The Longest Bicycle in the World

Check out this ridiculously long bicycle. It was built by Mijil Van Mares Werkploeg, a cycling organization in the Netherlands. They built it specifically to get into the Guinness Book of World Records, and not because they like never being able to park their bike. Guess what? It is now officially the world’s longest bicycle, measuring in at a length of 117 feet and 5 inches long.

The team used the same kind of aluminum trusses that are used in concert lighting rigs. Riding this behemoth is no one man operation. A bike this long needs a co-pilot. That would be the guy who pedals from the rear. The guy in front steers. Turning around on this thing is a nightmare. You just can’t.

Team leader Frank Pelt says it rides just fine. That is until they come to a bend in the road.

Budapest Builds World’s Tallest LEGO Tower

This 114-foot-tall LEGO tower was recently erected in Budapest, Hungary using over 450,000 bricks. Guinness Book officials have verified that this is the tallest tower ever that is made entirely out of LEGO bricks. It beat the previous record holder only by a foot, but that one was built by schoolchildren.

The mayor said that he hopes that this tower will help promote Budapest to the world. Then he stepped on some LEGO bricks and cursed like a sailor, storming off in a huff. Just kidding about that part.

They do hope it will bring more tourists to Budapest – even though they are tearing the tower down. Now, who will beat this record next? C’mon kids! Take back your record and build a 200-foot-tall tower!

Scientist Sounds off with World’s Longest Echo

If you’ve ever found yourself in a room where you discover that the acoustic properties create a great echo, you’ve probably tried to see how long you can make the echo last. I’ve certainly found myself clapping my hands or yelling “Helooooooo” when I find a space like that. But I’ve never heard an echo that lasted more than a couple of seconds. Recently, a scientist managed to capture an echo which was an astounding 112 seconds long.

After finding out about a maze of abandoned WWII oil tanks under Scotland, Professor Trevor Cox decided to see just how long an echo could last in one of these massive 25.5 million liter tanks. Incredibly, after firing a gun in the chamber, he realized just how much reverberation was in the space, and captured this astounding sound clip. Keep in mind you’ll need to wear headphones and crank up the volume to hear much beyond about the 40 second mark.

The sound was captured by firing a pistol inside the solid rock chamber, and it seems to go on forever. The broadband spectrum sound lasts for 75 seconds, while the lowest frequencies lasted all the way out to 112 seconds.

But it wasn’t exactly easy for Professor Cox to make it happen. He first had to squeeze through a narrow 18-inch diameter oil pipe to get inside of the tank – not something that I’d be likely to try.

Guinness World Records has certified the 75 second record, which blew away the prior one – which stood at just 15 seconds.

World Record Tallest Domino Tower Toppled

When I was a kid I used to love creating domino courses and watching them all fall in fun ways. I would never have the patience to do it today. Especially not anything as elaborate as what these people set up. This 20-foot-tall tower sat at the end of an array of over 100,000 dominoes.

The structure was designed and built by the group Austrian Domino Art with some help from HLUW Yspertal students. It took five months of preparation and four days of setup – and it is all over in a few short minutes. They now hold the record for tallest domino structure.

Their domino tower itself consisted of 11,465 dominoes! It is super fun to watch the lead-up to the big fall, as they incorporated some really cool elements throughout their domino construction. Check it out:

You Could Live Inside the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Cuckoo clocks are pretty amazing. I’m always fascinated by the engineering inside of them. They keep pretty good time too. Plus, all authentic cuckoo clocks are made by hand, so each one is unique. It is a fine tradition of craftsmen that are super talented. And now we have the world’s largest cuckoo clock, which is as big as a house.

According to Guinness World Records, this is the biggest cuckoo clock in the world and it is in Triberg, Germany. Of course. It’s a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock design scaled up 60 times the size of the original. This clock weighs six tons.

The cuckoo bird itself is 4.5 meters long and weighs 150 kilograms. Like the real thing, this clock is made of wood and was carved entirely hand. The cuckoo calls once every quarter hour and then chimes every hour.

Unless you really like Cuckoo clocks, the sound would probably drive you nuts if you heard it all day.
