This doorknob ambiently glows at night so you’re never fumbling in the dark

Here’s a product that just embodies the aspects of sensible design. Meet the Illumiknobi (jury’s out on the name), a glowing knob that begins emitting light when it senses you’re near it. The doorknob runs for an entire year on a single coin-cell battery and comes with a proximity sensor that transforms it into an ambient guiding light, helping you locate doorknobs in the dark… so you’re not fiddling around looking for handles, or worse, banging your shin against furniture or possibly tripping over your cat.

Love the idea but maybe they could ditch the ‘hole-cluster design’ for something more universally aesthetic. An arabesque pattern, stars, or rays of light perhaps?

Double Door Knob Use

TIBOU is the first collection of luxury hardware developed just for kid!. The primary function of handles and knobs is to open a door or drawer, but kids often double them as a hanger to place their jacket or a bag. The object loses its main function and it becomes difficult even impossible to open the door. To account for this duality, all the elements of the TIBOU collection present a small hook on their front face, giving the child a perfect place to hang their belongings without hampering the opening of the door or drawer.

Sanitary Hand Saver

We’ve all thought about it: you use a public restroom, wash your hands and then have to touch an unsanitary doorknob to leave the restroom?! Gross. It’s no secret that not everyone who touches that doorknob is washing their hands. Ewwww. What’s the point in washing your hands anyway?! The Foot Latch was designed with this problem in mind. After you’re finished doing your business, just use your foot to unlatch the door and go on your way with fresh and clean hands!

Handgun Doorknobs

handgun door knobs Handgun Doorknobs
Open the door with a bang. These door knobs, or probably more accurately door handles, are called Bang Bang and are designed by Russian design firm Napalm. They are designed to look like the famed Russian semi-automatic Makarov pistol. To open the door, you pull the trigger, presumably with a satisfyingly badass clicking sound. We don’t condone violence here but we certainly condone killer design and innovative door hardware. (via iihih)

Concave Lock Will Help You Open the Door in the Dark

The light on our front porch got busted recently, so it took me several minutes to get the door open. Not because the lock was jammed or broken, but because I couldn’t get my key into the slot properly and had to fumble around with a light (that was stupidly attached to my keychain, of all places.) A solution to this problem? The Concave Lock.

Concave Lock

It’s a concept design by Poh Liang-Hock, which basically adds a glowing ring around the keyhole so you can find it easily even in the dark. Its concave shape also helps to ‘funnel’ in the key to the keyhole so you don’t waste any time trying to figure out where it is.

The Concave Lock is also a 2012 IDEA Awards entry. I hope it wins – and I hope it gets produced.

Gunshot Doorknob: Pull the Trigger to Open

Most people probably won’t hold or fire any guns in their lifetime, except maybe when they’re in the military, if they’re actors, when they’re playing video games, or if they’ve got one of these Gunshot Doorknobs.

Gunshot DoorknobTrigger happy folks will probably want to replace their regular doorknobs with these. Unfortunately, they don’t really look like much like guns attached to your door, like those Bang Bang Doorknobs did. That takes away points for aesthetics, but the design does make mass producing it easier – if it ever gets picked up by a manufacturer, that is.

Gunshot Doorknob1

But just like the latter, all you have to do is pull the trigger – and then the door – to leave or enter a room.

The Gunshot Doorknob was designed by Hyunwoo Park.

I Shot the Sheriff

And before you squeal on me, just know that the gun was a doorknob; a Gunshot Doorknob! I agree that we have enough of violence that permeates our subconscious mind. But for those who love lightsabers and think BB Guns are good fun, a quirky knob will be just that….quirky!

Grabit Unlocks Only If It Recognizes Your Fingerprint

Security is a big deal these days. And if you think normal and traditional locks just don’t cut it, then here’s a concept that I’m sure you’ll find interesting: the Grabit.

GrabitIt’s basically a door knob with an integrated fingerprint scanner. The door will only unlock if it recognizes the fingerprint of the opener, so it keeps unwanted and unknown people out. The scanner is positioned just right so you can have your print scanned as you turn the door handle.

Grabit is also equipped with a LED indicator that will blink red if it’s not closed properly to remind the person to shut the door right.

Grabit was designed by Donguk Seo.
