Odd wooden design object is a table, stool, lamp, or sculpture in one

When we choose furniture, we probably do so for their primary purpose, like a chair for sitting, a table for placing things on, a bed for sleeping, etc. But we also see some pieces that can serve more than one purpose and this is particularly useful for those that either have a small space or need something that’s portable and multi-purpose at the same time. It’s also an added bonus if the piece is well designed enough that it can also have a decorative purpose.

Designer: Kosmos Architects

You can say that this latest creation from Zurich-based Kosmos Architects fits all those categories. They were inspired by the idea of the different numbers and dots on the dice and this became the core aspect of the design. The Dice as they called it, looks nothing like the square piece but is instead a four-in-one piece of portable furniture. It’s a stool, coffee table, leg bench, and a lamp in one. How it turns into each of these four furniture typologies depends on how you turn it, hence the dice inspiration.

When you put the flat surface on top, whether it’s the round or square surface, it becomes a small coffee table that can hold your drinks, books, or any objects that can fit onto it. The flat surfaces can also serve as the seat if you wish to use it as a chair. The two legs serve as the support so you don’t topple over or the items you placed on the table don’t fall because it’s wobbly. The other part of The Dice is the lamp which has a hollow inside and a frosted glass for protection.

This weirdly shaped piece of furniture is light enough that you can hang it if you just want to use it as a lamp. It can even fit into a huge tote bag if you need to carry it around. It uses oak wood as its main material and its 3D-shape was made through KUKA robotics technology. If you don’t want to use any of its functional properties, you can just place it in your space and it would look like a piece of wooden sculpture.

Turn your sleeping area into your office with this rotating furniture

If you’re living in a small space, you’d want to have furniture that can serve multiple purposes. Modular and multi-functional designs have been dominating the scene the past few years especially during the pandemic when the line between work and private life blurred all the more. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and start working from my bed, thinking maybe I should have a desk built in there or have my desk nearer to my bed for a smooth transition.

Designer: Expand Furniture

This wish comes true with the Compatto Rotating Office Murphy Bed with Desk which is literally a bed that can be turned into a working area and even a multimedia space. And when you’re ready to pack it all up at the end of the day (or the middle), you just have to fold it away, turn it all around (literally) and rest in your Murphy bed with the Queen Italian memory foam mattress.

Of course the highlight of this piece of furniture is the fact that you can quickly turn it into a workspace with a few rotations and push and pulls. The wide desk can fit in things like dual monitors, a TV screen, all-in-one iMacs, and small computers. There is also space for file storage, decorations, books, and other knick knacks. There is also adequate places and openings for all kinds of power cords and wires to power your devices.

You will have to assemble everything yourself though as this is a DIY install. But this seems to be a pretty interesting piece of furniture to have if you can manage to put everything together. I will probably have some anxious moments thinking that I will be displacing my office stuff when I’m sleeping but at least I will have a really cool bed and work station in one.

This multipurpose lamp concept is genius in its simplicity

Light is essential to human life, and the variety of lighting products is proof of just how important it is in every aspect of our life. That does mean that there is almost no one design that fits all because we need lighting in different places, such as on desks, on ceilings, and even sometimes in our hands. It might sometimes be more convenient if we can reuse that same lamp design for different purposes, especially if we tend to move around a lot or change setups every so often. Sometimes, that kind of flexibility requires an unconventional and often complicated design, but this modular lamp concept proves that it can actually be as simple as a single letter of the alphabet.

Designer: Youngseok Han (studio Loveit)

It isn’t that common for a desk lamp to become a pendant lamp unless they have some gimmick that makes them transform into different forms. Such designs come with the drawbacks of moving parts and less than trivial functions. In contrast, the C-lamp is a single form, yet it’s that very form that actually allows it to be used in so many different ways and contexts.

As the name suggests, the lamp comes in the shape of the letter “C,” though it might be closer to what some might call the “cent” currency symbol with vertical extrusions at the top and at the bottom. One of those extrusions contains LED bulbs that provide illumination, while the opposite end has a USB-C port for charging the battery inside. The molding might come in two halves, but they come together to form a single piece without any extra part, moving or otherwise.

On its own, the C-lamp can already function as a table lamp that shines its light upward when standing upright, or it can be placed in any direction when lying on its side. It’s also possible to use the same lamp as an ad hoc flashlight, especially since it doesn’t need to be plugged in to be used.

Its uses don’t stop there, though. The large space in the middle lets you hang it on hooks, turning it into a wall-mounted lamp. The gap between the two ends also allows the lamp to be hung on rods, where a row of such lamps could become a rather distinctive pendant lamp hanging from the ceiling. It can also hang on coat racks or stands for a more decorative lighting fixture.

The idea is that the C-lamp can be used in multiple ways and in different places, whether alone or in a group. It can even be produced in different colors to match a motif or your ever-changing aesthetic tastes. The design concept gives you the flexibility to change your setup at any time without losing functionality, freeing you to be creative and expressive with how you light up your space.

This cat tower doubles as a vanity area with a full-length mirror to make the most out of small spaces!

The truth is, cats turn every piece of our furniture into their own climbing tower or scratching post, lookout perch, or their personal couch‒ whether we like it or not, what’s ours is theirs. Sometimes it even feels like cats like our furniture more than their own and when we live in small spaces with cats, territory lines do not exist. Piupaw, a furniture brand for cats, created a cat tower called Co-Living with an integrated mirror and additional storage to produce a piece of furniture for humans that’s designed to be pawed and scratched at by cats.

Developed specifically for small to medium-sized apartments, Co-Living is a full-body mirror and cat tower combined to become a shared, interactive piece of interior furniture for cats and humans alike. When looking at Co-Living head-on, it appears as just another full-body mirror, but a closer look reveals its multi-functionality. With an arched top and bottom, the mirror stands on one wooden peg in front of Co-Living’s rear cat tower. Constructed vertically, Co-Living is designed to encourage cats’ natural climbing tendencies by incorporating multiple carpeted tiers from which they can hop on and off until reaching the top. Co-Living’s wide, circular base, allows enough room for both the cat tower and full-body mirror to remain separate so that cats can climb up and down the tower with ease. Reinforced with a 2mm metal pipe, Co-Living’s main pillar remains stable in place and wrapped in sisal, a natural fiber that can be replaced following heavy use.

Cats tend to turn anything and everything into their own plaything or scratching post. Piupaw’s Co-Living ushers in a new form of cat furniture that integrates human needs into its design to ensure friendly cohabitation between cats and their humans. Everything from hidden coat racks and storage shelves to durable fabric to sustain plenty of scratching, Co-Living is mutable and multi-functional by design.

Designer: Piupaw

On one hand, Co-Living functions as a cat’s climbing tower, and on the other, it works as a vanity area for small bedrooms.

Co-Living was specially designed for smaller living spaces.

Tapping into every cats’ playful and curious tendencies, Co-Living incorporates every play thing you can think of to keep cats entertained.

Integrated storage areas and coat racks turn this cat tower into a multi-functional furniture piece.

Every component of Co-Living is connected to ensure stability and safety.

Sticko Your iPhone

Every once in a while there comes a situation where you need to mount your phone or tablet, to a surface. Sticko is the answer for such situations. Why? It’s light, portable, sticks to any surface (curved surfaces like a mug), madder from heatproof and U.V protected materials. If these reasons are not enough then sleek and stylish nails it.

We got in touch with the team to know more about why and how the product idea came about. Designer Boaz Zucker says, “My wife, Gal and I are dependent on our smart phones but both are very aware of the dangers of driving while being on our phones. Gal surprised me one day and got me a phone mount for our car, however, as an industrial designer it is important to me that the gadgets I own are not only easy to use and versatile, but look good too. The phone mount she got me was bulky and difficult to set up, plus, once I got out of my car and went to where I had to go I was left with no mount for my phone.”

After doing some research on phone mounts that exist in today’s market, Boaz found that they were not easy to use, and lacked in design. So the solution was Sticko, a portable mount that can attach to any smooth surface and is flexible due to the suction cup material it’s made out of.

Advantages of Sticko

Safely in View: Keep your smart phone in sight at eye level and ready for GPS directions, streaming music, and hands-free calls. Eliminates fumbling searches, looking away from the road, and other unsafe behaviors.

Pocket Potable: Weighing of 5 grams and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, Sticko makes the perfect travel companion for everyday use, vacations, and business trips.

The design uses four suction cups two on each side that securely mounts Sticko onto any smooth surface (horizontal, vertical, and angled). Two plastic spacers add stability to your phone while driving.

Cables: Sticko allows easy access to audio cables, and power cords! Keep your phone charged while listening to your favorite tunes.

Simplicity: Sticko’s simple, yet highly functional design does not require any car mount adhesives, magnets, or special cases.

Materials: Sticko uses the highest quality materials (suitable for hot summer days and cold winter nights).
