Louis Vuitton Celebrates Their 20 Year Collaboration With Frank Gehry At Art Basel Paris 2024

For the 2024 edition of Art Basel Paris, which took place from October 18th to October 20th, Louis Vuitton celebrated Frank Gehry and his incredible works. They displayed his massive white fish lamp and other creations inside the Grand Palais. Frank Gehry and Louis Vuitton have collaborated for over 20 years together. Gehry was the brains of the architectural wonder, the Maison Louis Vuitton Seoul, which showcases a stunning glass-covered exterior and fluid lines. Gehry also made a collection of stoppers for the Les Extraits perfume bottles in 2021, and in 2023, Vuitton displayed Gehry’s debut collection of handbags at Art Basel Miami. So it is no surprise, that the brand decided to embellish the Balcon d’Honneur with his lighting design. A wooden arch that Gehry displayed at Gagosian New York is placed around the monumental fish lamp. The arc is built from slats placed in geometric patterns.

Designer: Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry

The white fish lamp isn’t the only work by Gehry that has been displayed. The lamp is teamed up with many of his collaborations with Louis Vuitton, including the aforementioned handbag range from Art Basel Miami. These beautiful bags are protected by glass, giving visitors a clear and concise vision of them. The bags draw inspiration from the architect’s style and design philosophy, which is marked by flowing lines and ballooned shapes.

The Capucines Mini Blossom and Mini Puzzle bag have been displayed, and other bags such as the Capucines MM Concrete Pockets BB Analog, and BB Shimmer Haze – bags that are inspired by architecture he has designed such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the IAC Building in New York City, and the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle.

Louis Vuitton’s Monogram canvas trunk is iconic, and Frank Gehry designed his version of it in 2014. The collection is called the Celebrating Monogram, and it was unveiled for the Maison’s 160th anniversary. The trunk is called the Twisted Box, and it truly does have a twist, it almost looks kind of deformed, yet appealing. Visitors will get an opportunity to glimpse this unique and iconic trunk design as well.

Louis Vuitton’s Bed Trunk gets contemporary update by Nicolas Ghesquière and Pharrell Williams

When you see the words “globetrotting explorers” now, you probably think of rich people hopping on and off airplanes and moving from one luxurious hotel to another. But back in the 19th century, Louis Vuitton thought of a portable bed that still had some creature comforts for frequent travelers and even military officers that were always on the go. Thus the iconic Malle Lit or Bed Trunk was born. Now it has been updated with a modern touch by two of LV’s artistic directors.

Designers: Nicolas Ghesquière and Pharrell Williams

A few months ago, the Bed Trunk was re-introduced to a new generation of Louis Vuitton fans and was meant to be a supplementary bed or a daybed in the living room. Even though the use of it may have evolved already, the updated version still retains some aspects of this traveling trunk, like the foldable aluminum and beech wood structure as well as the internal mattress and mattress cover elements. Aesthetically though, and maybe purpose-wise, it has been elevated so to speak to more contemporary standards. And of course, expect the price tag to be astronomical.

Nicolas Ghesquière, the women’s creative director, has a more futuristic take on the iconic bed, adding engrave metal plates, modernized corner pieces, and an outer shell that is inspired by the 2023 Cruise collection. But inside the trunk, you get a floral-patterned mattress which is actually a version of a jacket from the 2018 Spring/Summer collection.

Renowned musician Pharrel Williams, who is also the Men’s Creative Director for LV, was inspired by the classic Bed Trunk designs, putting distressed striped paterns on the outside and red and white stripes on the inside. He has his LV Lovers brand embroidered on the jacquard mattress and pillow and put on blond wood elements and black aluminum hardware to show ooff the contrast.

LV Nanogram Speaker has travel-friendly design, decorative allure, and exceptional acoustic to match

Louis Vuitton has a habit of redefining the wheel with luxury. Case in point the LV Nanogram Speaker that refines opulence and quality for the seekers on the horizon of portable music and fashion accessory. Designed to take “beauty and sound to destinations unknown” the compact and lightweight LV speaker is a portable successor to the LV Horizon model.

As a premium tech offering, Masion’s creation embodies craftsmanship and quality in an on-the-go fashion accessory that resembles a tiny UFO measuring 13.5 cm across and tipping the scale at 520g. The hefty speaker is made from aluminum but with the embedded leather loop with a removable hook, the LV Nanogram Speaker, becomes a portable and travel-friendly option.

Designer: Louis Vuitton

The first thing you would notice on the speaker will either be the perforated grille or the debossed Monogram, depending on what your perception is. For me, the LV Nanogram Speaker with emblematic codes all over, is a premium speaker and so I see the grille before the logo, but you could have a different opinion.

The impressive design of the LV Nanogram is inspired by the LV’s circular Toupie bag. And in a similar theme, the leather loop and hook can allow the speaker to hang from the backpack, handbag, or just from the belt, if you don’t mind an additional pound on it. If you don’t mind the weight, then the LV speaker can give you a 2.3-inch loudspeaker with a frequency range of 170 Hz to 20 kHz anywhere, anytime.

While the speaker looks all decked up and sublime for indoor usage, it assures it won’t leave you wanting in the outdoors either, for this it boasts a long 17 hours of battery life. The speaker comes with a USB-C charger in the box which can juice up the battery in under two hours. The charging port is the on back of the speaker, hidden away from the plush façade.

Portability demands ruggedness we all know. LV is not known essentially for delivering heirloom speakers in the outdoor division; but adding substance to the design, LV Nanogram Speaker is provided with IP67 rated for protection against dust and water. Priced at $2,230 LV Nanogram comes in three colors: copper, silver, and a “Damoflage” edition. Irrespective of the color, each speaker is available with monogramming all over. The speaker can (courtesy of its built-in LEDs) create a light show that synchronizes with the music you are playing. And when you’re done, you can safely pack the speaker in its travel pouch and get going.

Marc Newson’s Cabinet of Curiosities turns Louis Vuitton trunk into display shelves

I’m about to embark on what will probably be my longest travel away from home. While I’m pretty excited for it of course, I’m also nervous about the luggage situation as I always bring a lot of things with me and pack light is a foreign concept to me. I feel like I want to bring all of my creature comforts as well as make the place I’ll be staying in for three weeks as home-y as possible. The idea behind this newest collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Marc Newson is to have luggage and modular cabinets for the modern (and rich) traveler.

Designer: Marc Newson for Louis Vuitton

The Cabinet of Curiosities (not to be mistaken for the Netflix series) reimagines the iconic traveler trunk from Louis Vuitton and turns it into something that is not just storage for your stuff but something that can be turned into a display of the stuff that you brought along with you. On the outside, it looks like your typical monogrammed traveler’s trunk but the magic happens when you open it and assemble the storage cubes and all the items you want to store and display.

Each trunk comes with 19 colorful and modular storage cubes which you can arrange according to your mood or preference. The trunk can be displayed upright with a 180-degree opening while some of the cubes have a hinged door in case you want to keep some of the objects hidden inside. The bigger ones are just shelves where you can display books, figurines, sculptures, and other knick knacks.

The Cabinet of Curiosities comes in three colorways: VVN natural leather, yellow, and if you want to have more colorful shelves, there’s also a tricolor made up of red, blue, and green boxes/shelves. Obviously, this is not something that you will use to actually travel but it’s an interesting trunk to bring along with you when you need to turn into a cabinet and display your life.

Louis Vuitton unveils the Voyager Skeleton limited-edition timepiece with a platinum body and $55,000 tag

We’ve seen Skull Watches from Louis Vuitton in the past, but it’s rare for the luxury brand to make a truly skeleton watch. Enter the Voyager Skeleton, the French company’s first automatic time-only skeleton watch. Limited to just 150 pieces, the Voyager Skeleton comes with an audacious design featuring a platinum case and a skeletal inner dial that shows the new LV60 movement designed along with La Fabrique du Temps, and angular elements that also rather cleverly hide the iconic LV logo in plain sight!

Designer: La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton

The limited-edition watch sports a monobloc body made entirely from solid platinum. This means that the entire inner skeleton is crafted from a single piece of the precious metal. It sits within a platinum body too, with an attractive round shape that borders on being square for some visual drama. A sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating ensures optimal visibility, while the transparent case-back offers an additional view of the exceptional caliber within. The watch comes with two straps in the box – a navy-blue alligator leather strap, and a navy blue taurillon leather strap, both outfitted with a platinum ardillon buckle.

At the heart of this exquisite timepiece lies the LV60 skeleton movement, meticulously crafted by La Fabrique du Temps, the Swiss watchmaker that was acquired by LVMH in 2011. This caliber offers a 28,800 vph frequency and a 48-hour power reserve, ensuring precise timekeeping and unparalleled reliability. The movement’s skeletonized bridges and plates allow for an unobstructed view of the intricate inner workings, while the LV branding makes itself visible in the skeletal bridge, as well as on the tungsten micro-rotor on the back, and finally the words ‘Louis Vuitton’ engraved into the ratchet wheel on the front.

For Louis Vuitton, the watch embodies the edgy, grandiose nature of contemporary architecture. The jagged lines on both the front and back of the watch represent the use of metal beams, supports, and slats found in modern buildings. There’s a fair bit of modernity, or rather newness, in the LV60 movement too, which was developed specifically for the Voyager Skeleton. The Louis Vuitton Voyager Skeleton is limited to just 150 pieces and sports a hefty price tag of $55,000.

The Louis Vuitton ‘Tambour Horizon Light Up’ is a stunning luxury smartwatch with a glowing bezel

Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon Light Up Smartwatch

Aside from that beautiful glowing bezel, the Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon Light Up smartwatch also comes with the world’s first third-party OS to be bestowed with Apple’s “Made For iPhone” distinction.

Three full years after the company announced the 1st gen Tambour Horizon in 2019, Louis Vuitton is giving the smartwatch a refresh with a newer edition that offers endless customization wrapped within a design boldly and unabashedly highlights the LV brand. The watch comes with a 1.2-inch display that sits within a stainless steel body underneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. However, while most smartwatches with displays often fall within the trap of having a bezel (no matter how minimal it may be), the Tambour Horizon Light Up avoids that trap by turning the bezel into an interactive dynamic element too. As its name suggests, the bezel on the Tambour Horizon Light Up comes with Louis Vuitton’s monogram pattern, and 24 LEDs underneath that cause the patterns to glow in a wide array of colors. This gives the smartwatch the illusion of having a 360° ‘waterfall’ display that bends over the edges to create an endless screen effect.

Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon Light Up Smartwatch

The Tambour Horizon Light Up is equipped with an always-on display that shows you the time in a variety of customizable styles while also allowing you to access the smartwatch’s host of features either by using the touchscreen or the crown and two buttons on the right side of the watch. Notably, the watch comes with an operating system that’s been accredited with Apple’s “Made for iPhone” certification (while also being compatible with Android and even Huawei’s harmonyOS), and you can swipe right to access a ‘My Day’ tab that lets you view your daily tasks, step-counter, and heart rate. Swiping left, on the other hand, brings you to the Tambour Horizon Light Up’s special ‘My Travel’ page where you can access travel plans, view boarding passes, as well as tap into 30 of Louis Vuitton’s expertly curated city guides. Swiping down reveals your notifications while swiping up lets you view the weather and air quality based on your location.

The Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon Light Up is priced rather unsurprisingly at $,3300 (it’s a luxury smartwatch after all). The device will be available for purchase worldwide via Louis Vuitton’s website and at retail stores.

Louis Vuitton’s $475,000 watch is an incredibly ornate time-telling artpiece

Looking less like a watch and more like an ancient relic, the Tambour Carpe Diem is a highly complicated piece of wrist-worn art that has a unique hauntingly beautiful way of telling the time. Developed and produced entirely in-house at La Fabrique du Temps (a Geneva-based complications specialist owned by LV), the intricately assembled luxury wristwatch is Louis Vuitton’s flagship watch of the year… and if you’ve got a trust fund or you happen to be a bitcoin millionaire, the Tambour Carpe Diem could be yours for a cool $475,000.

The word ‘complication’ is pretty fitting for the Tambour Carpe Diem. It looks nothing like you’d expect from a traditional watch, and is filled with incredibly eye-catching Calavera imagery, often associated with the popular Mexican holiday ‘Day of the Dead’. The watch’s face throws you off guard, although that’s totally by design. Created to captivate, the Carpe Diem comes with four automata (complex mechanisms) that bring the watch face to life when you’re reading the time. The watch’s face exists to delight until you get it to tell you the time. With a simple press of the snake at the 2 o’clock position, the watch-face whirrs to life as the rose-gold skull on the dial begins menacingly grinning to reveal the words Carpe Diem written inside its mouth, while the Louis Vuitton logo inside its eye shifts and morphs in shape. The skull is accompanied by an intricately hand-painted and enameled golden snake (by the renowned Anita Porchet), which moves its head sideways to reveal the hour, while its tail points at the minutes. Completing the time-telling experience is an incredible hourglass at the 10 o’clock position that visually counts down the minutes as the day progresses.

The back of the watch is arguably just as consciously designed as the front is. The watch’s exhibition back reveals a black skull-shaped metal plate with a damaskeening finish (also referred to as the Côtes de Genève texture). Behind it lies the LV 525, a movement based on the minute repeating movement constructed by La Fabrique du Temp from a few years ago. The hand-wound movement is made up of a total of 426 components, and boasts of an impressive 100-hour power reserve. All this sits within the Tambour Carpe Diem’s 18k pink-gold case, capped with sapphire crystal displays, and finished off with a premium leather strap and pink-gold buckle. With all those embellishments, it’s pretty easy to justify the watch’s whopping nearly-half-million price tag. It’s less of a watch and more of a luxurious piece of art. Exquisitely designed, with a jaw-dropping time-telling experience (quite literally if you consider the skull’s movable jaw!), the Tambour Carpe Diem is an absolute masterpiece forged and immortalized in an 18-karat pink-gold watch-casing. Probably a much better use of money than Lil Nas X’s satan shoes, if you ask me…
