Detailed Furniture designs that put your IKEA furniture to shame!

Classic furniture designs are called classic for a reason – the first thing you buy/gather as an adult is a table, chair, and a bed. Such is the need for these designs, they are available in a range from the cheapest to the exclusively designed pieces that go into thousands of dollars. We may start our furniture collection with IKEA, however, the designs we have showcased today are collectibles – exquisitely designed pieces of furniture that are yours to own, showcase, and hand over as they are to last across generations. Have a look and let us know your favorites!

Wood is a solid material. Such is the construction that we have used to build products, small to big, even our homes across the ages. Casey Johnson Studio has elevated the humble wood to an artistic expression that is almost fluid in shape. Meet the Billow Desk – a classic desk setup with a floating cabinet that curves in gracefully, like a billowing curtain. The hand-shaped walnut desk is one of the last commissioned pieces made by Casey, and it remains a piece to remember.

Geometry in furniture design has a very modern effect, almost timeless in its aesthetics. This TV cabinet by Loft Kolasiński has the same mesmerizing effect. A gently shaped oak veneer covers the front of this cabinet completely, taking your attention to the center of the cabinet through which your consoles will peak out. Once you have this piece, your attention will be commanded by this piece such that you may revise the interior of your home to match this piece.

The NomNom Coffee Table by Dezin Design is as cute as its name goes. The design uses contrasting wooden colors to showcase the softness of its form. The legs of the coffee table curve gently over the top of the table, almost like it is trying to eat the table! Clean, finished, minimal lines, these all components make this table a worthy addition to your living space.

Wood Effect’s tagline is ‘from project to product,’ and you can see it in the designs they create. Their latest project literally goes as a dressing table or desk – with the dimensions boasting of a desk where the spacious drawers and tabletop ensure you can utilize it with comfort for wither of the endeavors. The oak wood design showcases 4 drawers to store stationery and your dress-up requirements while stylishly sitting in your space.

Nick James identifies himself as a designer and a maker, as is showcased in this solid oak contemporary Side Cabinet! To hear the designer explain, “Add texture and character to your home with these fluted lines, creating artistic flare for everyone to see. A contemporary yet timeless piece of furniture designed for both style and function. Part of an exquisite range of fluted cabinets, all hand-made in the north of England.” Use it as a pair or alone, this cabinet is sure to be a show stealer!

This merging of two extremely traditional materials in a modern avatar is guaranteed to be a show-stealer, letting you store your bar essentials while bringing a light airy feel to any room.

Lozi Design used a supersized wave joint made from light solid ash and a variety of surface finishes to create the Wave Table. This perfect centerpiece is a part of their ‘wave series’ that highlights and adds a new dimension to any contemporary home. Lozi has also developed a new surface material for this table – by re-purposing their waste sawdust they have created a red sheeting material by mixing it with Bio Resin. Eco-friendly with a side of furniture details!

The 2 basic building materials – steel and wood come together in this table designed by Slick+DesignUSA. You know you can expect great things from the team that has been providing award-winning architecture designs for over 25 years! We have seen a lot of designs that incorporate resin – it’s a trending art that is here to stay. While most designers use resin to rework their design, designer Meubles Thouret decided to take an innovative approach that helps you appreciate the wood in its natural form even better – using resin to mold or join different pieces of wood. Each individual wooden piece retains that cut pattern, which is now encased in resin, and the added use of resin means the tricky joinery is now in the hands of this flexible material. Smart and aesthetic, isn’t it?!

Culturally, the Japanese have been known for their attention to detail while maintaining a minimal aesthetic and this same technique can be seen in Hamanshi Design’s Paraboloid Chair. Composed of a bentwood frame and a characteristic rope back, the hyperbolic form tightens up the diagonal rope back and can be optimized as per the user’s back to disperse pressure.

Furniture designed with hidden details that put your IKEA furniture to shame: Part 10

Civilization and furniture design are highly interlinked. Historians believe that about 30,000 years ago, people started constructing their own furniture from the materials available in their surroundings. From that moment on, furniture has been a statement piece. Yes, the Bauhaus movement made furniture and functionality the core of design, but the quality of your furniture remained an elemental part of depicting our social status. Fast forward to the modern era where cheap, mass-produced furniture is available in the plenty, Yanko Design showcases some beautiful furniture designs with hidden details that will make you fall in love with furniture designs all over again!

Distinguished by its elegant formal shape and enhanced by its large rounded leather-wrapped arms, the Ryokō Armchair by David Girelli gives an instant feeling of calmness. Inspired by a Japanese folding chair from the 1960s, its features, materials, and joinery details elevate the lines and design elements of the chair. The loose back cushion adjusts around the ash frame when seated and offers an innovative sense of comfort.

We love it when designers mix up materials – the result is usually a fascinating take on an everyday design. That is precisely what happened when Mark George combined his knowledge of his architectural education with his creativity – a modern concrete and wood bed frame made in Ash wood as Ash retains its original coloring. Even though concrete fills in any gap, Mark has carefully constructed his bed frame so the finesse of the design shines through.

Rattan Stool is an eco-friendly natural material that is usually used in the creation of baskets or furniture, especially chairs. It is sustainable and resilient which makes it an exceptional wood that renews in just 5-7 years. Designers love rattan for creating furniture because the manufacturing is low-tech and the production process usually involves crafting by hand or using facilities that do not negatively impact the environment. Rattan is also an easy material to mold physically and creatively to fit your idea, it accepts paints and it can be worked into many styles. Moreover, the inner core can be separated and worked into wicker – talk about reducing waste!

This truly foldable chair folds into the size of a backpack!

Folding furniture has been the norm in my home – living in a tiny home as I did. While there is a certain ease of usage and modularity that comes with having foldable furniture – going from a living room to an open floor plan in minutes, Edoardo’s design gives it a twist that’ll make it easier for you to actually carry the chair on your back without sacrificing on the material used (I’m talking about you, fabric camping chairs!)

The Lu chair gives this simple and popular idea a modern makeover, make furniture foldable and transportable easily. And this is the best foldable chair I have seen so far! The Lu chair folds without effort and can be carried around very easily. A lot of designs we see are foldable but even after folding not easy to carry around or takes too much time to fold. Made up of plastic, this makes the mechanism work perfectly. As Lu explains, “Many times we find ourselves having to put away objects, perhaps to make room, perhaps to clean the house and sometimes even to take them with us, but above all for furniture of a certain level it is always very difficult. This is where “Lu chair” was born, a dining chair suitable for different types of target, from the most elegant and sophisticated with an eye to detail but also to a younger, fashion-conscious audience. The design is innovative and elegant at the same time and the name “Lu” derives precisely from “luggage” because of its ease of being resealable and transportable wherever you want.”

Speaking of folding, it folds up like a backpack or into a small size that fits into a box! The backrest and the legs fold and join/closed with a rubber strap that also doubles as a handle. In that sense, this is a truly foldable chair.

Minimal furniture designs with clever details that perfectly replace your Muji furniture!

A beautiful piece of furniture can complete a room. It can be the final piece that makes a space come full circle, building a comfortable and cohesive haven, rather than a random area. Furniture pieces make or break a home, they add on to the essence or soul of a home, hence one needs to be extremely picky while choosing a furniture design. The design should be a reflection of you, and what you want your home to be. When you place a piece of furniture in a room, it should instantly integrate with the space, creating a wholesome and organic environment. We’ve curated a collection of furniture designs with brilliant little details that we believe will do this! Each of these pieces is unique, well-crafted, and made with a whole lot of love, and the love really shines through in the fine detailing and workmanship. We hope you feel the love too!

The footrest is a little pyramid of brass that sits comfortably beneath the round seat, tucked plushly between the wooden legs. If you are someone who loves to have a clean, organized, clutter-free desk then the Shelter desk by  João Teixeira is the one for you! It was designed keeping in mind all the devices, wires, and accessories that live on our workstations, however, Shelter still remains minimal while maximizing the value of a desk. There are three slim drawers on the front side that are big enough to store your gadgets, like tablets or laptops. The back drawer was designed for you to hide all your cables and chargers. But the beauty of this desk lies in the curved drawers that give this desk its fluidity while retaining the functionality of the design.

Designed by SÓHA for Savannah Bay Gallery, this sculpted bench was created wholly from copper and wood. The two materials combine and contrast with one another simultaneously, to create a piece of seating that seems more like a work of art. The rugged copper texture of the bench makes for an interesting visual, though it may not be very comfy to sit upon!

Furniture designed with hidden details that put your IKEA furniture to shame: part 8

Each piece of furniture tells a story. Furniture design, or rather discovering + collecting unique furniture designs has become a dedicated hobby of mine! Coming from a small home, where floor space was always at a premium, the furniture I have been subjected to has always been foldable and multifunctional (which maybe explains my obsession for modular designs!) but I will not forget the feeling of sitting in a well-designed armchair and its ottoman for the first time after a long working day. That’s what these designs to me, it’s a story that began when their designer/manufacturer spent hours chiseling the design, on paper which the craftsman converted into a physical object that will last generations and tell their tales. My romantic ramblings aside, these furniture designs are sure to help you connect with them using detailed designs that remain classic across years!

The Wojtala Nightstand by Kirby Furniture showcases wood staining in 2 different colors to let their shapes do the talking. Using a fun circular handle, the nightstand is a must-have to continue your night-themed adventures with its moon-shaped insignia. Fun yet functional sounds perfect to us!

We have seen a lot of designs that incorporate resin – it’s a trending art that is here to stay. Furniture designed with hidden details that put your IKEA furniture to shame: part 7

I often wonder when was the moment man decided that natural forms can be shaped or reformed to match our sitting needs – can you imagine the genius of the man who first made a chair? No more rolling off the curved surface of a rock, this particular rock is shaped to place your backside on it with comfort, or at least relative comfort compared to what was in store in those days. As someone who has spent plenty of time (not exactly proud of it) playing those home-designing games, let me tell you, my love affair with furniture design has been one of the longest relationships of my life. Working at YD has only amplified this attraction and it is product designs like these that certify my belief that furniture, designed with love and attention to detail, is a form of art. Scroll through our curated collection and I am sure, you will also become a connoisseur of fine furniture, and will willingly stay away from IKEA the next time you need something well-designed.

Nic Wallenberg, while studying at the RCA designed the Squeeze Chair. Cute name and an even cuter design! The chair contains just five bolts – how you ask? Nic used an asymmetric joint that allows straight timber to bend. Wallenberg made the chair from American hickory as part of AHEC’s Out of the Woods project. The designer explains, “Under a load of a seated person, these joints will bend, becoming concave on the side of the thinner person. In this way, the seat and back can flex into an ergonomic shape that is comfortable for sitting, allowing straight pieces of timber could be used that would create curves in operation.”

Aero bar cart by Plataform4 for Lider Interiors shows us a more elegant version of the classic straw woven ventilated cabinet door contrasted by a simple leather pull. This merging of two extremely traditional materials in a modern avatar is guaranteed to be a show-stealer, letting you store your bar essentials while bringing a light airy feel to any room.

Marcel Sigel‘s design is the perfect example to explain my love of detailed designs. Marcel takes a chair, but it is his attention to detail – from the carving of the chair’s backrest to its light yet sturdy frame that makes the Still Life chair an apt addition to any room. Marcel says, “The archetypal leg and frame construction are refined for strength and lightness; whilst the backrest, with logic that may seem less obvious, developed purely out of ergonomic rationale. This defining feature flows outwards from the sides before turning tightly back on itself, pushing material properties to the extreme. As a result, the backrest sits forward off the legs, creating space for greater lumbar movement and comfort.”

Meet the Pickapart Table by Josh Carmody! The name may be cute, but the table holds its value with the structural details that show off its almost piece-by-piece construction in its joinery. The design is not only versatile – its a modular, flatpack, and future-proof in its construction. Available in a variety of sizes, it’s the joinery that holds the buyer’s attention, as the designer explains, “The structural concept for both the frame and tabletop is designed around contemporary and glueless iterations of fine woodworking joints – all pinned together with a purpose-designed compression joint – machined in brass.”

For this fluffy yet modern design, we’ll let the makers, Fomu Design do the talking, “The L’Art de Vivre (The Art of Living) Lounge chair draws influence from mid-century French design with a focus on finding the balance between art and function while using design principals and modern production methods to achieve seamless form and details. The chair consists of two main upholstered components paired with a thoughtfully contrasting solid oak timber panel frame. The timber parts of the chair provide a clean simple support system which allows the large, almost oversized upholstered components to seamlessly become the dominant feature in this design.” The texture of this beautiful chair is inviting in its natural state, making the user almost helpless in wanting to touch, feel, and interact with the chair, physically.

The Polly cabinet is a versatile storage and shelving solution. Made in solid timber, the Polly cabinet celebrates simplicity combined with subtle flowing lines and as always with TIDE Design, it is the beautiful positioning of the slanted wooden legs that caught our attention!

The cross lap joint detail of this dining table design (which is still WIP) has us completely wow-ed! The first idea might be that this is a steam-bent design. But designer Hugh McCarthy reveals that the curved joint is actually a piece cut from a solid piece of oak. I don’t know what the tabletop design will be like, but the base has us excited enough to want more!

Furniture designed with hidden details that put your IKEA furniture to shame: part 5

My birthday comes up this week and my husband has decided to create a reading nook for me as a present. Being a notorious book worm, I can only wait, rather impatiently, for his plans to get completed since for sure I can’t wait to curl up in that corner! While he browses our usual haunts like IKEA to assemble this corner, I am, in a not-so-subtle attempt, going to share this collection of beautifully designed furniture designs in the hopes he picks one of these designs. Because just look at this collection! Every piece of furniture designed here shows the love of labor put into it by the designer, holding little design details you will identify and are sure to make you smile every time someone appreciates your stellar choice of furniture!

Designer Nicolaj Bo created a distinctly Danish look using a dusty blue linoleum and oak for this kitchen design. Given the oddly shaped house, the focal point of the villa is this large kitchen-dining room with sloped ceilings. The residents of the house have a penchant for finely designed carpentry, which caused the designer to pay extra attention to the details, like this drawer design. “I knew it was going to be a kitchen design, which I am also happy about in 10 years, but which, conversely, could also have been designed 10 years ago. That is the essence of Danish design for me – that it is timeless.”

Designed by OS & OOS Studio and Klaas Kuiken with materials supplied by StoneCycling, this Terrazzo Bench is a sustainable solution for the increasing amount of glass waste produced in Zanzibar. “Zanzibar is an island with about 1 million inhabitants. In recent times, tourism has grown markedly and so too the volume of refuse. bottle-up seeks a solution to this issue. Most furniture for hotels in Zanzibar is currently imported from foreign countries and is often made of wood, which means it can be badly affected by the weather conditions on the island. Furniture made from Trending Terrazzo is much more sustainable, beautiful to look at, and generates awareness for bottle-up.”

Visro Gallery’s Sako Console is a story in timeless design and elegance. The solid waveform like paneling adds an instant focal point in the design, giving a break from the gorgeous wooden texture that flanks the sides of this console table. The timelessness of the Sako console makes it an easy fit in every apartment.

If custom furniture is the key to your heart, Conti Wood Studio holds the key you need! This walnut-topped table comes with an ash or maple legs – actually designed to be speaker stands, the tables double as side tables or even pot stands.

Roberto Paoli’s Pippi Chair for Midj in Italy stands out from the crowd with its bright orange color. With the frame of the chair upholstered by fabric to add an interesting dimension, the collection also includes chairs, armchairs, and lounge chairs with armrests and two stools.

The Polly cabinet is a versatile storage and shelving solution. Made in solid timber, the Polly cabinet celebrates simplicity combined with subtle flowing lines and as always with TIDE Design, it is the beautiful positioning of the slanted wooden legs that caught our attention!

Lozi Design used a supersized wave joint made from light solid ash and a variety of surface finishes to create the Wave Table. This perfect centerpiece is a part of their ‘wave series’ that highlights and adds a new dimension to any contemporary home. Lozi has also developed a new surface material for this table – by repurposing their waste sawdust they have created a red sheeting material by mixing it with Bio Resin. Eco-friendly with a side of furniture details!

Elk Kitchen’s team loves a challenge! For where else would you find an entire kitchen focused on triangle-shaped drawers? As the design team explains, “O’45 was born of a desire to create an innovative design approach that leads to a new aesthetic. The result is a design that balances modern engineering & traditional craftsmanship. Super-efficient, function-focused utility centers deliver a genuine alternative to the kitchen status-quo.”

The more classic a material, the higher its appeal for me. The best example of this is the Square Armchair by the family-owned business Decarvalho Atelier. The use of straw is a simple yet minimal addition, with the geometric-ness of the design giving a soothing aspect to the overall chair. If the straw is an unconventional material, it is balanced by the use of leather that gives warmth to the design – you know this chair will be with you for long and the leather will surely adapt to your body as you both age gracefully.

Furniture designed with hidden details that put your IKEA furniture to shame: Part 4

Oh furniture, how I love you so. If there is one thing my Pinterest is full of, it is these gorgeous furniture pieces that I ogle over at regular intervals! While we all start off with IKEA for its simplicity, affordability and customization, these product designs with their attention to detail are designed to elevate your home to a whole new level! Each of these designs initially comes across as elegant pieces, it is upon closer inspection you see the detail and love of labor put into it that almost makes it a secret you share with your furniture and anyone else who has the same attention to detail as you do!

Hiroto Arima’s TV cabinet brings out the old, preserving it for the modern day. The elegant finishing of the cabin elevates the entire design, making it suitable for any space. In fact, I would make this the centerpiece of my home and arrange the remaining to match it!

Tim Denton brings together his love of furniture and high quality craftsmanship with the Display A – a collection of flexible furniture. Modular, perfect for everything from a small pop-up store, a cafe to even a DIY space, the Display A is the best way to display your love of labor and your skill while its design inspires you to attain the same level of details in your work!

The Komoda RTV, an oak dresser by Marcin Wyszecki is a modern classic product design, made with an attention to detail that defines its great quality. Sliding openwork fronts predispose the cabinet as an audio-RTV piece of furniture, allowing control pilot contact and excellent ventilation of electronic equipment.

With an appearance that almost mimics the fragmented beauty of terrazzo, the PVC Bench by UAE-based designer Ammar Kalo relies on a new type of composite material developed by recycling old PVC drainpipes. The transparent resin reveals the multiple PVC shards in a way that seems to contrast the bench’s overall smooth, soft, organic design.

The Alato Cabinet by Pakawat Vijaykadga and Jumphol Socharoentham – students studying furniture design in Thailand uses a wave-like pattern to create a gradient of cool colors across its front panel. The designers chose the feathers to be the inspiration for the design, using the interlocking pattern to replicate the gradient of a bird’s feathers.

Atelier Moschata’s Paimio Chair uses wooden joinery to set up this beautiful chair, bound in nylon and cotton to create the backrest. The balance of the ash wood and the pale white fabric gives the overall design an airy-ness, making it great for using outdoors as well as indoors!

Roberto Paoli’s Pippi Chair for Midj in Italy stands out from the crowd with its bright orange color. With the frame of the chair upholstered by fabric to add an interesting dimension, the collection also includes chairs, armchairs, and lounge chairs with armrests and two stools.
