A Cat Collar with an Integrated Laser Pointer: Hours of Feline Fun

Because there are few things in life a cat loves more than chasing lasers, the KiTiDOT Collar (affiliate link) is a cat collar with an integrated laser pointer that points down at the floor in front of your cat so they can chase that little red dot to their heart’s content. Or, if they’re my cats, just close their eyes and fall asleep. They aren’t into playing childish games.

The USB-rechargeable collar features an adjustable-angle laser so you can determine just how far in front of your cat it points and three different lighting modes (low, high, and flickering). Hopefully, none of which will blind another cat who comes to inspect the collar. It also automatically turns off after a half hour of use, so your cat doesn’t pass out from exhaustion.

Cats: for whatever reason, they go nuts for laser pointers. I wonder what they think the red dot is – a firefly? Is it even red to them? I don’t know how cat eyes work. I mean, except well enough to see my leg dangling over the side of the bed in pitch black and claw at it.

6-in-1 measuring device lets you scan spaces, digitize floor plans, and measure lines, curves, and angles

A winner of the 2021 Good Design Award, the new MEAZOR 3D brings a series of useful upgrades to its handheld measuring device. In fact, it can pretty much replace any measuring instrument you currently own.

The tiny handheld device remains relatively the same in shape, size, and form factor, but now sports a newer chip that works faster, and also plots points in 3D, allowing you to quickly mock up floor plans and make CAD models. The laser scanner on the MEAZOR 3D now measures distances up to 40 meters or 131 feet (a 60% increase from the past iterations) and MEAZOR’s new app now lets you turn 2D floor plans into 3D models that can then be rendered, mocked up, and walk-through-ed in most 3D CAD software.

With its iconic ‘pill-shaped’ design, the MEAZOR 3D lets you conquer any sort of measuring requirement. It sports a laser pointer, a rotary wheel, and even an accelerometer that calculates tilt and angles. Whether you’re measuring objects or spaces, gauging curves, or just trying to mount a photo frame without having it slightly tilted, MEAZOR 3D takes care of it all. Designed to be used by architects, designers, decorators, woodworkers, engineers, contractors, fashion/textile personnel, transportation designers, and just about anyone who wants to measure things, MEAZOR 3D provides an all-encompassing measuring experience that replaces the inch-tape, scale, protractor, spirit level, and traditional laser scanner. All your measurements are stored on device and displayed in real-time on MEAZOR 3D’s circular display… and can even be sent to the MEAZOR app for editing, comparing, and sharing.

The MEAZOR 3D now comes with a patented Ultra 3D adapter, a tripod-friendly magnetic base for the MEAZOR 3D that lets you scan points in a room and instantly build a 3D floor plan in mere seconds. With a tilting feature, the adapter allows you to point the MEAZOR 3D anywhere from one single point in the room. Effectively, all you really need to do is place your MEAZOR 3D in the center of a room (even with furniture or obstacles) and it captures all the corners while intuitively fills in the walls, floors, and ceilings, quite literally connecting the dots.

The MEAZOR 3D also has spatial awareness, so when you carry it around to another room (or even another corner of the room), it knows exactly where it is and continues building on the original floor plan without needing to be recalibrated. The spinning base now also captures curves, unlocking new potential features for people who want to capture large curves using easy workflows.

Point Scanner – Capture all reference points and instantly draw a 3D floorplan.

Laser Measure – The precise laser gives reliable measurements up to 131ft/40m.

Curve Scanner – Capture the outlines of curved objects with an accountable scan.

Scale/Rolling – Straight lines to curves, 4 Built-in Modes with 57 Scales.

Protractor – Position your angles in 360 degrees with accurate readings.

Level – Find out whether the surface is horizontal or vertical.

For shorter linear and non-linear distances, MEAZOR 3D’s rolling wheel lets you easily capture and calculate measurements in a wide range of units. Just roll the MEAZOR 3D along a surface and the device will tell you exactly how much distance you covered. Want to work with angles? MEAZOR 3D’s built-in accelerometer works as a protractor and even a spirit level, helping in geometry, alignment, and everything in between.

All data is sent to the MEAZOR App 2.0, which records and saves your measurements for future reference. In its 2nd version, the MEAZOR App now also lets you create lists, make 3D models from 2D floor plans, measure distances inside photos, and also supports exporting your blueprints to Roomle or Measure Square, two independent apps used widely by the architecture and interior design industry.

Measuring under 4 inches, the MEAZOR 3D is easily the smallest, most capable measuring tool on the market. Well, it’s still in development, but the product did win the Good Design Award so there’s no doubt that the underlying tech works… and works well. Speaking of which, the MEAZOR 3D is powered by an STH7 chip that now allows it to process measurements 35% faster than its predecessor (while working in 3D as well), with a 650mAh battery that offers 30 days of standby time. The MEAZOR 3D device ships with a Type-C charging cable, a mini-tripod (for room scans), and the Ultra 3D Adapter that unlocks quite literally a new dimension for the measuring device. You can grab the MEAZOR 3D kit (with the aforementioned accessories) for a special Kickstarter discounted price of $199, and even add additional accessories to your pledge including a silicone cover case, a circular screen-guard, an aluminum tripod, a 100cm extension bar, and even a soft-shell EVA carrying case for your entire kit.

This tiny gadget combines Apple’s magic mouse and a laser pointer to be the ultimate work accessory!

The mouse was born as a direct result of the world’s first Graphical User Interface. As soon as computers began displaying icons, windows, and folders instead of endless lines of code, the keyboard immediately ended up falling short, and the mouse and cursor were born to help work as an extension of your hands. In the digital world, the mouse could help you tap on things, drag elements, zoom in or out, or navigate through large virtual canvasses. It’s been 55 years since the first mouse was invented at Stanford University, and experientially, not much has changed. We’ve still got buttons, scroll wheels, and only in the last two decades did we make the shift to wireless mice. The CheerPod is the Mouse’s most natural next step. Yes, it lets you do the same things you could with your regular mouse, but it also lets you do so much more! The CheerPod works not just with your computer, but with your tablet, phone, and even projector. It functions as a mouse, a trackpad, a remote control, and even a laser pointer… in short, if the mouse and cursor were extensions of your hand within your desktop computer, the CheerPod is an extension of your hand within every digital personal experience!

The CheerPod is a tiny, handheld device that boils the mouse down to its essentials. With a design that’s dictated by the need to be small and remote-like, the CheerPod is to mice what smartphones are to landlines – Portable, rectangular, and heavily feature-laden. It comes with an infrared sensor on its base, like all wireless mice, allowing you to drag your cursor by moving the physical device, but it also allows you to mimic gestures by swiping across screens in mobile and desktop interfaces. The CheerPod, unlike most wireless mice, works without a receiver, connecting directly to laptops, desktops, tablets, and even phones using Bluetooth. It sports a Magic Mouse-inspired touch-enabled surface on its top that lets you click, scroll, zoom, pinch, swipe, and even use multi-touch gestures… sort of like the love-child of a mouse and a trackpad.

While the CheerPod is, in itself, a better, smaller, and more universally compatible version of a wireless mouse, it’s most innovative feature is just a switch-flip away. A simple switch makes the CheerPod go airborne, allowing it from being a ground-based navigation device to something you can hold in your hand like a remote control. Its tiny, remote-shaped profile makes it exceptionally handy, allowing you to use it in presentations to cycle through slides, clicking on elements, or even zoom into images or graphs to delve into small details. The CheerPod even factors in its own laser pointer, allowing you to focus your audience’s attention on parts of your pitch too.

A winner of the 2020 Red Dot Design Award, the CheerPod showcases the evolutionary step in wireless controllers. It combines the functions of multiple products (mouse, trackpad, remote, pointer) into one device that’s not just universally compatible, working with Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android systems, but it’s ridiculously tiny too, allowing you to easily slip it into your laptop sleeve, backpack, or even your pocket to carry along with you (and comes with a battery life of 20 days). Not that everyone would want to carry a futuristic wireless controller with them everywhere, but then again, the fact that you could rush into a boardroom with just a pen-drive and your own wireless remote/laser-pointer sounds like a pretty great thing… or perhaps carry it along with your phone to use as a remote control for when you’re casting your mobile screen to a TV to watch media!

Samsung’s Robot Vacuum Cleaner Can Follow Laser Pointers: Watch out, Cats

Because a robot vacuum cleaner isn’t unique enough nowadays, Samsung equipped its upcoming VR9000H with a few tricks to make it stand out. The most interesting of which is a feature called Point Cleaning, which will allow you to indirectly control the vacuum cleaner using the laser pointer built into its remote control.

Here’s Computer Bild checking out the VR9000H at the 2014 IFA:

Sadly, according to Appliancist the VR9000H will cost a whopping €1,000 (~$1,330 USD) when it goes on sale in Europe this September. I guess I’ll just have to teach my cat to suck up dirt.

Tactical Necktie is What Jack Bauer Would Wear to a Wedding

ThinkGeek is showing off an interesting new product called the Laser-guided Tactical Necktie. It’s aimed at the man who has to wear a tie in the corporate warzone. The necktie goes around your neck like a normal tie, but has special features to help you get ahead in the office – and to torment kitties.

tnt 1magnify

Up top, the tie has a D-loop where you can attach essentials like a grenade or maybe a can of squeeze cheese. Under that is a removable pouch with a buckle where you can keep matches for starting the fire you use to burn the place down next time your check is late.

tnt 4magnify

Underneath that pouch is a molle system, which lets you hang more manly stuff, like bacon-wrapped bacon. The coolest part is the laser pointer in a removable pouch on the bottom. With that pointer, you can torment random kitties with the red dot of death or use the laser to burn out the retinas of your enemy in the cubicle next door.

Now to crush your dreams, this is one of those famous ThinkGeek April Fools’ Day pranks. To give you a bit of hope back, ThinkGeek has a history of making their prank products real – so you never know.

Laser Pointer Of A New Kind

The Sliding Pointer is the next-gen in laser points. It breaks away from the traditional pointer design and is fashioned as a ring. It has two different kinda points that it beams: a circular ring and straight line. Both of them can be used to make your presentation more profound. Easy to use, one can now focus more on the talk and slides rather than fumble with a puny gadget in the hand!

Cat Car Laser Pointer Harness: Remote Uncontrollable

Don’t worry animal lovers. The Cat Car is nowhere near as creepy as the taxidermy cat quadcopter. Invented by Sam Brenner, the Cat Car is a harness that trades the proverbial carrot on a stick with the feline equivalent: a laser pointer. The idea is to “drive” the cat by letting it chase the laser pointer.

cat car remote control laser pointer harness by sam brenner

The laser pointer on the harness is attached to a servo. Sam built a custom steering wheel-shaped controller using an Arduino, a combination gyroscope/accelerometer and a wireless antenna. Sam also pulled of some coding magic to enable the hardware to work. In theory at least: the servo and thus the laser pointer moves in the same direction as the tilt of the steering wheel. Whether or not the cat chases after the laser pointer is another matter altogether.

He should try it on a baby. In a controlled environment of course. With a camera.

Alpha Range iOS game requires a pico projector and laser pointer, we go hands-on (video)

Image

Granted, a magical little smartphone is all the gadgetry most casual gaming fans require to get their fix, but when LaserVR's Travis Haagen popped by our informal meetup at Portland's Ground Kontrol to talk about Alpha Range, we couldn't help but be impressed by the project. The game has a classic Asteroids / Space Invaders feeling to it, but Alpha Range is more than just another bit of mobile nostalgia. For one thing, you're going to need a lot more than just your phone, including a projector (pico will do fine for your needs) and a tripod. You project the game field onto a the wall (in the case of Ground Kontrol, we taped up a few pieces of paper, which worked fine) and interact with objects using a laser point.

When your iOS device is facing the wall, its camera monitors the field, using computer vision algorithms to detect your laser shots in real time, finally discovering a novel use for laser points that doesn't involve annoying rock bands or cats. Hitting the circular enemies will cause them to vaporize or perform other functions like opening up a black hole, depending on their color. The game was pretty responsive and incredibly addictive -- in fact, we were a bit bummed when we finally had to put the laser point down. Such fun isn't cheap, however -- it'll run you $8 from iTunes, on top of the price of all the accessories involved it getting it off the ground. Still, it's nice to see an innovative take like this on a classic gaming scenario.

We've got a video of the Star Trek: The Next Generation-inspired game after the jump.
