Sustainability isn’t as difficult as one might think. In the past few months we’ve seen so much in the way of using ecologically conscious materials, from t-shirts made entirely from eucalyptus and algae, to leather made from beer mash, to liquid soap bottles made from actual soap! The bottom line is, designers are always finding creative ways to deal with waste and to develop newer ways to manufacture products in a way that’s sustainable and circular. Take for instance Carlo Ratti’s Circular Orange Juice Bar, an innovative machine that uses every bit of the orange to provide a delightful drinking experience. At first, the oranges are laid out right on the top, in an innovative spiral rail. The oranges instantly become the juice bar’s branding, as their vibrant tangerine color is visible from a distance. Approach the bar, and the oranges, laid out in a nice umbrella shape, provide shade as you sip your juice. As for the juice, each orange is transported, cut, and squeezed by a machine fresh on the spot. The peel is discarded into the bottom pit which dries the waste out, pulverizes it to a fine powder, and binds it with PLA to turn it into a 3D printable filament. This filament is fed right into a 3D printer that prints your juice-cup right in front of you, with your freshly squeezed juice in it! You can discard each cup, as it’s completely biodegradable, giving you a product and experience that is derived from nature, and can return completely to nature with absolutely no impact!

WinkPen Uses Wine, Beer and Other Liquids: Creative Juices

While conceptualizing a sustainable printer, designer Jessica Chan found out that inks used in traditional cartridges are not 100% biodegradable. In pursuing her idea she ended up making a pen that could be refilled with practically any fluid that could stain: wine, beer, juice, etc. Thus the WinkPen was born.

The WinkPen has a double-headed glass nib so you won’t have to worry about rust. One head is for calligraphy while the other one is for fine lines. To get ink, just dip the nib into your ink of choice and twist the WinkPen’s body to suck up the liquid. The pen’s parts are held together by O-rings and can easily be dismantled for cleaning.

Edit: I had a brief chat with Jessica, and she says one of her favorite raw inks is beet juice, but she’s also tried soy sauce, tea and of course coffee. She also confirmed that WinkPen works just as well with traditional ink.

Jessica has already reached her target goal on Kickstarter but as of this writing you can still pledge at least $54 (USD) to receive a WinkPen as a reward.

I know that I’ve been in this situation: stuck in the middle of nowhere with no way of juicing up my phone. The POP aims to change this, thanks to its bucket-like format filled with buckets of power.

The POP, which stands for POrtable Power, is a high-capacity battery capable of recharging multiple mobile devices at the same time. It’s got a 26,000 mAh battery that can recharge an iPhone ten times. It can charge up to four iOS or microUSB devices simultaneously. Thanks to user feedback, they’ve just released a plug-in option called the POP Station which has no battery and is perfect for coffee shops and the kitchen.

The project was launched through the crowd-funding site Kickstarter and at the time of writing, it had already amassed $95,000 of a projected goal of $50,000 with 30 days of funding left. It will be made for sure. You’ll have to pledge $99 to get the AC-based POP Station and $129 for the POP Portable that has a battery. This is $20 off the $149 retail price.
