Apple Arcade exclusives have to be better than Frogger

Let's get one thing clear right away: Some Apple Arcade games will be fine. They'll be good, even. Sayonara Wild Hearts looks like a rapid-fire, neon-streaked music video in game form, while Jenny LeClue is a spooky and dense investigative experience...

Tiny LEGO Arcade Cabinets: Insert Brick to Play

If I had a Bitcoin for every quarter I dropped into an arcade machine back in the 1980s, I would have been on the top of Forbes’ list of wealthiest people. Alas, my coins are long gone, pumped into the bellies of Dig Dug, BattleZone, and Tempest machines. If you have a fond place in your heart for classic arcade machines like I do, check out these sweet LEGO arcade cabinets.

BuildBetterBricks makes these teensy, minimal arcade cabinets that are perfectly scaled for your minifigs. Despite their minimal use of bricks, they do a great job capturing the spirit of the classics, like Q*Bert (Q*Brick), Centipede (Brickpede), and Frogger (Froggy). Each one comes in kit form, complete with cabinet artwork and screen graphics decals.

Best of all, these tiny machines are just $7 each, so you can build out a complete arcade for your minifigs to hang out at without a whole lot of spare change. They also have a miniature claw machine and a miniature football table so you can complete your mini arcade. Drop by the BuildBetterBricks Etsy shop to check out the complete collection.

Plush Frogger Frog on a Log

I’m a sucker for anything related to classic arcade video games. If I only had all of those quarters back (and invested them wisely,) I would be a very rich man. Regardless, I figure I’m pretty rich thanks to all of the fun times I had playing them. Anyway, this plush Frogger frog and log are pretty adorable. They’d look good among anyone’s arcade collectibles.

ArtistĀ HibouDesigns made this one of a kind plush for a video game inspired plush show at the former OhNoDoom! gallery in Chicago. She loved it so much that she wanted to keep it for herself, but now she wants someone else to enjoy it.

It measures 9″ x 5″ and Velcro allows the frog to be on or off the log as you see fit.

GlassFrogger makes Glass wearers hop in real life to brave simulated streets (update: code and video)

GlassFrogger gets Glass wearers hopping in real life

Google may keep a tight lid on Glass development, but that hasn't stopped coders at the Breaking Glass Hackathon from building some clever wearable apps. Take the event's winning entry, GlassFrogger, as an example: the HTML5-based game recreates Frogger on Google's eyepiece by making players hop in the real world to cross virtual roads. It's a multi-platform title, too, with support for any device sporting a modern web browser. GlassFrogger is free to use today, but try to avoid playing while you're out on the street -- there's enough roadkill inside the game, thank you.

Update: We've since been in touch with co-author Adam Singer, who has posted both source code and the GlassFrogger pitch; you can see his team demonstrating the game after the break.

The Ultimate Arcade Game Cake

After years of thinking about it, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a custom MAME cabinet for my basement. It’s finally coming next week, so I can’t wait to try and beat these guy’s Donkey Kong high scores. Or not. But if I wasn’t getting my own arcade machine, I’d take this arcade cake instead. It’s definitely the next best thing.

arcade cake 1

This three-tier cake was made by Wedding Cakes by Nicole, and it features colorful images of classic arcade games on each of its sides. It’s got arcade-accurate versions of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Frogger, and even Pong.

It’s even got arcade-style buttons and a coin slot. Though I bet if you tried to mash on those buttons, you’d get food coloring all over your fingertips. The only thing its missing is a couple of paddle controllers for Pong, but I’ll forgive Nicole that.

I wonder if that joystick is edible. I so want it to be a red jawbreaker.

Fifth Avenue Frogger brings everyone’s favorite roadkill to New York City (video)

Image

For all their charm, the arcade games of the 80s didn't really offer much in the way of gritty realism -- not like today's titles, certainly. Tyler DeAngelo's new take on video game hall-of-famer Frogger certainly goes a ways toward lending the gaming classic some grit. DeAngelo installed a webcam trained on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, using code to translate that footage into data that allows players to experience a real-time, real world traffic flow in a modded version of a Frogger machine. The creator has been known to drag the machine onto the famed New York street, generator in tow, letting people experience the game it was meant to be played: on a sidewalk in plain view of traffic. Check out a video of the game after the break, including a desperate plea from a talking frog who really wants a trip to the Smithsonian.
