Local Motors 3D-Printed EV Has 120-mile Range
3D printers are the wave of the future for more than just printing small repair parts in space or action figures and other items. Some firms, like Local Motors, envision 3D printing as a way to build cars in the future. We talked about the Local Motors Strati last month; it’s their first 3D-printed car.
The company hopes to make the cars available for around $17,000. They won’t exactly win any races with a top speed of only 40mph, but the EVs have a range of 120 to 150 miles per charge – better than a BMW i3.
The giant 3D printer that was used to print the car uses plastic reinforced with carbon fiber and it was provided by Cincinnati Inc. An entire Strati car uses only 49 parts. I will say that the finished car is very strange looking; it’s like a dune buggy out of some futuristic beach movie.
