Ken Block’s drifting nirvana in the one-off electric Audi S1 Hoonitron for “Electrikhana”

Ken Block has bamboozled me all these years with his millimeter-perfect drifting skills in the unbelievable Gymkhana videos. Now a new breed of Hoonigan branded set of wheels is on the horizon paving the way to the future of electric Gymkhana. Well, according to Ken, “Electrikhana” to be precise.

The one-off Audi S1 Hoonitron bespoke electric drift missile with its skillful master has set the Las Vegas Strip on fire for this jaw-dropping video. This is the first ever factory-crafted Gymkhana vehicle, and that makes it even more special whizzy past under the famous neon lights of Sin City.

Designer: Audi

This Hoonitron costing around $10 million – $12 million looks so similar to the Pikes Peak–dominating Audi Sport Quattro S1 of the 1980s, adding the element of nostalgia to the electrified future of drifting. According to Ken, the new installation of the Gymkhana series is the progressive evolution of the brand. While he loves the roar of a V-8 powertrain and turbo engine, the all-electric platform has enough performance under the belly to eat up three times more tires (around 100 tires) than during normal filming. That’s because of the Group B-inspired EV’s Formula E motors powering each axle. The result is an all-wheel-drive bi-motor setup generating a mind-numbing 4400 pound-feet of torque.

The drifting machine gets four 17.3-kWh lithium-ion battery packs feeding the motors running at 800 V. In the S1 Hoonitron there’s one big advantage as Ken certified – the launch is as simple as thumping the throttle pedal. Compare that to a regular car which has to be put in gear and the rider has to wait for the turbo to set in.

It’s obvious that Ken is loving the huge amount of torque generated by this one-off electric Audi drifter, and yet again, I loved all the tire squealing action with the strange motor whining of the Si Hoonitron in the backdrop!

Ken Block’s Gymkhana Seven Video Has Lots of Donuts

Ken Block is insane, anyone who has watched one of his Gymkhana videos would probably agree. Take Gymkhana Five for instance – that video was awesome with Block blasting through the streets of San Francisco in his racing car doing donuts and jumping.

Gymkhana Seven has more in common with that video than some of the more contained driving environments. This time out Block is behind the wheel of a custom-built 1965 Mustang with over 800hp and all-wheel drive, dubbed the Hoonicorn RTR. If you are wondering, this is the first AWD performance Mustang around. Block proceeds to tear up LA (and numerous sets of tires) and do donuts around some of the most iconic landmarks in the city. Watch for the low rider in the video, that is my favorite part:

Gymkhana SEVEN: Just When You Thought It Couldn’t Get Better

If you’ve ever looked at a car and thought “hm, that’s pretty!”, then there’s a chance you’ll like the above video; you don’t need to be a car nut to appreciate this kind of awesome. And if you’ve ever seen a Gymkhana video, featuring the legendary Ken Block, then you already know what it’s all about. But if you thought after 6 iterations of his iconic videos, you wouldn’t be impressed anymore, think again. This time Block is driving a 1965 Ford Mustang that’s been so highly customized, you can barely tell it’s a ‘stang. It clocks in at an astonishing 845hp, and was converted to an AWD for this occasion. In the video, Ken tears down the streets of Los Angeles in what is clearly a high budget shoot, with long stretches of road blocked off to circulation. But you’ll be hooked from the start, with a smoke show for the ages. Also, keep an eye out for the part where he “skips rope” with a dancing low rider.

This video is 12 minutes long but felt like 30 seconds. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Ken Block Plays Vehicular Tetherball in Gymkhana Six

If you’re a fan of cars, racing, or stupid vehicular stunts you’ve probably seen Ken Block and his Gymkhana series of videos. Gymkhana Five saw Block tearing through the streets of San Francisco and the sixth installment in the YouTube video franchise is now available for our enjoyment. It’s cool, but I don’t think it’s nearly as cool as the last one was.

In Gymkhana Six, Block streaks through a course that is set up with red and white boundaries all around making it very tight and narrow. He flies around the course in his Ford Fiesta race car and slides around hitting tetherballs with the back of his car.

He also does doughnuts around some moving Need For Speed Lamborghinis and his trademark guys on Segway scooters. My favorite part is when he slips around corners at full speed and is able to get his car lined up to make it through narrow shipping containers with the doors open. Check out the video for yourself and see if you think it’s better than Gymkhana Five.

Ken Block Signs on As Racing Advisor for EA’s Need for Speed

EA has announced that it has signed a deal with Ken Block in which he will become the Racing Advisor for the Need for Speed franchise. Block is an amazing race car driver who has participated in rally racing and won multiple X-Games medals. EA will also be sponsoring Block and his Ford Fiesta ST 2013 racing car.

The best news from this announcement isn’t that Block will be associated with Need for Speed, at least not for me. The best news is that EA will be working with Block on the release of Gymkhana Six. If you never seen a Gymkhana video and you’re a fan of cars or racing, you’re really missing out. So why not watch the last one now?..

EA says that the next installment in the Gymkhana franchise will be released in its entirety on November 11. EA promises that the new video raises the bar for what can be done behind the wheel of a car. That bar was already pretty high after Gymkhana 5, in my opinion. The next video the franchise will be available directly from the Need for Speed website and on the franchise’s YouTube channel.
