Adorable Tape Measure designed to look like a chameleon with an extending tongue is a great example of nature-inspired design

Animated movies have been my escapism since childhood – and Johnny Depp’s masterpiece Rango is the reason I am referring to this chameleon-inspired measuring tape as adorable right now! The chameleon’s camouflaging capability is in focus here too, as this EDC hides the measuring tape in plain sight.

Look at those details!  The huge, bulby eyes, detailed scale texture, the ridges in the back, and the proportion of the overall design makes this a perfect fit for stationery enthusiasts the world over. Adding to the quirkiness of the design, the tongue of the chameleon is a measuring tape that extends up to 2 meters in length. The body of the chameleon measures a tiny 1.9 inches, making it perfect to hang onto your keychain for daily use. The body is made from brass and manganese steel, giving it a nice weight and a solid overall feel to the design.

Speaking of the inspiration, the designer says, “The chameleon is one of the most charming creatures in the animal kingdom. It has survived for hundreds of millions of years under the law of the jungle with two unique techniques, which are color changing and tongue swiping. The chameleon is one of the most controversial characters in human society. The chameleon’s tongue punch is a powerful punch that pushes the limits of known vertebrate muscle capacity. In ancient Greek civilization, it was known as the “Khamaileon” lion of the earth.” Fun facts to impress anyone who questions your choice of stationery!

With nature-inspired design fast becoming a trend, the brass chameleon measuring tape is a collectible you want to get your hands on. And you know, this little lizard will not blend into your surrounding clutter. It is an EDC designed to stand out!

From Apple to Android, these framed disassembled smartphones make for a worthy designer gift!

When you buy a new phone, all that’s worth appreciating is the design engineering of this little gadget that rules our lives. Disassembling your phone and then preserving it in a picture frame is not an everyday affair, but some creatives have made a skillful enterprise from this. Not a long while ago, we saw Indie art studio GRID amaze us with the iPhone 5 Framed Edition. And now we have a featured artist with a massive collection of teardown smartphones and tablets well preserved in photo frames for generations to appreciate – because why should iPhone users have all the fun!

Computer engineer Kevin, inspired by Todd McLellan’s Things Come Apart series, went on to dissemble popular phone models right from the nostalgic Android Blackberry and Nokia models to the much modern ones like the Apple iPhone 8 and Honor 6 Plus. It all started with his first iPhone that was taken apart and then framed in his living room. Then he couldn’t stop himself from dismantling his old gadgets, including iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and Sony rx100m2. On posting the setup on social media, the pictures attracted fans who also wanted their gadgets to be framed for cherished memories on their living room wall or bedroom desk. This fueled his passion, and Kevin ultimately opened his own Etsy shop that goes by the name FEIPPO. The idea is to keep your keepsakes safe – maybe it was the first gadget you bought with your own salary, a gift from your spouse, or just because you love watching the individuals that make up these complicated gadgets. This is a great way to memorialize your device instead of having it collect dust in the corner of your desk.

The taken apart mobile devices are meticulously preserved in glass frames with the optional frame choice in chestnut, tan, black or white. These decorative art pieces for any desk setup are absolutely hypnotic, especially how all of the disassembled parts are explained in detail with accompanying text descriptions. Since Kevin’s collection is enormous, we have handpicked our favorite Android and Apple devices for you to enjoy. If you are also thinking of framing your old gadgets in this manner, you deserve a hi-five from me!

This ‘lipstick card’ makes it so much it easier to carry and apply make-up

I’m by no means an expert on lipstick… I can’t tell the difference between a Maroon and a Burgundy, but I know enough to be able to say that the Yanzhi Lipstick Card is an incredibly clever idea. Packaged in a neat, card-sized device, the Yanzhi Lipstick’s easy to spot, store, carry, and apply. It’s one of those sensible ideas that make you wonder lipsticks are shaped the way they are, and why they haven’t changed in literally centuries.

The Yanzhi Lipstick’s card-shaped design makes it easy to carry in your pocket, purse, or even wallet (it’s 2021 and anyone can wear lipstick). The card detail is great for branding purposes, and allows you to easily see the color on a much larger swatch than on the top of a cylindrical lipstick container. The most important part about Yanzhi’s experience is in how you apply it. Designed to be used sort of the way you’d use a tissue or blotting paper to absorb excess lip-gloss, all you do is eject the lipstick from the card and place it between both lips and move them around almost as if you were picking meat off a pair of BBQ ribs. Once you’re done, slide the lipstick back into its card-cover, and voila! You don’t need a mirror, and thanks to the protective wall on the edge of the lipstick card, you won’t have a red line running across your teeth either!

The Yanzhi Lipstick is a winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2021.

The AW3 from elago pays tribute to Apple’s original hero product from its heyday. The 1984 Macintosh-inspired silicone sleeve for the Airpods case really gives it less of a dental-floss vibe and more of a cute relic appeal. The white silicone sleeve guards your Airpods case, cushioning it from accidental bumps and scratches, while an outlet at its base allows you to charge it too. In fact, the entire sleeve is compatible with wireless chargers too, letting you use even the new generation Airpods 2 with it. AW3’s design comes with the iconic Hello engraved into its form, which also lets you see the green charging light when the case is plugged in.

In two lines, this is a Vegan Watch strap for your super cool Apple Watch. In elaborate terms, we are discussing how there are more uses for Piñatex – a natural leather alternative that is made from pineapple leaves. Many of you may be aware that all the parts of a  coconut tree are used in some form or the other. For example, the leaves are woven into baskets, the husk of the coconut is used in the coir industry, whereas the fruit is consumed in totality – water, milk, pulp, and oil! Another such fruit is the pineapple. Piñatex is a natural leather alternative made from cellulose fibers extracted from pineapple leaves. Crafting an Apple Watch Strap – perhaps the World’s First pineapple strap! The material is very ethical and sustainable and makes for a great workaround for leather straps.

Designed as a pretty nifty throwback to Apple’s golden era of the iPod, Elago’s W6 stand is a perfect tribute to one of Apple’s most ground-breaking products ever! The W6 is a part of Elago’s rather remarkable throwback series of stands for the watch, ranging from stands that resemble the Macintosh Computer to the gloriously colorful iMac G3, to even the Nintendo GameBoy. The W6 takes on a more recent ancestor of the Watch, the iPod Classic, which made its debut in 2001, nearly twenty years ago! A modern reinterpretation of the old plastic-and-metal device, the W6 stand is tiny and comes made from silicon, allowing it to flex as you slide your Watch in, and preventing it from accidental bumps or scratches with its shock-absorbing exterior.

At the time of their release, the Airpods were criticized for being too ‘easy to lose’. This spawned a wide variety of products like the Elago Airpods strap that helped you secure your expensive earpieces in place, eliminating the danger of losing them. The Wristfit is another such ‘sensible’ product that simply gives you the ability to dock your Airpods on your Apple Watch. Keeping them in a place that’s easy to access, the Wristfit secures the Watch around your wrist, and the Airpods right on the strap like a sort of holster for your earphones. Push them right in when you’re not using them and you won’t have to worry about them at all. It also means you don’t have to carry around their dental-floss-box-shaped carrying case either!

With Apple launching its latest 16 inches MacBook Pro, it was fairly obvious that accessories for it would follow ensuite. One such intriguing product is the DGRule. The designers of DGRule describe it as an “invisible hub” and I guess we can see why. The DGRule promises to be a convenient alternative to the limited Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports since they aren’t always compatible with all devices. Subtle, discreet, and far from bulky, DGRule snaps onto both sides of the MacBook Pro. The cushion pad ensures it stays glued onto the laptop, no matter which position you work in.

Dyson’s new hair-straightener shows the company’s innovative approach to problem-solving

A bladeless fan. Why would you need one? Have you ever thought about how a fan chops up the wind as its blades cut through the air? Or how fan blades generate static, attracting dust and making them dirty in a matter of just weeks? Chances are these small experience gaps elude most people, designers even. Dyson’s Bladeless Fan’s design was aimed at providing a constant source of ‘un-buffeted’ air. Throw in its ‘air multiplier’ and you’ve got a fan that’s incredibly powerful relative to its size, and easy to clean. When working on a new product, Dyson’s design team often looks for these experiential gaps and plugs them. Take for instance their recently launched AirWrap hair curler, which perfectly curls locks using a ‘tornado of air’ rather than a heated rod. Dyson’s products speak of a user-experience like no other because their design team approaches problems like no other, looking for more effective lateral solutions rather than simply designing a better version of existing technology.

A single hair is often considered a metaphor for thin-ness. Saying someone won the 100-meter dash by a hair’s breadth would imply that the competition was incredibly close. However, when combined, a lock of hair actually has volume. The multiple strands of hair actually band together to create thickness, so why are hair-straighteners almost always designed to ‘flatten’ your hair against two heated plates?

The Dyson Coralle hair-straightener, which launches today, features flexing plates that bend according to your hair’s volume. The flexing plates curve around the locks of hair, heating them evenly from all sides, while making sure to straighten them without flattening or damaging them. The curved copper plates, an industry first, come with tolerances as low as 65-nanometers (thinner than an individual human hair), and flex around your locks of hair to straighten them without reducing their volume. On the inside, the Coralle comes with a maximum heat setting that’s 40 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than most straighteners. Dyson’s engineers say that with the curved plates that distribute heat evenly, the straightener actually works just as efficiently as regular straighteners, with lesser heat. Moreover, the Coralle’s internal chip performs temperature checks 100 times per second to make sure it performs optimally with no temperature or performance deviations. The Coralle is designed to be wireless too, allowing you to use the straightener in front of a mirror without worrying about whether there’s a power source nearby, and comes with a maximum run time of 30 minutes, long enough to straighten your hair perfectly, and short enough to make sure it doesn’t cause any problems if accidentally left on! Now THAT’s called effective problem solving achieved through lateral thinking!

Female friendly products designed to empower you this international women’s day!

Intro

The Little Apricot Dresser by Tsing Hang is one dresser that lets you be in touch with your feminine side while maintaining a beautifully muted, wooden aesthetic that does not compromise on your need for a well-designed product. The felt wall holds your smaller products in place and seems to be easily removable, so you can go back to your minimal setup once you are done dressing up!

The Heer breastfeeding bench aims to conquer two existing status quo’s – First is to allow women to breastfeed in public without having to lock themselves in a tiny room to “finish their business”. Second is to still give them the comfort and privacy they deserve, keeping them safe from onlookers while being in a public setting. The cocoon-like structure of the chair envelops the mother and child with an open side that allows the mother to confer and stay in touch with their trusted companion while breastfeeding. Designed by 52 Hours, the Heer bench is normalizing women’s needs in an everyday setting.

The Present is a simple tweak to an existing product – the home pregnancy test kit, to help remove the fear and anxiety associated with positive pregnancy news at the first go. Aimed at couples trying to get pregnant, this kit gives a gentle reminder as to how the positive pregnancy test is the present the couple wants in their life. Designed collaboratively by Byeongjae Ha, Chi-eun Jang, Kiho Kim, and Jae Heum Lee, the strip is also equipped with a slot to showcase sonography pics for people who like to display this beautiful life-altering moment of their life.

Laila Laurel, a graduate from Brighton University has designed a unique set of chairs that helps to tackle manspreading! Using humor to address everyday issues, these chairs are designed for the female counterpart to spread-out and sit with east while another chair restricts the man’s legs, helping them sit straight and narrow while playing with gender stereotypes to create a neutral and comfortable environment!

Meet the Origamei outfit by Angela Wang, a project that has two purposes. One, to make fashion much more accessible, using the art of folding as a method to reduce a clothing item’s spatial footprint… and two, Origamei sees itself as more of an empowerment tool, as most clothes do, helping women dress in clothes that feel comfortable and make them feel confident. The fact that you can carry these clothes around in the palm of your hand, or even stash them in your clutch or the glove compartment of your car, means that the very confidence and self-esteem that you get from wearing good clothes, is made portable too.

Designer Anna Meddaugh has created a personal urinal, especially for women in refugee camps that can be used in shelters at night to avoid the threat of sexual violence outside. Meet the Night Loo, a portable and reusable toilet box with polymer beads that soak up liquid and odors, allowing women to pee in the relative safety of their space and empty out the contents during the daytime. The designer Anna actually received a US James Dyson Award for her prototype. Though designed keeping refugees in mind, this design can easily be repurposed to serve various other scenarios where women feel at risk while urinating.

The ALL DAY BAG by Johnathan Webster brings a new level of problem-solving and pragmatism to a product that’s clearly plagued with problems. By redesigning the core UX of the woman’s handbag, The ALL DAY BAG gives women the ability to do more and carry more, with the freedom of being able to wear their handbag the way they see fit. The ALL DAY BAG is essentially a well-designed backpack in the avatar of a woman’s handbag. It comes with a full-grain premium leather exterior in a silhouette that puts it at par with most high-end handbags, albeit with an adjustable strap system that lets you carry it like a handbag, wear it like a tote, or even strap it across your shoulders like a backpack (effectively freeing up your hands).

The Connect Life Jacket makes you critically question an age-old existing design makes it a success. The Connect integrates mother and child into one single jacket (also adhering with the practice of evacuating “women and children first”), allowing the parent and child to stay safe and more importantly together in the event of a maritime crisis. Designers Jialin Song, Kun Xu, Yumo Jiang & Chaojun Zhang have created the design in a way that the child’s positioning is conveniently close to the mother’s heart.

The Lapee is a shocking pink plastic structure that has three urinals arranged in a spiral, with curving backrests that provide privacy while allowing the user to remain aware of their surroundings. Designed by Gina Périer and Alexander Egebjerg, this product was aimed to help the standard female toilet for festivals and outdoor events that allows people to pee sitting down quickly and safely. The design is made to be used without a door, with its spiral design protecting the user from the front and back, giving them privacy without any additional risk of traveling to reach an enclosed private space only to urinate. Aimed at being the women’s alternative to men’s urinal, Lapee can truly change the landscape of public events!

Shahar Goren, a designer from Holon Institue of Technology in Israel has come up with the idea to design custom-made sandals that are not only fashionable but stylish too. Goren believes that as the structure of our feet are unique to us as individuals, it really isn’t a “one size fits all in that size” world. Goren’s idea sees making customized orthotics a solution to this problem. By taking a 3D scan of the foot at the shoe store the customer then chooses the shoe they would like. This scan is then digitally processed at the warehouse, to a CAD file of custom made orthotics. The factory then produces the orthotics, which are then created by a C.N.C. machine automatically. Then within a few days, the shop receives the orthotics for easy placement into the new sandals!

Designed to look un-designed and well-designed

sejour_1

The lack of design details doesn’t make a product less attractive, or badly designed. In fact, if consciously done, minimalism and sensibility can together create an aesthetic that is calm, comforting, pleasing, and more importantly, highly noticeable.

Standing out against an ocean of over-designed appliances is Séjour, a series of self-care appliances for frequent travelers. Séjour focuses on the need of the hour, i.e., being convenient and easy to pack/use. Coming as a kit comprising a hair-dryer, straightener, and trimmer, the three appliances fit perfectly inside a slim tray that can be easily placed in suitcases along with your clothes. They even use a single universal cable that can connect to the appliance that’s needed.

Visually, Séjour aims at looking like a reliable, no-nonsense set of appliances. The lack of “visual fluff” feels almost therapeutic, and its beautiful earthy colors give it a realistic demeanor. The appliances come made from FluidSolids® injected biopolymers, and are easy to assemble/disassemble, making them great not just for you but for the planet too!

A ‘Clutch’ Performance!

bern_clutch_1

What most people do in print, Odo Fioravanti achieved in a brilliant form exercise. The bag’s incredibly wavy, organic form isn’t a graphic, but rather a series of grooves meticulously modeled and then 3D printed in plastic. Conventional production techniques wouldn’t work given the number of undercuts on the ridges of the bag, so Odo relied on 3D printing Nylon and then giving it a hand-dyed paint job in stunning shades of metallic. These shades work brilliantly well, forming complex high-contrast light and shadow patterns that make them instantly eye-grabbing and immediately give you the urge to run your hand across it’s ridged surface.

Thumb drives that save lives

Now here’s some tech I will happily rally behind. Elegant and life-saving (or even property-saving), this is the Sound Grenade+. Created by B A S U (previously known as Robocopp… I’m guessing there were complications involved there), this pen-drive sized gadget is a full blown emergency siren. It comes with two parts. A pin on top, and the base, which emits the sounds at 130 decibels (equivalent to an ambulance siren) when the pin on top is removed. The Sound Grenade+ acts as a criminal deterrent by blasting loud sound waves. You can use it as a tripwire, tying the pin and base via thread, or happily hang it on your backpack, for safety reasons. When you feel threatened, pop the pin out (this would happen if someone triggered the tripwire too) and the sound grenade lets out a shrill siren (which works under water too), effectively alarming the culprit. Chances are, they’ll turn tail and run away.

The Sound Grenade+ runs on CR1632 batteries (the tablet shaped ones) and when tripped, will ring continuously for 30 minutes, unless the pin is replaced on the base. Rugged and waterproof, the Sound Grenade+ is heavily recommended for travelers, students, and women, effectively replacing items like the rape whistle. It can even provide an instant alarm for people outdoors against predators or attackers. B A S U is also working on a Sound Grenade that fits a sim-card and can auto-call 911 when triggered, which will debut at the end of this year.
