If you’re running, put a ring on it!

Not my best Beyoncé pun, but I digress. The Runbell, as direct as its name is, is a quaint little finger-worn bell for runners. Using a spring mounted ringer and a bell small enough to slip on your fingers, but powerful enough to send a signal up to 10-12 feet, to notify people you’re coming through.

Definitely for people tired of breaking their jog to cut through crowds, or for people who are exhausted of constantly having to shout to get slow-walkers to move, the Runbell sounds silly at first, but proves to be quite useful… allowing runners to avoid collisions with people around corners, or pedestrians buried in their phones! Made to fit around two fingers so the bell stays in place, the Runbell comes cast in brass, making it much more sonorous and resonating than steel or aluminum bells.

Don’t yell… just ring the bell!

Million Mile Light Requires No Battery

Million-Mile-Light

Runners need to be seen at night. There’s a slew of LED lights on the market to help them with this, but the Million Mile Light stands out by requiring absolutely no battery, ever. It uses the kinetic energy from your every stride to power a pulsating LED light that’s bright enough to be seen up to 200m away. The IPX4 rating means it’s completely weatherproof and splashproof, and best of all, it costs all of $23.

Jogger Parents: Meet The KidRunner

running-kid-stroller-1

You, dear active parent, want to go jogging. That cool! But the baby? Not so much. Jogging may be in his future, but for now he just wants to cry all day and suck on his thumb (do babies even suck on thumbs, or does that happen later? I have no idea). You could leave him at home with your significant other, but why not just pop him in the KidRunner? It’s a special stroller that, through “the composite frame and innovative, flexible “bow” that connects to the runner, decouples the up/down motion. It’s a smooth, safe, high performance ride for runner and kid.” This means you can run naturally, and your baby will simply feel as though he’s flying through the air, horizontally. It fits offspring aged 6 months to about 4.5 years, and from 10lbs to 45lbs. The KidRunner itself weighs 25lbs, so at most you’ll be trailing 70lbs. That’s quite a bit, sure, but think of it as an added workout challenge.

We don’t know how much it’ll cost nor exactly when it’ll hit the market (all we know is “in 2015″), but you can sign up on the company website to be notified of this.

Stridalizer Brings Smarts To Your Runnings Shoes

Screen Shot 2014-12-09 at 12.14.18 AM

There are those that run to catch buses, and those that take buses to go running somewhere. You see, jogging is a freedom and an exhilaration few get to experience, yet as much as they can love something they can also love it wrong. Runners can develop bad habits, or even never learn the good ones in the first place. Smart insoles Stridalizer hopes to give you the sensor data you’re missing to analyze your stride and develop a more efficient method of locomotion. Yes, there is such a thing as proper running form, although many do prefer to run comfortably regardless of any technical shortcomings. For those that care, here’s how the Stridalizer works.

Once inside your kicks, the soles measure foot pressure across a variety of sensors, developing a moving image of your stride.

We have designed our solution to continue to monitor your run, and interrupt you only when it needs to “alert” you with some important information or quick guidance. For example, if you start persistently overpronating, or if your footstrike pattern changes, you will get a visual as well as an audio alert – this way you can keep your eyes on the trail and still get the information or advice that’s relevant for you – WHEN it becomes relevant!

If you are trying to buildup your pace or find the optimal rhythm for your next marathon, Stridalyzer helps you monitor and track the three fundamental performance parameters: Stride Rate, Stride Length and the most elusive – Ground Contact Time. Using our patent-pending technology, we can measure ground contact time extremely accurately!

The information is nicely presented in an app, which is free with the $75 pledge to own a pair.

When you’re out for run it’s important to be alert and aware of your surroundings. Most people like to listen to music while they’re running but earbuds can easily drown out noises from potential hazards. With the Runner’s Speaker Vest Runners Vest with Speakers you can safely hear your music while still hearing what’s going on around you. The vest has a front pocket to hold your phone while a forward firing speaker on each shoulder projects the sound towards your ears. It has reflective strips to alert vehicles to your presence too:

Waistband Mounted Flashlight: Better than a Headlamp

walking light 650x650 Waistband Mounted Flashlight: Better than a Headlamp
Mounting a flashlight on your waist is clearly superior to the traditional headlamp. Sure if you’re exploring a cave or sewer then a head mounted light is ideal but for walking or running a light the Walker’s Path Illuminating Belt Waistband Mounted Flashlight: Better than a Headlamp lights the ground much better. The belt shines a bright 100 lumen LED light with pinpoint accuracy, no washout or blinding fellow walkers. The light can be set to wide angle of spotlight and the rear of the belt has a pair of pockets, an LED light and reflective strips to keep you safe by making you visible to cars. As it gets dark earlier, this could be very helpful for walkers and joggers.

Garmin Forerunner 10 is a GPS watch designed for outdoor fitness, we go hands-on

Garmin Forerunner 10 is a GPS watch designed for outdoor fitness, we go handson

Having a svelte design is paramount to the success of any fitness accessory -- a desire to avoid hassle often prompts those of us who opt for purging calories without the convenience of a climate-controlled gym to leave smartphones, and even watches at home. That means nifty contraptions like Garmin's new Fenix all-in-one wearable don't make it to the jogging path, making a compact dedicated running watch a more desirable pick instead. That's the idea behind the Forerunner 10, which Garmin is pushing as a dead-simple GPS-equipped wristwatch for runners, joggers and walkers. Water resistant to 50 meters (for ocean-floor sprints?), the gadget tracks essentials like pace and calories burned, while also keeping tabs on your coordinates, letting you download stats like distance and speed through a USB adapter and Garmin Connect.

We weren't able to go for a jog, sadly, though we did spend some time with the Forerunner 10 in an office setting. The watch seemed very straightforward, which you'll find to be quite helpful as you push to match a pre-set pace, without worrying about distractions. It comes in black, green or pink, and while the company suggests that you can wear the watch for non-exercise purposes as well, both colored designs seemed a bit too bright and flashy for regular use. The Forerunner 10 is rated for up to five hours of battery life in training mode, or five weeks in power-save mode (for regular time-keeping purposes), and is available to purchase for $130. You can check one out for yourself at Garmin's Chicago retail location, or you can take a peek in our hands-on photos just below.

Joggobot: The Flying Quadrocopter Jogging Companion

It’s not always easy staying motivated when you train alone. This is one of the reasons why I find the Joggobot interesting. It’s kind of like a robotic coach, that follows you around as you run.

Based on the AR.Drone, the hovering Joggobot quadrotor will attract stares and looks from fellow runners, but it’s certainly easier to keep pace if your smartphone or GPS isn’t enough to keep you motivated. You just need to wear a t-shirt with a specially designed color pattern and the drone will follow you around. That’s kind of cool. You can set your fitness goals via your smartphone to ensure that you keep on pace. The Joggobot was created by Floyd Mueller and Eberhard Gräther at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia to give users something physical to react to when training.

I hope that in the future you can equip it with some tasers so that you’ll have no choice but to keep running. I can already see fitness spas everywhere using these to “motivate” their prisoners guests!
