Smart Power Strip brings its home automation dreams to Kickstarter

Smart Power Strip landed its way into the final round of our Insert Coin competition the other week at Engadget Expand, and while it didn't take home one of the giant foam commemorative coins (or the prize money attached), it was an impressive feat nonetheless. Not taking home the gold means that Roger Yiu and team could use the money even more. The project just hit Kickstarter, in hopes of snagging $100,000. A pledge of $99 will get you one of the smart outlets, so you can bring a touch of low-cost, smartphone-controlled automation to your home. LG’s cheapest Ultra HDTV starts at $3,500, OLED TV drops to $10,000

LG's Ultra HDTV lineup reaches five models, starting at $3,500 OLED TV drops to $10k

LG had its own Ultra HD news to reveal here at CEDIA 2013, and first up are two new edge LED lit LCD TVs joining the family. The cheaper models the company announced in Korea last month are coming to the US this month, with the 65-inch LA9650 (shown above) rocking a $5,000 price tag, and the 55-inch coming home for just $3,500 -- even less than we'd expected. Coming along with the new TVs is an LG "Sound Plate" it first showed off at IFA (pictured after the break). There's no price or release date yet, but expect it to hit in Q4. Beyond the new TVs, LG is also slashing prices on its existing lineup, with the higher end LA9700 models in the same sizes dropping to $6,500 and $4,500. Concerned about needing HDMI 2.0 in the future? We don't have firm answers yet, but LG says it's working on a solution for existing models. Even its 55-inch curved OLED TV is getting a price break, dropping down to $10,000 at retail from its previous launch price of $14,000.

Meet the judges for Expand NY's Insert Coin competition Ryan Block, Ben Heck, Hilary Mason and Peter Rojas

There are but two days left (including today) for all you makers and would-be entrepreneurs to submit your projects for our Insert Coin competition for Expand NY. And, you may be wondering, who, exactly will be judging the worthiness of your work? Well, MAKE Magazine Editor-in-Chief Mark Frauenfelder will once again be helping present the five finalists on stage, and we've got quartet of tech industry insiders who will decide which project gets our $10,000 Judge's Choice prize. (There's also a $15,000 winner chosen by you, our dear readers.) Our judges are:

We're getting more and more impatient waiting for Expand New York with every subsequent speaker announcement -- and we've got five more names to lay on you right now. This November, we'll be joined by Wikimedia's director of mobile, Tomasz Finc, Leap Motion's director of developer relations, Avinash Dabir, The One Laptop Per Child Association's chairman and CEO, Rodrigo Arboleda, founder / CEO of Voltaic Systems Shayne McQuade and Michael Carroll, a professor of law at American University Washington College of Law and founding member of Creative Commons.

And, of course, we've already announced a number of folks who will be joining us on November 9th and 10th, including LeVar Burton, Reggie Watts, Ben Heck, Peter Molyneux, Ben Huh and speakers from companies like Google, Sony, Pebble, Adafruit and The Electronic Frontier Foundation -- and we've still got more to come. Insert Coin: New Challengers was far and away one of the highlights of March's first-ever Engadget Expand, and we're excited to see what the maker community has in store for round two. Time's running out to get those projects in -- we're closing the door on submissions on September 27th. Help us decide who deserves free tickets to Expand NY

Last week, we flipped the switch on our #ExpandThrowback contest from the submission phase to the voting phase, meaning the winners of our contest are in your capable hands. What is this contest about again, you ask? Simply put, we wanted to see what old technology our readers could dig up in their garages, attics, closets, glove compartments, et cetera, thus paying homage to the old as we prepare to celebrate the new at this November's Expand NY event. One lucky winner gets an all-expense paid trip to the event and four runner-ups get a $250 gift card to update their old technology.*

With every subsequent post, our excitement for Expand New York grows -- and this is a particularly good one. We might go so far as saying that this is our most exciting speaker post yet, but we'll leave that for you to decide. Improvisational musician / comedian Reggie Watts will be on stage discussing and demoing his sampling setup. We've received hundreds of thousands (of kilobytes) worth of submissions for our #ExpandThrowback contest and we want to thank those who valiantly opened up their closets, garages, attics, or just pivoted to the other side of their desk and snapped photos of their best in retro tech.

We've gathered as a team at Engadget HQ and winnowed the pickins' down to our top 20 favorites. Now it's time to turn the decision on who wins over to you.

Can you feel it? The anticipation's building for Expand NY, thanks in no small part to our fantastic lineup of speakers that includes LeVar Burton, Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky and Master Modder Ben Heck. Well, the list of luminaries just got longer and more lustrous. We're thrilled that Joi Ito, Director of the famed MIT Media Lab and Sonny Vu, CEO and Founder of Misfit Wearables will be joining us in New York. Equally exciting will be the presence of Inhabitat.com Editor-in-Chief Jill Fehrenbacher, Memoto co-founder Oskar Kalmaru and Pat Yongpradit, the Director of Education for Code.org. Get pumped, people, it's only a couple months until you get to see them all live in Gotham.
