This minimal pine wood lamp perfectly marries Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics

We’ve seen a lot of Japandi designs in the past couple of years, and if you’re living under a rock, and don’t know what Japandi is, let me introduce you to it. Japandi is a design trend or style that marries Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. It is the artful blending of both Japanese and Scandinavian designs. Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian functionality are merged together to create a style that makes a space minimal without it being cold. And though, we’ve seen a lot of Japandi furniture pieces, you don’t always come across a Japandi-style lamp! And that’s precisely what the Jakobsson lamp is.

Designer: Yamagiwa x Hans-Agne Jakobsson

The Japanese lighting brand Yamagiwa and late Swedish designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson collaborated to create a collection of beautifully minimal lamps that are designed to cast light “reminiscent of a bonfire”. Called, the Jakobsson lamps, these simple yet sophisticated lamps feature light shades crafted from concentric bands of naturally dried pine wood.

The lamps beautifully merge Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics, and in turn, pay an ode to the utilization of wood, and warm-toned colors that give a cozy and inviting appeal to the products. In fact, the lamps are manufactured by Japanese artisans. The artisans artfully dry and bend the pine into intriguing shapes, while paying special attention to the growth rings found in timber.

“The soft and gentle light cast through the shades is reminiscent of a bonfire and dusk,” said Yamagiwa. Besides featuring a strong yet minimal aesthetic, when it comes to functionality the Jakobsson lamps are pretty practical and versatile as well. They come in three diverse variations – pendant, floor, and table lamp. So, you can pick the variation that suits your living space and your personal preference, and therein add an element of Japandi-ism to your home!

Artemide Integralis light platform allows a safer, well-illuminated, and sanitized area

Artemide Integralis

Light design must be effective if we want it to make a lasting impact, however, achieving such an ultimate effect can be a great challenge. With all the choices and technologies available, lighting can be difficult to build as part of interior design. Interestingly, like most categories in the design world, lighting can be enhanced to reach a point where lights not only provide an excellent play with our perceptions but also where they can help a person’s circadian rhythm and health.

We can go beyond the aesthetics of lighting and just focus on science, and that is where Artemide comes in with the Artemide Integralis. Over at the Salone del Mobile 2022 event in Milan, the Integralis is currently being showcased as a universal light so people can stay safe together. It seems the theme of staying safe and sanitized is still not used up. The pandemic isn’t over, so people are still encouraged to keep safe, clean, and sound.

Designer: Artemide

The Artemide Integralis universal light brings together luminous performance and sanitizing efficacy. Furthermore, the beautiful design allows itself to be integrated into environments and situations where needs are interpreted differently. The people behind Integralis based their work on a social and humanistic vision and the company’s scientific and technological research. As a result, the technology is more of a light platform that is sustainable and innovative that helps in ensuring responsible use of the environment.

Artemide Integralis 1

The idea of the Integralis is that it can act against any pathogenic microorganisms by simply illuminating them. The Artemide Integralis offers selected frequencies of visible light that can inhibit the growth and development of bacteria, mold, or fungi. The act is straightforward and is expected to work the way most disinfecting UV lights work.

Artemide Integralis 3

Artemide Integralis Tolomeo Table Pure Integralis

Such frequencies can also act on viruses, so the effect is a clean surface and environment all the time. But unlike the standard UV lights available, the Integralis is safer for humans and materials within a space. So this lighting solution definitely can help people to live a safer life with more protected health in the days to come.

Artemide Integralis Discovery Vertical

What makes this more compelling is that this technology works on the concept of “dose,” adapting the antimicrobial action’s intensity depending on the absence and presence of people in the surrounding. This also works on the idea of “time” as the light is activated or deactivated by the presence of sensors. Integralis’ intensity is more significant when there are no people, so this means sanitization and safety are guaranteed. During the day, it can still do its job but with a minimum antimicrobial dose only. The maximum antimicrobial dose is activated at night or during people’s absence.

Artemide Integralis

Artemide Integralis

Quality light plus antimicrobial properties seem like a dream. And good news, several light models are available now for the general consumers, with each one offering different looks. In addition, Artemide has integrated the Integralis into some of its current collections already available. These are some of the Integralis models worth checking out: the NUR, DISCOVERY, Tolomeo Table Lamp, and the Tagora Ceiling 570.

Artemide Integralis

The concept is to help improve human safety and environmental quality in different application contexts; thus, the technology is integrated into the current lighting solutions from the brand. In addition, this Artemide Integralis can be managed via the Artemide app as a digital interaction system accessible by everyone. The technology is still patent-pending, but we can expect it to be approved soon.

The components of this table lamp were CNC-milled for precise and interchangeable assembly

The BN! is a modular, customizable table lamp that’s constructed from CNC-milling techniques to ensure precise and interchangeable assembly.

Timber toys, like Jenga and burr puzzles, depend on precise fittings and even edges to fulfill their purpose. Much like those timber toys, wooden product designs that are CNC-milled maintain a symmetrical and unified structure to ensure seamless assembly and operation. CNC-milling also allows designers to keep the number of building materials to a minimum.

Designer: Baliza Norte

From wooden figurines to timber homes, CNC-milling is trusted as the means to format components and cut them down to their most precise angle. The BN! Lamp designed by Baliza Norte, an architecture and interior design project, is constructed using CNC-milling techniques for an assembly process that doesn’t require any hardware or tools.

BN!, a lamp named after the company that designed it, is a tabletop lamp constructed from sheets of plywood that were pre-fitted to fit into each other without the need for extra hardware or tools. Delivered in a flatpack design, when disassembled, BN! Lamp perfectly fits in a 28 x 28 cm square and can easily be packed for shipping or transporting.

Using modern CNC technologies, each component of BN! Lamp “is intended to be a playful object which can be easily assembled or disassembled, it subtlety evokes a timber toy.” Since each module of the BN! Lamp is fitted for precision, each one can be replaced when necessary. The modular and interchangeable configuration of BN! Lamp also allows users to choose the brown color scheme, giving the lamp an air of bespoke appeal.

This minimal desk organizer comes with a unique switch-free mechanism to turn the light on and off!

Award-winning industrial designer, Yohan Lansard, has once again given us a design that we are adding to our “major need!” list. Desk Tidy is both a lamp and a sleek desk organizer (also called desk tidy) for the miscellaneous items that usually cause clutter. The lighting concept is made with machined wood, anodized aluminum, and a diffusing tube.

Both a lamp and a desk tidy, the light turns on when the lightbox is positioned vertically and turns off horizontally – simple, neat, and effective. How the lamp turns on and off is very intuitive as well as the paper-clip-inspired shape makes it even more perfect for your desk. The CMF is minimal and durable, the style would work in any desk or office setup without being distracting.

“Both a lamp and a desk tidy, the light turns on when the lightbox is positioned vertically and turns off horizontally. Available in several forms, this concept makes it possible to respond to different types of objects.” Would be even cooler if the designer could integrate a wireless charging mechanism to provide a distinct differentiation from the metallic charges we see in the market.

The French designer continues to explore this concept which was created for Artemide, an Italian design studio known for its innovative lighting.

Slide the circular Elina light out of its cover to illuminate your home. Watch the video!

Bibliophile’s all over the world agree there is no such thing as too many books, nor is any such thing as too many lights to keep your cozy corners lit. For the exact moment when you want to keep your lamp handy but not have it occupy real estate when not in use, the Elina was created!

The Elina by Dirk Vosding stands on the shelf like a classic book and performs its function as a bookend. But if it’s pulled out slowly, the disc inside begins to glow and sheds more and more light on the surrounding books. When pulled out completely, the illuminated circle serves as a reading light. The Elina sits in a sleeve when not in use, keeping the light itself clean and free of dust. It functions without any switches as such, the interactive nature of the device works as an on/off mechanism. The inner light disc comes to about a 60% of a circle, not the entire disc though that would have been a better touch. The disc can also be rotated to add some targeted lighting in any space.

Fun quirky, and an accent when it is in use – the Elina is the perfect light you need. With my bookshelf always overflowing and me reading late into the night, I would love to have this light around for some uninterrupted reading time that won’t disturb anyone around me with any clicking noises. Best of all, slide it closed with your book, and you are good to go!

Bring your home to life with these inspirational Gantri lighting designs!

Homes is where our our heart is, a 100% right now. The past year has taught us to look at this tiny space in a whole new light! While we can’t get rid of all the cables that snake across our desk, or the random products that end up on our couch, what makes or breaks our interior is the lighting we choose. In fact, the right light can make your clutter seem aesthetic too! My choice of aesthetics is the Japandi aesthetics – a mix of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian design elements that emphasize a clean, clutter-free interior with mood lighting and warm tones. In my aim to find the perfect light setting, I came across Gantri – the brand that connects with the best industrial designers of our time to create a lamp that is made from plants! Gantri uses the world’s first sugar-derieved PLA blends that promises tough material that does not harm the planet. Ticks all your boxes, doesn’t it? To add a bit of minimal magic to your home, here are some of my handpicked lamp designs from Gantri that will elevate your work setup to a whole new level!

The Art Deco movement of the late 19th century helped create new relationships between architecture and geometry. In a time that was certainly considered flourishing, just before the world wars, Art Deco beautifully combined European sensibilities with Eastern and South-American exotic styles, while expressing itself through simple-yet-complex geometric forms and shapes… quite like Picasso’s Cubist art, but with arguably more attention to symmetry and composition. The Arintzea Collection from Muka Design Lab and Gantri pays a tribute to Art Deco’s influences within Basque architecture.

With its jagged, low-poly edges, the Iceberg Table Lamp by Hannah Fink for Gantri looks quite like its source of inspiration, although it promises not to disappear as a consequence of global warming. Made in corn-based PLA, using 3D printing techniques (Gantri’s speciality), the Iceberg Lamp comes with a warm LED light on the inside to give it a cozy glow as it sits on your desk or by your bed. The jagged edges on the Iceberg come with functionality too. The form allows you to dock devices such as mobile phones and tablets between its geometrically sculpted peaks, allowing the lamp to also serve as a stand for your smart-devices. Part ambient light, part smartphone stand, and full heartwarming design!

Meet the Palm lights, a light collection designed for working from home. The Palm is designed to help you channel your focus, creating a comforting workspace that also boosts your productivity. The Palm creation is designed by Gantri’s wellness initiative, Reach. Delivering 270 degree of motion, Palm’s design shines light directly on your desk without inducing eye strain, at the same time, the base occupies as little space as possible to keep your desk clutter-free.

Aptly named Encore, this lamp, by Sam Does Design, is filled with visual metaphors. It comes 3D-printed in Gantri’s special Plant Polymer (GPP), and even though the body of the lamp’s made entirely out of hard plastic, its curtain-inspired form, combined with the material’s inherent translucency, gives it a delicate, fabric-esque appeal, allowing it to look less industrial and more soft and inviting. The Encore is all about visual poetry. While the Weight flipped the ‘light’ aspect of the lamp, making it something that’s actually visually heavy, Encore is rich with an element of performance. Inspired by the curtains that separate an audience from the stage, the Encore lamp plays the very apt role of stage-lighting that brings the room to life when switched on. The Encore’s switch sits on its power-cord, with a diffuser slider for you to adjust brightness, but cleverly enough, its top-view is a modern reinterpretation of the switch… designed to look like the digital icon found on touchscreen interfaces.

Dieter Rams dictates that good design should be simple. The Cantilever lamp by Gantri is the perfect example of this concept. Cantilever is a simple, spherical table light with a whimsical twist – the off center globe sits on an elevated base, washing its surroundings in a warm glow. The geometric design with its warm appeal will make you smile, almost like a loved one inviting you home everytime you walk in.

Muka Design Lab’s Maskor fits comfortable, be it your desktop or your bedside. The award-winning studio is a practitioner of the Slow Design Movement, a movement that focuses on sourcing locally, designing thoughtfully and help people live int he present. Made from Gantri’s sugar-derieved PLA blends, the Maskor (Basque word for seashell) takes inspiration from the texture found on the seashell. Wherever placed, this lamp gives you an almost meditative property and makes it perfect to help cut out distractions.

Suyo mixes light and functionality, which makes it a perfect fit for those uber-busy desk setups that have no space to spare. Be it a plant or upir pencils or any other random knick knacks you choose, Suyo will be the faithful assistant at your side when you need it. Designer McKay Nilson from NYC designed Suyo to create and emotional connection with the objects we share around us. Keeping that in mind, I would certainly double up Suyo as a planter, make it my happy space.

Float is the lamp with a story to tell. Inspired by the Japanese glass fishing floats, the lamp is designed to mimic the gently floating motion of these boats. This lamp can be hung by your desk setup or keep it on your table, the design is sure to attract the attention of everyone who comes across it. Designer Viviana Degrandi says “When it’s on a table, it almost seems like the sphere is floating on water. I wanted to create a light that was flexible, gentle, and simple — that would fit in any room of the home.”

Add a touch of retro with Nicholas Baker’s Pixel! The Brooklyn based designer has a unique inspiration behind this lamp, and he explains,”While shining light through a 3D print, Baker noticed a unique illuminated effect from the print’s grid-like internal structure. Baker expanded upon this effect and drew further inspiration from the retro-digital world and it’s 8bit iconography. Pixel features a diffusive grid where each square emits a different level of lighting – giving the appearance of a “pixelated” light.”

Designed to help declutter your nightstand as well as help you de-clutter your mind, the TRAY light serves as an ambient lamp that also holds and organizes your bedside items like your spectacles, water bottle, phone, etc. It features an accordion-inspired lampshade that glows with a fluted/banded design, atop which sits an opaque tray that holds your belongings. At 9.25 x 9.25 inches, it fits comfortably on most bedside tables, and offers enough surface area for all your belongings. When the lamp’s switched on, your objects are cast in a diffused light that bounces around your room. Without creating any glare or appearing too bright, the TRAY Table Light lets you easily spot and access your belongings and even see clearly around your bedroom. The TRAY Table Light comes as a collaborative effort between Silvon and Gantri. Like all of Gantri’s lamps, the TRAY is 3D printed out of the proprietary Gantri Plant Polymer (GPP) and treated with a matte finish. The inside of the lamp is fitted with a 6W LED bulb, and the TRAY also has a dimmer switch integrated into its TPE electrical cord.

Floor Lamp designs that always deserve the spotlight!

Every household needs their staple products – a cozy couch, a chic coffee table, and a floor lamp that ties up the whole place together! Stylish lighting solutions are part decor, part utility and an absolute necessity to bring your home to life. The lighting solutions here today range from practical solutions to innovative designs and although they are a render, I truly hope some of these designs can be brought to life coz I call dibs on the Giant Ring Light!

Richard Malachowski of Play Industrial Design has created this Giant Ring Light and it is a love-at-first-sight for a bookworm like me! Resembling a halo, the adjustable light can be moved to create the perfect light setting, helping you create the cozy corner you’ve always wanted with a plush chair to keep you in place.

Award-winning industrial designer Andrew Ferrier has created a unique lighting solution, carved from standard rectangular concrete blocks. The casted rectangular plaster is then broken, creating a unique pattern, which is then separated with minimal bars, creating a raw aesthetic with a compelling story, making this a must-have for every home.

I have seen a growing trend in our consuming patterns, millennials especially have moved away from mass-manufactured products, choosing to focus their attention on designs that have, for a lack of a better term, character. The lamp design by Sebastian Halin of the Eskild Hansen Design Studio brings to mind such care and attention to detail that should be cherished across the generations. The pale wooden details merged with rounded forms create a classic lighting design that is sure to be with you through the years.

What does it take to convert a regular floor lamp into a fun masterpiece? Maybe we start by giving it a dose of playfulness! Shane Spencer adds this dose to his design by using an actual pill as an inspiration for his modern floor lamp design. The modern-ness of the design is emphasized by the metallic colors and the rose-gold finish used in the minimal frame, giving it a contemporary look that fits in with every decor style.

Elliot Raderman takes inspiration from the humble circle to create this ring of light! The combination of the pure white light, the dark sleek body, and an electric blue wire make this lamp versatile enough to go from a hostel dorm room to a bachelor’s pad with ease. A fun detail – the black spherical dot acts as an on/off switch to control the light!

Nick Baker strikes again with a collection of lights titled Roam. The lights come in 3 sizes or variations, starting with a floor lamp, a table lamp as well as a wall-mounted version. For me, these lights bring to mind the story of Goldilocks, with a big Papa light, a smaller Mama light, and the smallest baby light that hangs onto the wall!

Even though I come across tons of product designs on a daily basis, the modularity of a design remains one of the most important factors that I take into account before featuring it. Jason Luo’s design wins my heart for those exact reasons! Named the tracking floor lamp, this lamp comes with a track system on both sides, allowing users to attach multiple light heads at various positions to set up a lighting system that works for them. Also, the presence of tracks on both sides means the same lamp provides upwards/indirect lighting along with accent/downward lighting for highlighting a specific object.

What does your light do when not in use? That is the question solved by Kat Reiser’s floor lamp design that doubles as a screen when not in use. The lighting here resembles a cactus/ hedge-like design that lights up the room while adding a bit of green when not in use!

Arthur Martins decided to bring a little wildlife in your home, with this Bird lamp! The elegant yet minimal white bird perches on an equally minimal stand. Come nighttime, the bird lights up with a subtle glow creating a talking point in your room.

Floor lamps come to life with Jose Villa’s dancing lights! A hinge in the design transforms this simple tube-like lights into a dancing structure designed to jazz up any space. Switch on the lights in sections or completely, creating a dynamic structure that you can set up as you need!

A pulley mechanism based lamp designed to add a playful interaction with everyday furniture!

The right piece of furniture can truly make or break the aesthetics of a space. It is about good design and not expensive pieces (although, they do sometimes go hand in hand). While we always pay more attention to the bigger pieces that arguably catch the eye like tables and couches, it is the supporting elements like good lighting that can elevate your interior game – almost literally with this Pulley lamp!

As the name suggests, the conceptual pulley-based lamp adds a dynamic and playful element to the otherwise standard floor lamp which never makes you go “Wow, where’d you get that?”. This lamp reveals geometric movements as a feature of the design. “The focus was on purely revealing the structure of the lamp and the pulley that supports the lamp,” says Kim. Using the sliding switch will slightly tilt the lamp upwards to turn it off and the reverse motion will restore it back to its resting position which is perpendicular to the pole. It is more of a focus light that can help with reading or working as opposed to the traditional floor lamp that provides an ambient light by usually dimly flooding the ceiling which isn’t helpful for the purpose mentioned earlier.

The lamp itself is minimal and sleek, it could fit unobtrusively with any modern interior theme. It almost looks as if Apple launched a lamp because of its simple aesthetics, clean linear design, and the signature white tones. If the concept includes a sound that goes with the tactile feature of turning the light on/off it would be great – who doesn’t love a satisfying, animated click sound! It certainly makes for a lovely upgrade from those black-pole-inverted-lampshade floor lamps that we all had in our 20s!

Lights Designed to breathe life into your modern home

Exquisite lighting designs have the ability to illuminate any live space, and to just add that extra oomph factor! I mean, of course, we need them to see in the dark, but as highly functional as they should be,  a lighting fixture also needs to be aesthetically pleasing. So, we’ve curated a collection of intriguing lighting designs to brighten up your home or office space!

The Mygdal Plantlight by Nui Studio is a revolutionary lighting solution not just because the luminaire is a completely self-sustaining ecosystem where the plants can grow undisturbed, but also because of its one-of-a-kind electrically conductive glass coating. It actually streams the electricity invisibly along the surface, so there’s no need for a cable connection between the power source and the LED.

The Helios Touch is a modular wall light comprising of hexagonal panels, you can move the panels around to create a pattern of your choice! Oh, and did we mention it lights up at the touch of your hand?

Crafted using anodized aluminum and glass domes, the Infinity Modern Pendant by Karice is one magical affair. The source of the light is invisible, however, the subtle rays of light can be seen rotating throughout the dome.

Aqua Creations’ collection called ToTeM is a series of tall, thin and squat sculptural lighting structures. What makes ToTem stand out is its unique manufacturing process. A metallic stand with a cage-like structure on top is taken and swiftly spray-coated with polymer, which forms a lithe cocoon around it. This method creates beautifully diffused lighting with an interesting, uneven texture that is unique for each piece.

This lighting fixture by Ron Neal Lighting Design at Tanner’s Rooftop Bar in California looks exactly like a tree! It forms a glowing shelter over the bar, giving you the impression of sitting under a lit-up tree.

Morgane Tschiember’s Open Space is a series of sculptural lights that use a mix of dense concrete and delicate neon tubes to create a perfectly balanced lighting design. The neon tubes are contrasted by three-dimensional geometric shapes sculpted from concrete.

Modern LED lights fitted into a rustic timber beam! This lighting design by Little Anvil combines a rugged industrial look with a pop of modernity.

Studio Cheha combined a  2-dimensional plate of acrylic glass, and a warm LED light to create a vibrant lamp that will add an impressive wow factor to any desk it is placed onto!

Mascara Tears is a pendant lamp by Saad Syed, which takes inspiration from the black and golden hues of mascara and eyeshadow. It seems like an interesting lighting design for all the ladies out there!

The winner of several awards, Lunair Lighting by Filip Janssens is an intricate mesh of disrupted marble and gold lighting. The result is almost like a piece of art!

Peel Wall Light by YOY looks like a corner of the wall is peeling off, and rays of light are leaking from it. Quite an interesting design to add to your home!

Edgy Lighting Designs that address your lighting needs

There are times we come across designs that make us smack our heads and say – why didn’t I think of that?! This switch light is one of those designs! Working perfectly as ambient light, the switch rocks upwards, downwards, and rests in a neutral position. While in neutral, the light stays off, but the minute you rock it either upwards or downwards, it turns into an ambient lamp, casting light in the direction it’s been angled. Each person’s lighting choices are chosen to bring them comfort and joy. So why shouldn’t we look out for a lighting solution that matches all our needs? In this collection, we have designs that are actually lights that hold plants to rocket-shaped lamps that need to be pushed down to launch their light. So whatever your needs, I’m sure we have a design that meets your lighting needs!

Switch ambient lamp by Pasque D. Mawalla. While in neutral, the light stays off, but the minute you rock it either upwards or downwards, it turns into an ambient lamp.
