In the not too distant future, you may be able to have Amazon goods delivered within just a half hour’s time. How will it work? Former Top Gear host (and future Amazon car show host) Jeremy Clarkson explains the upcoming Amazon Prime Air drone-based delivery service in a new video.
You simply order your item, and a regionally-located drone loads up your package (presumably boxed by a human or another robot). It then takes off and lands at your home, dropping off the package at a location you mark with a special Amazon target. Amazon says the service will deliver goods weighing up to 5 pounds to customers in 30 minutes or less, and the drone’s range is about 15 miles. It’s unclear if that’s a one-way or round-trip number.
Right now there is no firm launch date for the service, but the Amazon Prime Air site says, “we will deploy when we have the regulatory support needed to realize our vision.” It is going to be pretty awesome when our yard becomes an Amazon landing pad.
