Super Mario Cat Bros.

Nintendo recently revealed that it’s giving Hollywood another chance to get Super Mario right with a full-length animated feature from Illumination Entertainment. It’s gotta be better than that first movie right? The bar is definitely set very low. But if you ask me, there’s only one way to go for a Super Mario movie. Cats! Duh! Something like this new fan film that captures the fun of the original Super Mario Bros. game and adds a kitty. Specifically, it stars a cat as Mario.

There’s no creature better suited to climbing, jumping, wedging itself into pipes, and getting hard to reach coins. Super Mario Cat Bros. was directed by Russian filmmaker Mike “Mr.TVCow” Tivikoff; who co-stars in the video as Luigi. Luigi is a human, so not sure how they are brothers. Luigi quickly follows Mario on his quest to save Princess Peach. The pair face all of the usual obstacles of the Mushroom Kingdom.

It is the cutest thing ever to see a cat performing all of the jumps, entering warp pipes, throwing fireballs and more. This is a very well done video and now I want to see more of their adventures.

Link Wants All the Money in “Race for Rupees”

How many hours have you spent smashing pots in the various Legend of Zelda games in your endless quest for rupees? Too many. Even though there have been many short films, comics and cartoons about Link, they always leave this activity out for some reason.

Smashing pots for rupees is what it’s all about. Everyone knows that. Animator Callegos Yavolitak created Race for Rupees, a fan film that celebrates this. It is nice to know that we’re not alone in our obsession to destroy and gain in-game virtual wealth.

This is a fun little film and very well done. It’s sure to bring a smile to the face of any Zelda fan.

Fan Made LEGO Jurassic Park Stop Motion Short Film: Clever Girls and Boys

Digital Wizards Studios makes LEGO stop motion films. To prove to his 8-year old daughter Hailee that they could do anything with LEGO, Digital Wizards’ Paul Hollingsworth, Hailee and his friends recreated some of the key moments in Jurassic Park. They used about $100,000 worth of LEGO, not to mention a variety of audio and video recording equipment and three months of their time to create the fun short film.

Haley’s main contribution is in animating Tim in the scene where he refuses to let go of an electric fence. Check out the finished short:

Here’s a peek at the hard work – and play! – that went into making the short:

Take a trip to Digital Wizards’ YouTube page to see more of their short films. If you want to learn more about making LEGO films, Paul recommends reading Sarah Herman’s book Bricks Flicks: A Comprehensive Guide to Making Your Own Stop-motion LEGO Movies.

Fan-Made Doctor Who Series 8 Trailer

This fan-made Doctor Who trailer for series 8 is pretty neat. It features Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Jenny Coleman as Clara Oswald, his latest companion.

Whovian John Smith’s trailer may not have Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, or even any running, but it’s is a nicely stylized trailer that leaves you wanting more. It also wraps up nicely and makes perfect sense, unlike a Steven Moffat episode or story arc. The trailer is simply titled “Rain”.

The new Doctor lands this August on BBC. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what this new older Doctor has in store for us. It should be a lot of fun.
