iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus: Five Things You Might Have Missed

With the announcement and soon to be worldwide launch of the latest iPhone from Apple, here’s the five important items you might have missed.

From Cupertino, California, the HQ for the consumer electronics megalith founded by the famed two “Steves” (Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak), Apple unveiled their next iPhone this morning in front of a crowd of tech-thristy media. Not just one iPhone though, but two.

Launching worldwide on September 19, is the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. We’ve already done a proper detailing of the newest iPhone models, but with all the info that’s come all this week, you might have missed some tiny, albeit important bits. Thankfully, we’ve managed to group all that has slipped through the fray and placed them all here in this five-point list:

1. Subtle Design Choices For The iPhone 6 & 6 Plus

The iPhone 6’s rounded, edge-less new build certainly makes it stand out against its past, square-ish revisions, but there are other interesting tiny design choices to take note of, mainly with the first thing most users interact with when using their iPhone, the power button.

Oh, but wait! Button, button, where’s the power button? Not on top of the iPhone like in models past; the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus now have their power buttons located on right-hand side of the mobile device. The move was most likely done to accommodate a more ergonomic grip, especially for the larger Plus, which is a behemoth on the hands already.

2. iPhone 6 Plus – More Than Meets The Size

Yes, the iPhone 6 Plus is bigger; 5.5 inches diagonally of prime 1080p HD viewing real-estate, to be precise. But if you’re picking up the XL version of the iPhone 6 in the next couple of weeks, you’re not just getting bigger. The iPhone 6 Plus has some interesting differences that set it apart from its little brother, mostly in part to its size.

First, the phone, when turned on its side, can display in landscape mode just like an iPad. In fact, this neat trick makes most of its usefulness in built-in apps like Mail, Calendar, and others. Also, the iSight camera on the iPhone 6 Plus has an optical image stabilization feature - not found on the iPhone 6 - that’s good for jittery selfie takers.

When it comes to battery life, the Plus reportedly has an astounding talk time of 24 hours over 3G, compared to the 14 on the regular iPhone 6. For internet usage, the Plus lasts 12 hours on a Wi-Fi connection (11 hours on an iPhone 6), and for video playback, the mobile device can deliver up to 14 hours on a single charge (only 11 hours on an iPhone 6).

3. M8 Motion Coprocessor – For Your Health!

Apple is getting serious about health. And in response to the numerous health-conscious wearables that have entered the mobile market, the chipset that drives the latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is built in mind to provide the best accurate metrics when it comes to your body.

Behind all this is the new M8 motion coprocessor, which now adds a barometric sensor along with the gyroscope and accelerometer sensors that are already included in previous models. Having that added layer of data is actually a pretty big deal, as it helps apps read the workout intensity between a casual walk and a brisk bike ride.

It also, being a barometer, can detect elevation, which I’m sure can come in handy for rock climbers. Already, Apple has commitments from Nike and other third-party app makers to make good use of all this data once iOS 8 launches.

4. Apple Pay – It Pays To Pay With Your iPhone

If you’re still behind the curve about all this Apple Pay news, here’s a more in-depth crash course. The feature, which is only available on the iPhone 6 and Plus, is Apple’s foray into the mobile payment system business, where users can purchase items with their mobile devices with a simple swipe. No password typing or fumbling needed.

Thanks to the built-in Touch ID that’s apart of the iPhone 6′s home button, and the newly added Near Field Communication antenna (only in the iPhone 6 & Plus), all one has to do in order to pay their bill is to hold the phone alongside a NFC reader while pressing the Touch ID with a finger. The completion of the transaction is alerted by a simple rumble of the phone.

You’ll be able to store your own credit cards within Apple Pay, and already the likes of Visa, MasterCard, and American Express have all signed up for the initiative. As for major retailers who will support NFC-based payments, Staples, Macy’s, Whole Foods, McDonald’s, and Subway are just a few of the names that were shown, with more on the way.

5. Price Drops for the iPhone 5s & iPhone 5c

Not iPhone 6 related, but still important for folks looking for a cheaper alternative for an iPhone, Apple announced that last year’s models would be getting a price slashing just as they’ve done for every new iPhone introduction.

As such, starting on September 19 (the same day of the iPhone 6/6 Plus’s release), the iPhone 5s will go down to $99 on contract, and the iPhone 5c for free on contract. The 5c is pretty good option for a first-time smartphone user, so if you’re thinking about getting an iPhone for a younger member of your family, I see no better choice. Also it’s free!

The iPhone 6 gets announced (finally!) in two versions

iphone-6-v

The iPhone 6 has finally been announced, and now we get to report on prices, release date, and specs. Are you ready? Because here we go.

A new iteration of the almighty and popular iPhone is come among us. This new revision, dubbed iPhone 6 comes in two models, as we previously reported, called iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus respectively based on their size. And, obviously, both of them come with Retina HD Display.

The regular iPhone 6 sports a 4.7 inch display while its Plus counterpart is 5.5 inch display, so it’s even bigger than the Nexus 5. Their resolutions are 1334 x 750 pixels and 1920 x 1080 pixels respectively, so we’re in front of a truly HD capable device.

Users will be surprised at how thin these new iPhone 6 are. The iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick, with the iPhone plus growing only 2 millimeters at 7.1mm thick. They are powered by Apple’s new A8 processor, which Apple claim is 25 percent faster than its predecessor.

Apple claim the new iPhone 6 models are capable of providing 14 hours of talk time on the regular version, but extends to 24 hours with the iPhone 6 Plus. Almost makes you want to start a long distance relationship to see if it’s true, right?

Still, the most important factor, the one that will decide your purchase in the end is the price, right? Well, this is how much they cost.

With contract, the iPhone 6 starts at $199 USD for the 16 GB version, going up to $299 for the 64 GB and $399 for 128 GB. The iPhone 6 Plus, instead, starts out at $299, and goes up to $399 and $499. Is that extra almost-an-inch worth $100 USD? We can’t answer, that’s your call.

7 of the Most Revolutionary iPhone 6 Features

iOS8

As the most highly anticipated iPhone that Apple have released yet, we look at some of the iPhone 6’s most revolutionary (potential) features.

Like a Japanese bullet train or that post-holiday season turkey gut that we all get right around the time Santa has scuttled back off up the chimney and away back to Northern climes, Apple are dependable as ever. Every year, come September, the company releases a swish new iPhone to keep our thumbs a-tapping and a-swiping away on a screen and their profits well and truly through the roof. Not that we complain (often) though, as we still seem to go out of pocket just to pick one up. However, despite posting giant profits once again this year, stiff competition from Android and Windows Phone handsets (yes, even Microsoft’s mobile operating system is finding its own), there’s now a growing sense of consumer fatigue as Apple have failed to be as innovative as their rivals. So as companies like Samsung and LG take a threatening stance that could genuinely do some harm to Apple’s market share, the iPhone 6 could be the most revolutionary iPhone yet.

1. The iPhone 6 Can Help Save Your Life

Well, sort of. With the iPhone 6 Apple will be pushing iOS8, the latest iteration of its handy dandy operating system. Rather than brining cosmetic changes, Apple’s stance with iOS8 is genuinely interesting as it puts a huge focus on fitness and health, reflecting the way that so many of us have used our iPhones in the past whether it be from a helpful food tracking app, to a pedometer to something that provides general tips and tricks to improve our bodies. Also included in iOS8, however, is Healthbook, an app so fancy that one of the features announced to developers earlier this year at Apple’s WWDC 2014 developer event, is that it will be able to collect data from third-party fitness apps (or even the Nike FuelBand wearable if you so prefer) and send the data off to doctors who can then tell you if you need to go in for a check up or do something about your current habits. There’s no word on how effective it will be, but on its own that’s a huge, ground-breaking thing that will become available to us.

2. The iPhone 6 Could Have The Biggest iPhone Screen Yet

One of the most likely pieces of info out of iPhone 6 Rumour Town is that Apple’s new iDevice will launch in two variations – a 4.7 inch version and a 5.5 inch version. Screen size is hardly a revolutionary game and upping the screen size ante just gets you an upgrade to ‘phablet’ status anyway, but for the iPhone 6 this would be pretty huge. For one, it would appeal to the Android crowd who have long enjoyed ranges of screen sizes, especially large ones and it also means that for those who like their mobile gaming with a little more oomph in them than Flappy Bird, they’ll now have an adequate screen to go along with it. The two version option will also give Apple a chance to to test out the duo business model after their ill-fated iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C experiment, so if they pull this one off we could be seeing more iPhone releases in a year than ever before.

3. The iPhone 6 And Its Bigger, Better Battery Life

Ask any iPhone user and they’ll likely tell you that their biggest gripe with Apple’s flagship device is its battery life. If you though that the iPhone’s battery life sucked like a vacuum cleaner stuck on its max setting, then boy must you have been surprised when iOS7 rolled around and made the problem approximately 300 times worse. Unfortunately, battery life is a delicate balance of the size of the battery and its output and traditionally Apple have sacrificed the latter in order to get the battery in the phone at all. However, this year there was a bit of a technology breakthrough meaning that the iPhone 6’s battery could be 15% more powerful than its predecessors and we finally won’t have to roam around looking for random USB sockets when our phone hovers dangerously low on the battery side of things.

4. The iPhone 6 And The Sapphire Screen

Yes, it might sound like the title of a budget Harry Potter movie but hear me out when I say that the iPhone 6’s sapphire screen could be brill. If not as a back of the box feature then for your wallet as a sapphire glass-built display can make it a lot harder for the screen to get scratched, making it far less likely that you’ll crack the thing into a billion tiny, stabby pieces and that you’ll have to fork out to get a new one. This rumour has been hovering around since February and one tech blogger tested out what appear to be the iPhone 6’s sapphire glass display on video by rubbing the thing with sandpaper. A weird experiment? Indeed, it was but it held its own, which is enough proof for me that the iPhone 6 will be perfect for my clumsy tendencies.

5. The iPhone 6 Could Be So Slim That You’ll Forget It’s There

It’s just as well that the glass of the phone could be a lot more hard-wearing as you’ll want at least one other part of the iPhone 6 to be incredibly sturdy if other speculation is to be believed. Some are suggesting that the iPhone 6 will be the thinnest yet (hence the need for those aforementioned tiny batteries to be more powerful than ever), like the tip of your thumb level slimness. I’m not sure if this clarifies as a revolutionary or even ‘necessary’ feature but when the iPhone 6 inevitability does well and people inevitably chalk it down to the slim aesthetics of the device and how they appeal to fashionistas and appearance conscious  consumers, we’ll likely see several other phones following suit, which is a bad or good thing depending on how much you care about your phone’s general cosmetics.

6. The iPhone 6 Will Let You Buy Things Without Money

Ok, don’t get carried I way – I meant physical money. Apple reportedly left out NFC (near field communication) from the iPhone 5S as they wanted to continue being considered as a ‘minimalist tech company’, whatever that means, but they’re apparently throwing that mantra out with the iPhone 6 as it’s set to have NFC capability all of its own. What will this let us do? Well most notably it’ll mean you can ditch that paper money at home and no longer will pennies get lost in unfortunate trouser pocket holes as in connecting your relevant money details to your phone (via your PayPal or bank account etc.) shops with the tech will let you pay for things with just a swipe of your smartphone. With passwords and whatnot too, that’ll even make it harder for you to get robbed of your hard-earned earnings, so the benefits are all round on this one.

7. The iPhone 6 And Automatic Unlock

When Google announced Android L at their I/O developer conference earlier this year, everyone went stark, raving mad over the automatic lock feature which could see the device automatically unlock by swiping a connected wearable over it. Sorry to steal your thunder, Goog, but Apple have recently filed an automatic unlock patent all of their own with Apple’s take on it seeing iDevices unlock in designated ‘safe areas’ such as the user’s home or their place of work. Questions have popped up about this one quite a bit – namely, what happens if bad people take advantage of your automatic unlock function – and there aren’t any answers to that just yet because of how little we know about the feature or Apple’s policies surrounding it, but the chances are come September we’ll know everything once Apple release the iPhone 6.

iPhone 6 comes in 2 sizes, and that’s a fantastic idea

iPhone-6

Phone creators underestimate how important size is when it comes to picking a new device, but Apple is beggining to realize with their iPhone 6.

Apple plans to begin mass production of the iPhone 6, but in two versions that would be released simultaneously. These versions would differ on their size, having one the standard 4.7inch screen we’ve known for years, and the rumored larger 5.5inch the other. The rumor mill seemed to indicate they would release a few weeks apart, but a source from Bloomberg claims that both models will be out on the same day.

The one catch, though, is that being that the creation of the 5.5 version is more complex, stock may vary, and this second version could be significantly harder to get. The production is set to begin in July, which has made several experts predict a launch date for September 19th,
