So you’re telling me there’s a way to gaze at the starry night sky in order to tell what time it is??? No thanks… I’ll just stay inside from the comfort of my couch and admire my Cosmos clock in between an episode of Maddow and the delicious Chinese delivery I just ordered. Only kidding! But seriously, sometimes it’s just nicer to stay inside. For those times, there really is the Cosmos II clock.
It’s the big brother of the original Cosmos clock and it brings the universe inside your living room so you can stargaze from the comfort of home! Its multi-light face features 2 distinct stars that display the hours and minutes. The rest of the twinkling LEDs create the current pattern of the stars overhead depending on the celestial season so you can follow the constellations as they change throughout the months. Better yet, it’s equipped with a Bluetooth speaker so you can stream all the Sigur Ros and other stargaze-enhancing songs you can think of!
Light is undeniably intangible, and a tangible form for it does not exist. For this reason, Jay Kim set out to design a product that materializes light, and the solution came in the form of a beautifully elegant lamp with an added layer of subtle yet intriguing human interaction.
It carries a stunning design that has been inspired by the iconic form of the traditional Balance Scale; this instantly recognizable shape is appropriately associated with the balancing of two objects, making it perfect for this lamp!
The weights, that are held in the minimalistic base, represent the varying amounts of light, and each weight has their level of luminance engraved clearly on their top. The more weight that is placed in tail pan, the higher the lamp will be raised and the brighter the light will shine, this allows Weightify to take on the role of three lights: a night light, mood light and office desk light! Such an alluring and interesting product!
Light is one of the intangible matter that does not exist in tangible form. In terms of science light can be perceived as waves or particles. So, I was imagining what if we can materialize light, and what kind of interesting interaction I could apply to the lamp?
Inspiration
My inspiration of the desk lamp came from the balance scale, a mass measuring instrument, because it has a strong visual language that indicates a relationship of two different objects in terms of weights.
Weights Of The Light
There are four weights with engraved luminance unit (called LUX). It symbolizes that different amount of light is captured inside each weight.
Weight Translate To Light
As the user put the weights on the tail pan, the lamplight gets brighter while it raises the head. Also, the blue accent color cord gives hint of playfulness to people.
Precise Amount Of The Light
Each weight contains a certain amount of the light, and it can be mix weighted for certain use.
As the lamp head is raising or falling, it always parallels to the ground like a gimbal.
Feather-like Swing – pivot joint
Joint holds the beam firmly yet lubricated to create feather-like swing movement of the arm.
As the light gets brighter it covers a wider area.
Additional Design: “Weight Of Light”
This design is more poetic than the original design because it strongly implies that a certain amount of light is captured permanently inside of the dark cloudy resin. (It’s like a fossil in amber)
There are two problems with peripheral power banks: they’re either cumbersome because it becomes an entirely separate device you’re married to OR it’s integrated into your case transforming your otherwise slim phone into a massive brick. The Cling charger finds the sweet spot between these two types of power banks.
This wireless charging design utilizes rare-earth magnets to cling on to your device so it can be removed quickly and easily as needed. Better yet, the magnet system if double-sided so you can attach it to any metal surface for selfies or group photos! When it is attached, however, it won’t block your camera and is shaped ergonomically so your phone rests comfortably in your hand. The modular design can also be used in any vertical outlet and your phone will stay put!
It’s hard to believe that, for some people, this is what it takes to get a little shut eye! The smartphone struggle is real! It’s called MoDi and it transforms your precious device from something that disturbed your sleep cycle into a sleep aid that combats smartphone addiction.
Placed next to your bedside, you first dock your smartphone in MoDi. (Placed in its holder, the glow from the screen is diffused through a screen, creating ambient light.) Engage the sleep system by using your voice. MoDi will guide you through a breathing meditation to put your body and mind at ease. You’ll begin to calm and slowly drift off to sleep. If you happen to wake up in the middle of the night, you can ask for the time rather than glance at a bright screen which could end up keeping you awake for hours.
At your scheduled wake-up time, a soft LED will slowly brighten along with your designated alarm sound. It’s smart tech to kick off your day and help you wind down!
Speaker, Clock, and a Constellation viewing device. Together they sound quite arbitrary, and if I told you they were all the same product, I’d get some weird looks for sure, but I assure you, they’re the most dreamy (and I use that adjective literally) combination ever. The Cosmos, now in its second iteration (there’s a video of version 1 above), combines clock and speaker, but that isn’t all. The clock face itself looks like a starry sky, with two of the largest stars telling you the time. The Cosmos pairs with an app that allows you to set the time as well as play music from the speakers. The square-shaped speaker/clock comes with two full range speakers and a passive woofer to deliver beautiful audio. The clock itself comprises two etched discs of clear acrylic (one with the hour, the other with the minute + constellation patterns) that light up around the edges thanks to an LED strip that sits around the clock’s periphery.
The speaker and clock both sit behind a fine speaker grill that adds an element of awe to the clock. Light shines through the holes in the grill, making the stars in the constellation actually twinkle and shimmer. The result, you’ll have to admit, looks stunning. The Cosmos can either be kept on a tabletop, thanks to the kickstand, or even be wall-mounted. Either way, you’ll be staring at the stars all day long, while hopefully listening to some nice atmospheric jazz!
