutting to a ‘ritual’, Qing Yan’s cutlery set takes inspiration from leaves, plants, and organic forms as a reference to the food tools used in earlier times, while bringing it effectively into modern society as ‘kitchen jewelry’ that celebrates all kinds of cheeses from around the world! Bifur is a nifty little compact scale that comes in the shape of a foldable trivet-style structure and also packs a kitchen timer in it. Designed to be small yet effective, and the kind of tool that becomes indispensable around the kitchen, the Bifur lets you measure the weight of ingredients during food prep, and time your cook too, once it begins cooking. When all’s said and done, the device folds down like a tripod into a tiny baton that you can easily stash in one of your kitchen drawers!

Ember by Adrian Perez (Silver – Cooking Category)

Designed to make baking accessible, Ember is a pretty unique little device that sits on your stovetop, using the stove’s flame to create the ideal conditions for baking. Working sort of like how a dutch oven does, the Ember does a much more advanced job when it comes to even heat distribution… plus it even has a convenient temperature indicator on the front that tells you the reading of the inside of the oven so you can regulate the stove flame accordingly.

Love Birds by Kickie Chudikova (Gold – Eating Category)

European cuisine will have you believe that salt and pepper are the ultimate condiments. Found at virtually every restaurant table (and even some at home), salt and pepper are a culinary match made in heaven, so Kickie Chudikova turned them into love birds! The Love Birds is a salt and pepper shaker set shaped like two birds kissing each other! The shakers have their respective openings at the beaks, which cleverly align together when sitting on the table to effectively ‘shut’ the openings to prevent moisture from getting into the shakers. Coincidentally, the feature also adds a touch of romance and cuteness to the table, making it perfect for date night!

Duet by Ed Ko (Silver – Eating Category)

Duet is a clever microplane grater that also comes with a size-appropriate measuring cup attached to it. Designed in a way that makes grating easy overall, the cup helps prop the grater up so you can hold it easily, while the cup itself comes with markings on the side that let you measure out how much you’ve grated. Pretty useful for anything from hard cheeses to even plants like garlic or ginger.

Cup by Alan Hung (Silver – Sitting Category)

Seating forms an integral part of the dining experience, which is why it was included as a category for the Parmigiano Reggiano Design Challenge too. The Cup chair by Alan Hung won the silver award for its refined aesthetic that took inspiration from food trays. The upper part of the chair features a molded veneer shape that resembles the lipped profile of food trays, while it rests on a rather comfortably shaped molded plastic base, that acts like the tabletop surface on which the food tray rests.

Hybrid by Stephen He (Bronze – Eating Category)

Hybrid is a chair that explores a rather unusual combination of materials that also have a role to play in food and dining. The chair comes with an aluminum base (aluminum can be found in all kinds of utensils) and a cork seat + backrest (cork is often used to make trivets to keep hot utensils on). The cork lends a softness to the chair, while the aluminum structure provides strength while being lightweight. Designer Stephen He also points out that both materials can stand the test of time, and if need be, can easily be recycled too!

‘Innovative Bicycle Helmet with auto-deploying neck airbag’ wins Bronze at the YD x KeyShot Design Challenge

Armed with two features that make bicycling much safer, Marco Filipic’s Envoy Helmet design for the YD x KeyShot Design Challenge takes on both preventive as well as protective measures to safeguard the rider. To ensure that the rider avoids accidents in the first place, the helmet comes with a fold-out rear-view heads-up mirror that lets them see potential vehicles approaching from the rear, while in the unfortunate event of an accident, the helmet has its own auto-deploying airbag that protects the neck and upper spine when the rider falls.

“Cycling to work every morning gave me time to think about how a helmet could be improved in terms of safety”, said Marco to Yanko Design. “Looking backward and sideways to turn, seemed to me it could be improved with some kind of aid; during a little research I noticed that some rear-view mirrors can be mounted on sunglasses and helmets, so I thought, how might we include it on the helmet and make it easy to use?

“The neck is exposed to falls and is a very sensitive area to impacts”, Marco stated as yet another pitfall with regular helmets. To make the Envoy safer, his redesign sported an airbag concealed in the base of the helmet, that deployed the instant it detected the rider falling. The neck-cushion-shaped airbag would wrap around the back of the neck, providing that extra bit of cushioning to ensure the rider’s neck doesn’t receive any shock while falling.

Unanimously declared the Bronze Winner by the YD x KeyShot Design Challenge Jury Panel, Marco also wins an Apple HomePod Mini along with a KeyShot HD Licence.
