The Hammocraft: Because Why Not?

“Screw-it, let’s do it” has got the be the most American, and awesome, attitude in approaching new product design. It’s definitely what the makers of the Hammocraft told themselves on a beer-fuelled brainstorming session, but what they made is both amazing and ridiculous at the same time. Mostly ridiculous, yes, but amazing for being so. It’s a watercraft first and foremost. And it’s also four hammocks. So that’s it. It’s so that you can go fishing while laying on a hammock. We think.

It’s not even really a water craft, actually. It’s more like a $1,000 kit so that you can make your own craft using two paddle boards, which are not included. Also not included: the hammocks. So yeah, you’re being asked to spend one large on a metal frame that might end up turning into what you see in the pictures. Also required, you and three friends. Not two because balance. And make sure one of them is not super fat, because also balance. It… I mean, it’s a cool idea, sort of. Or maybe not even… Geez, we get it: it’d be awesome to just drink beer all day, while lazily throwing a line down and laying in a hammock. We’re just not sure the Hammocraft is going to get you there.

Ok, we’re just being mean. Maybe you do have friends and we’re projecting. Whatever your social situation is, The Bunyanesque Hammock might actually appeal to you. It’s basically a giant tarp that you have to stretch out between trees or post or other structures.

It’s rated to support up to 1,000 lbs, which is five 200 lbs. adults or about 72 kids. We think. Anyway, it’s a lot of people frolicking about in what looks like a ton of fun on a summer afternoon. It’s also a lot of money: $500.

You can spend all kinds of money buying kitty a fancy new bed for him to sleep in, but you know that in the end he’ll fall in love with a random piece of cardboard and call that home. Such are cats. But if you buy him a CatCrib and he ignores it, at least you won’t have it lying around, taking up all kinds of space, like that $100 faux-fur bed you bought just last summer that hasn’t even been used once. The CatCrib is kind of like a hammock that attaches to anything with four legs, efficiently using space that would be wasted otherwise. It looks comfy enough for a feline to appreciate, and at $29 in three different colours, won’t break the bank if he just ignores it.
