I live alone so I can cook whenever I want (which is almost never) and move around freely in my kitchen. But I’ve also experienced living with several people and manoeuvring around everyone during meal times can be a challenge. There are a lot of people who share their living spaces with other people but most kitchen appliances are meant to be used by one person at a time. When you’re living with other people, that’s not always the realistic scenario.
Designer: Anil Ramesh
This concept developed for Electrolux is designed for such a situation. The Peninsular free-standing cooking range can be accessed from 3 sides so that a couple of people can prepare and cook their food simultaneously. The range can be operated by 1 or more users since it has a rotatable inferface for the oven and the hob. The sliding over door opens to the left but it can also be opened from the front.
The cooking range also has other features to help not just with the cooking but also the preparation and even the eventual service once you’re done cooking. There are borders that can protect you and also to attach accessories to store cutting boards and other kitchen utensils. There are also rotatable drawers that can be accessed from the front and the right side.
There is also an upper storage shelf so you can put your spices and other ingredients. It even has an LED lamp for when you need some extra light. There’s also an option to have a modular hood. It’s a pretty nifty thing to have in your kitchen, especially if you’re sharing it with family members or roomates.
Chai, a beloved staple in Indian households, holds a special place in the hearts of many. It’s more than just a beverage; it’s a symbol of hospitality, warmth, and tradition. A group of three Indian friends living in London, who happened to be accounting and finance experts, recognized the significance of chai in their lives and sought to create a product that would make the preparation of this beloved drink easier and more convenient for working professionals. The result is the Dostea Tea Machine, a groundbreaking innovation that combines technology with tradition to deliver an authentic and hassle-free chai experience. Food is one of the most important needs of humans, and eating can be a very enjoyable experience. Cooking, however, isn’t something a lot of people look forward to because of all the work involved, from preparing to cleaning up. We do have smarter kitchen appliances today, but most of those just take care of the cooking part. There are just so many things to juggle, from weighing containers to different processes to multiple cooking appliances for each one. It can be a veritable mess on your kitchen countertop, which can take the joy out of cooking delicious, healthy meals. What if you can reduce all those to just one or two, especially ones that can be smarter and safer than any other in the market? Pronto, however, easily stands above the rest, and not just because it can Slow Cook, Pressure Cook, Sauté, Steam, Ferment, Keep Warm, or even Sterilize. It also has a built-in kitchen scale, so you don’t have to use separate containers just to weigh ingredients. That’s eight functions in one, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Alto can Air-Fry, Roast, Bake, and even Grill, with less unhealthy oil and consuming less power than a conventional air fryer.
Of course, both Pronto and Alto are smart appliances, but not just because they can be remotely controlled with a smartphone. While cameras and lighting have come of age for the good of home cooks leveraging their social footprints for personal recognition; they require human intervention to record, create, and share. This creates a void to be filled by a comprehensive device, which would leave you nothing to do but ‘cook.’ Enter, the LG COit, a kitchen hub, worthy of your needs.
Designer: Jiun Park and Seohee Lee
Designed for LG, the COit is a robot that can serve as a hub in the kitchen ecosystem. Adequate for use by a novice (who can get cooking guidelines) and professional chefs (who can instantly share their prep), this is more of an autonomous device that brings your focus back from videography to cooking, which is primarily what you set out to do at the first place.
Comprising a mountable rail with a circular display surrounded by a camera, projector, light and a smart grip. All of these modules can move freely and independent on the small rail to cover the entire prep area or away from the fire and vapors. These modules – that clip onto the rail with built-in magnets – can be customized in orientation, depending on user requirements.
When put to use, the camera with a depth sensor can recognize items and intimate in real-time about the correct quantity for the dish. The smart gripper can mark out where to dice or chop, and the display can recognize hand gestures to flip between cooking instructions, or upload a created culinary video for the social media followers to appreciate.
Every once in a while, I’d wake up in the middle of the night and crave a sandwich. Of course I could walk into my kitchen and create one, if I had the ingredients and if I had a sandwich maker or something similar to that. Normally, I don’t have any of those but it’s still nice to dream of sandwiches. Okay, maybe I should really get a sandwich maker one of these days and go grocery shopping so I can make sandwiches, but for now, let’s take a look at one of the new concepts for a simple but functional sandwich maker.
Designer: Bas Kamp
The Warme Boterham is a concept for a sandwich maker that is minimalist but also highly functional in a sense that it can make you a sandwich. It is shaped like an actual sandwich but what makes it different from the others is that it can be used for whatever size of the bread you may want to use. The usual sandwich makers are only made for the usual size of the “unhealthy” white square slice but this one lets you use various sizes and shapes of bread to create your perfect sandwich.
The maker uses has a simple enough design with an old school dial that lets you choose which heat level you want to use for your sandwich. It’s also thick enough to let you add your necessary ingredients to your sandwich like veggies, cheese, meat slices, etc. The concept description doesn’t mention it but the product render also shows waffle shapes so you can probably make waffles or pancakes or some other similar breakfast things here.
It’s also compact and small enough so that if you don’t have much space in your kitchen, you can still use something like the Warme Boterham. The designer also said that the device’s parts can be easily replaced or changed even if all you know to use is an Allen key. This can be something I can use in my kitchen in case I get the craving for a sandwich in the middle of the night.
Elle is a compact dishwasher shaped like an elephant that’s designed to clean the dishes used during a small family meal.
Even if you’re one of the few who enjoys doing the dishes, cleaning up after a big meal can get tiring. In a perfect world, we’d take care of the dishes as soon as we’re finished using them. But following a big meal, all we want to do is cozy up on the living room couch and enjoy the consequences of our food comas.
Alas, the dishes still pile up in the sink and we must tend to our most human of responsibilities. To help make the chore feel a bit more approachable, industrial designer Stalin Jr. conceptualized Elle, a miniature dishwasher shaped like an elephant that scales down dishwashing to its most compact size.
Inspired by the bathing rituals of elephants in the wild, Stalin Jr. designed Elle’s silhouette to resemble the shape of an elephant’s rump. Scaled-down from the size of an actual elephant’s rump to around the same size as an air dryer, Elle is compact enough to fit right on any kitchen countertop.
In conceptualizing Elle, Stalin Jr. explored the possibilities of what a dishwasher could look like in regards to its unique shape and compact size. Primarily conceived for the nuclear family, Elle is compact enough to remain out of the way when not in use and big enough to clean all of the dishes and utensils needed for an intimate family dinner in one wash.
Elle functions as the go-to appliance in between meals, when there aren’t enough dirty dishes to use the full-size dishwasher, but you still want to keep the sink free of dirty dishes. Equipped with all of the functions needed for a thorough cleaning, Elle comes with a touch-automated control panel and wall-mountable water inlet valve.
They say two heads are better than one, so it might make some sense that combining two cooking methods might help cut down on your reluctance to eat healthy.
Many health and fitness experts explain that healthy living really starts in the kitchen, implying that carefully prepared healthy meals are the gateway to that goal that eludes so many. Not everyone, however, is keen on cooking the food themselves for many reasons, and one of the biggest excuses is the lack of time involved in preparing and cooking healthy meals. While you still have to undergo the process of preparing the ingredients you’ll need, this rather hefty cooking device promises you won’t have to wait too long for things to cook, which, in turn, helps reduce power consumption.
The idea behind On2Cook sounds so simple that you’d probably be left wondering why no one has thought of it before. It basically combines two of the most common methods of cooking, namely stove or induction stove and microwave, to cut down on the time that food needs to cook. It offers the best of both worlds with almost no drawbacks, or at least that’s the premise.
Conventional flame or induction cooking cooks the food from the bottom and outside, which leads to the familiar brown color that stove-cooked foods have. The microwave part, on the other hand, cooks from the top and starts from the inside, yielding in a more evenly cooked and often moist dish. This “Combination Cooking” technology also manages to retain the juices and nutrients better than either cooking method in isolation.
On2Cook says that the device is able to cut down cooking times by 50% to 70%, depending on what is being cooked. In addition to halving the waiting time, this also implies that you will use less electricity while cooking. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the device itself won’t consume more power in the long run.
One important design detail is that the On2Cook is a rather large device, and you’ll definitely have to make room for it in your kitchen, alongside the stove and the microwave, which you are unlikely to throw away. The idea, of course, is to have a single cooking device to replace those two, but its design may make certain dishes unsuitable for it. Unsurprisingly, there is an app that will suggest meals and dishes that are a perfect fit for the On2Cook, though there might be a bit of data sharing with the company involved to make this AI-powered system smarter over time.
GoodHoome’s line of kitchen bins is a modular solution for sorting and taking out the trash.
No matter where you live, no one likes taking out the trash. It can be a messy job—the bin is usually overstuffed and removing the liner is never fun when that’s the case. Plenty of solutions have come out in the past, but too often, designers trade simplicity for highly technical designs that don’t stand the test of time. GoodHome, a home appliance brand operated by Kingfisher Design Studio, developed a line of kitchen trash and recycling bins to help simplify sorting trash and throwing it out.
GoodHome’s line of trash bins features several different configurations of three different trash bins consolidated into one product. Kingfisher Design Studio worked with GoodHome to create trash bins that help, “[encourage] households to improve the quality of their recycled waste by making it easier to sort and store.”
GoodHome’s trash bins are comprised of three different sections that help make sorting trash simple. While each household can assign different types of waste for each bin, a typical household would allot one for recyclables, regular trash, and then food waste for compost. To provide enough storage capacity while maintaining a compact size, GoodHome merged those three different compartments to create a one-stop shop for all of your trash needs.
The different modules can also be configured to meet your spatial needs. Each trash bin is made from stainless steel for a simple, modern look that’s also impact-resistant to maximize the product’s shelf life. Then, when it’s time to take out the trash, users can lift the bin’s internal container to gain access to the garbage bag’s liner.
Coconut Faucet is an easy-to-use coconut opener that doubles as a faucet to pour water straight from the coconut.
Whether you’re sick or just thirsty, coconut water is stock full of nutritional value and health benefits. Full of electrolytes and vitamin-rich, coconut water is super hydrating and a smart choice for those recovering from illnesses, surgeries, tough workouts, or just another Friday night. While there are plenty of brands that sell coconut water in closed containers, there’s nothing like fresh coconut water straight from the source.
The only problem is, cutting into a coconut to get to the water is a tough job that generally requires some extra tools. To have an accessible and portable tool for cutting into coconuts and drinking from them, Mutian Yu devised the Coconut Faucet, an easy-to-use coconut opener that also functions as a faucet for pouring.
Tapping into coconuts typically requires two types of tools. First, you’ll have to crack that coconut open with a blunt force tool, like a mallet or hammer. Then, once the coconut is cracked, a knife or other sharp tool can be used to finish the job and draw the water out.
The Coconut Faucet is made up of three parts: a sharp pipe, plunger, and canister. Once the pipe is inserted into the coconut, users can lift the plunger to draw the coconut’s water into the canister from where the liquid can be poured.
Describing each part’s use and design, Yu notes, “The bottom of the [coconut-opener] is designed to have a certain inward tilt which can be closed when it is inserted in the coconut.” Yu then goes on to describe the plunging mechanism, “The red thimble is designed to have a smooth surface, separated from the functional area where the handle needs to be rotated.”
Once each part is appropriately inserted into the given coconut, the device will appear like a small teapot propped on top of a coconut. To pour the coconut’s contents into a cup, users take the canister’s handle, along with the actual coconut, and simply pour.
The Magic Grill from Haruo Matsunaga is a modular, portable, and electric grill that comes with a removable base and a 3mm hot plate to optimize the product’s storage, assembly, and function.
Whether we’re camping or making the most out of small living spaces, portable grills solve a lot of our cooking dilemmas. When camping, having access to a portable grill is always preferable to starting a fire from scratch. In tiny living spaces, kitchenettes might be space-efficient, but weak stovetops can sometimes make cooking more frustrating than it has to be. The Magic Grill, an electric grill designed by Haruo Matsunaga strikes the ideal balance between space efficiency and functionality.
The Magic Grill, as ideated by Matsunaga measures an overall plate thickness of only 3mm using the brand’s proprietary ultra-thin AC film heater. Recognized by Good Design Awards for 2021’s cooking appliances category, the Magic Grill aims to solve storage issues that comes with traditional, bulky electric grills.
Constructed with a removable base, the Magic Grill can easily slide into any cramped cabinet or compact backpack thanks to its modular design. The Magic Grill’s film-shaped, full-face electric hot plate ensures that each dish is cooked evenly. Similar to Teppanyaki cuisine, The Magic Grill utilizes an iron griddle-like hot plate to cook food, ensuring an even cook-through and temperatures.
Leaning on a revolutionary, ultra-thin heater to cook various dishes, the Magic Grill’s innovation stems from the hot plate’s integrated proprietary technology. With a removable base, the Magic Grill can easily be stored anywhere and assembled quickly in the kitchen or on the go, requiring only an outlet for the electric cord to plug into for operation.
