Somewhat over two years ago we wrote about the Oru Kayak, a folding kayak that performed just as well as a non-folding one. Well now the company is back with a newer, longer model. While the initial ones were 12′ in length, The Coast and Coast+ come in at 16′, which makes them faster, more streamlined boats. They fold up into a bag that measures 32″X28″X13″ (or 15″) and weighs 31 lbs. or 34 lbs. depending on the model. That’s light and small enough to fit in the trunk of a car, to travel with in a plane, and lug around with you to any body of water you want.
The Coast weighs in at just 31 lbs. and takes under 10 minutes to unfold and setup. The Coast+ has all of the features of the Coast, plus many more: it includes ratchet buckles for easy assembly, an ergonomic seat for long paddles, thigh braces for control and comfort, full decklines and rigging for storage and rescues, and a super cool folding hatch for gear storage.
We’re big fans of Kayaking; it’s a great activity and an awesome workout. But having to rent can be a restrictive hassle, so we’re bullish about the Coast and Coast+. The cheapest way to get in on the action is to pledge $1,650, which will give you a Coast Kayak. Prices go up to $2,650 for the Coast+ which comes with an Oru Paddle, Oru Pack, Oru Skirt, Oru Dry Bag and Oru Float bags.
