We love a few menacing automotive designs—whether they’re powerful cars or sleek and fast e-scooters. In August, we saw an avalanche of fast, super cool, and one-of-a-kind automotive designs at Yanko Design. From killer speed to dashing good looks to impenetrable safety standards, every vehicle we featured at YD broke some design barrier for us, and hopefully, they did the same for you. Hence, we’ve curated a collection of automotive designs that we feel were the best of the lot. From NASCAR’s first electric racecar to a unique electric motor with a pedal drive—these automotive designs are a pleasure to see!

1. Twike 5

Designed by automaker TWIKE GmbH, the Twike 5 is a pedal hybrid vehicle intended for those who want a sustainable mode of transportation. It is a three-wheel trike, equipped with one wheel in the front and two at the back. This innovative vehicle combines an electric motor with a pedal drive. It is a two-seat trike, weighing around 600 kilograms, and it can reach speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour. It can travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge.

2. Pure x McLaren Special Edition E-Scooter

Designed by Pure Electric, this is an official McLaren edition e-scooter. This e-scooter is designed to change urban transport for good. It is a foldable commuter with electric motor power and an improved range. It features the signature papaya color and a deep black finish. It offers 710 watts of peak power for enhanced acceleration, as well as better performance on hills. It can cover a range of 31 miles on a full charge, which is great if you’re someone who commutes the city in one go.

 3. Xpeng AeroHT eVTOL Flying Car

4. NASCAR Electric Racecar Prototype

NASCAR debuted their first prototype electric racecar at the Chicago Street Race. The car’s limit was tested at the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, and it is just two-tenths away from the average time of a V8-powered NASCAR racer. The electric racer is amped with twice the acceleration and commendable braking ability, but its weight causes limitations on the corners, as it cannot go faster. Currently, the vehicle is being tested as much as possible without damaging any of the hardware.

5. The MP4/4 Special Edition E-scooter

Pure Electric designed the MP4/4 Special Edition e-scooter, inspired by the form of the McLaren team’s Formula 1 car driven by Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The e-scooter is amped with speedy performance and showcases the famous color-blocked red and white livery. It delivers a stable, sturdy, and controlled e-ride experience, powered by a 710W peak power output and a 31 mph range. It is an excellent ride for hill climbing and acceleration, as it doesn’t consume too much battery power.

E-cargo bike lets you transfer cargo without much effort

If you work in a business that needs to transport cargo but not that heavy that needs an actual truck, there are few options in the market that can fit that need. And of course if you’re looking for something that is eco-friendly and easy to manage and maintain, then of course the options become fewer. A German startup is offering something that operate like a mini HD truck but also seems like a pedaled dump truck.

Designer: Dynamic Drives Giessen

The Intelectra E-cargo bike is a four-wheeled, pedal-based tool that can work in cargo transport in urban areas. It is also easy to drive around in as it uses the INTELECTRIC drive system (iSHS) that turns your pedaling power into up to 250 Watts of electrical power to drive the 270-lb truck-cycle forward. So the driver will not be so stressed in “carrying” the cargo even as they pedal to their destination.

It actually looks like a regular bike or trike but with a rear cargo box with an aluminum frame at the back that is 4-foot-long, can carry up to 450kg (driver included) and can load up to 12 euro boxes. The square aluminum tubes are supported by tall, plastic-rimmed wheels. The pedal drive that extends past the wheelbase lets the driver sit upright as they power the bike through their pedaling.

The purely electric drive technology gives the Intelectra a maintenance-free system so there’s no need for things like oiling and less wear and tear. The drive system can go for 30,000 km without needing any maintenance. It can travel up to 93 km per charge while the battery can charge for an hour and a half. There are L and XL options with the latter being one euro crate width longer.

The Diode e-Bike’s Design is Cyberpunk Minimalism at its Very Best

Relying on the basic building blocks of both automobiles as well as technology, Tien Hung’s Diode e-bike concept sports a neo-minimalist design that celebrates the future of the electric power train. The bike’s form is practically invisible barring one singular horizontal pillar that travels from dashboard to taillight, and the large battery module located under it. Despite its bare-basics approach, the e-bike doesn’t compromise on essentials, with a powerful rear-wheel drivetrain, a comfortable seat, USB charging points located near the bike’s charger inlet, and a digital dashboard that does everything from serving as a speedometer to even having its built-in GPS.

Designer: TienHung.Design

The beauty of the Diode lies in its abstraction of the conventional motorcycle shape. Most motorcycles are sculpted like horses, evoking the feeling of sitting on a saddle with a wild animal in your reigns. The fuel tank has an almost sinewy shape, resembling the torso of a stallion or bronco. All that goes out the window with the Diode, which takes a form-following-function route to design something that’s sleek. The fact that EV technology allows for cars/bikes to be more liberal with their component placements helps this further.

The entire e-bike’s design highlights how technological advancements have allowed two-wheelers to be more expressive with their forms. The electric powertrain means components don’t need to be arranged in a certain way. The battery sits between the riders legs, assuming whatever shape you need it to be in, while the motor sits mounted against the rear wheel, opening up the Diode’s overall design to a great degree of minimalistic expression.

The area where a fuel tank would once be located is now an empty cavity in which you can store your phone, TWS earbuds, and wallet. Right above it is the Diode’s charging port, along with two USB-A outlets that let you juice your phone and other gadgets directly using the EV-s battery pack. The headlight and taillight are minimal yet expressive too, relying on LED strips that can be formed in any shape rather than the traditional parabolic reflector lamp seen on most cars and bikes.

Lastly, the Diode gets a neat white and black paint job with metallic accents, giving it that futuristic appeal popularized by most EVs today.
