The smart syringe

Medical waste is possibly the most difficult waste to treat. It can’t be recycled, and it can’t even be carelessly disposed. Tonnes of plastic ends up in landfills because of used disposable-syringes. The Single-Use-Band-aid is a brilliant solution to this problem, greatly reducing the use of plastic. Designed as a flexible vial with the syringe needle attached, it comes with a paper apparatus that can be used to inject the contents of the vial into your blood-flow. Its unbelievably intuitive and minimal design seems ideal for medical practitioners in rural areas where the need of the day is to provide cheap and hassle free medical treatment.

The Disappearing Shower

rups_00

Designed for micro-living, the My Rups Folding Shower is the first of its kind. Like a giant cocoon crafted in impermeable fabric, users can retract or open the unit to shower and fold to store when not in use. Its supported by aluminum structure frames that hold shape in its expanded form and nest to a compact size when not in use. After a shower, simply fold it up and push flush against the wall for more space in a small bathroom!

The Medical Multi-tool

dtool_surgery_instrument_1

In medicine, design gives a massive amount of consideration to function. After all, someone’s life is at stake. Designing a tool that can do two things at once can sometimes buy doctors a few extra seconds and that can be enough to save a life. The DTool is a revolutionary surgical instrument that enables laparoscopic surgeons to perform surgeries with ease.

Laparoscopy (or minimally invasive surgery) is a type of surgery that poses a lesser risk to the health of the patient. However, it’s a great strain for the surgeon since they need to perform everything within a tiny incision in the body. This requires nerves of steel, and a very specific set of tools. However, changing instruments mid-surgery can be complicated. So, the DTool combines instruments together to create a Swiss Knife of M.I. Surgery. Designed to grip and to cut, these tools are operated by triggers at the gripping end of the shaft. The other end contains the gripping pincers and a cutting tool. Any doctors here? I’m sure we’d love to listen to your thoughts!

Tech to Bring You Closer

braun_01

This candidate for the Braun Contest, called “Distance Less,” uses technology to bring families closer. It’s aimed at elderly users and focuses on a simplistic, easy-to-use interface. Children and grandchildren can record videos on their computer or iPhone and send the media directly to the D-Less device. The recorded video is then projected in an easy-to-see large scale picture on the wall or other surface. It’s particularly useful for users who suffer from diseases associated with memory loss, such as Alzheimers, in remembering family members.
