Can you believe that Star Trek: The Next Generation is already turning 35 years old? That’s practically a whole generation since an entire generation of Next Generation. Well to celebrate such an occasion, Nerf is releasing this Starfleet Type 3 Phaser, as one is bound to do on such occasions. All 35th birthdays should be celebrating by collaborating with Nerf, all of them.
This is actually a set of 2 blasters, the Type 2 Phaser that only fires 1 dart and the big boy type 3 Phaser that lights up and thrills the auditory senses with authentic movie sounds from First Contact. Personally I’d rather hear the soothing whale calls from Star Trek IV, but that’s a whole different can of Borg worms. Whatever that means. This set comes with 7 official Nerf Elite foam darts, which doesn’t sound like a lot, because it’s not. It can fire five shots in a row, so you’ve got two to spare, or lose behind the couch. But you’re such a good shot, all you need is just 1, right?

NERF LMTD Star Trek Starfleet Type-II And Type-III Phaser Blasters
Designed to resemble the Type-II and Type-III phasers used in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Hasbro has just announced preorders for a NERF LMTD set of the weapons. The $120 set includes both a Type-II one-handed phaser pistol and a Type-III phaser rifle. Obviously, I will be everyday-carrying both for protection against the Borgs.
According to Hasbro, “The Type 3 motorized dart blaster has light-up effects that simulate the look of being assimilated by the Borg in homage to the film, Star Trek: First Contact, light-up phaser effects, phaser sounds, authentic First Contact movie sounds, an internal 5-dart clip, and fires one dart at a time. The Starfleet Type 2 Phaser fires one dart and has a pull-back priming handle.” Borgs, beware, and I won’t have them set to stun, either.
One can never have too many NERF guns modeled after sci-fi weapons, that’s what I say. That’s also what I’m trying to convince my wife. It’s…not going well. “You don’t even play with that NERF Mandalorian rifle you bought,” she’ll argue before I have to explain for the hundredth time I’m keeping it mint in packaging as a collector’s item. It’s an uphill battle.

NERF Releasing Real Gjallarhorn Rocket Launcher from Destiny 2
Directly modeled after the infamous rocket launcher from the Destiny video game franchise, NERF is releasing a full-scale replica of the Gjallarhorn. Pre-orders for the limited-edition weapon begin July 7th for people who unlocked the weapon in Destiny 2. If there are any left after July 21st, the rest of us mortals can order one too. The massive weapon measures 40″ long and comes with an equally impressive price tag: $185. Ouch! Looks like my friends and I will have to continue throwing rocks at each other in the woods instead.
The rocket launcher is reloaded just like it is in the game, with the top of the weapon sliding forward to allow its operator to insert three NERF MEGA darts. The Gjallarhorn fires all three darts at once too, in order “to give that visual sense of the Wolfpack Rounds swirling and flying through the air towards your target.” Yeah, well for $185 it better.
Fingers crossed I find one for sale at a yard sale in twenty years for just a couple of bucks because I do not have $185 to spend on a NERF gun right now. And, knowing me, I probably won’t have a couple of bucks to spend on one in twenty years either. I’m bad with money.

Shelby Destroyer Foam Disc Launcher Fires 6 Disks/Second: Move Over, NERF
Look out, NERF, there’s a new weaponized foam launcher in town in the form of the Shelby Destroyer foam disc blaster. The gun is capable of firing six foam discs per second with a 120 round capacity, with both semi-automatic and fully-automatic capabilities. I can already close my eyes and imagine my wife yelling at me to stop playing in the house and go outside.
Currently an already-funded Indiegogo campaign, the Shelby Destroyer isn’t cheap, selling for around $217 through the crowdfunding site, with an estimated retail price of $315. The toy weapons, which remind me of Mass Effect assault rifles, are advertised as “faster, more accurate, and more powerful” than anything else on the market, and they sure as heck better be for that price.
The blasters fire at approximately 160FPS, have 4-color LEDs on the sides for identifying your teammates and displaying battery life, and include removable, rechargeable lithium batteries with an external charging base. They have adjustable power settings for accurate long-range sniping, or spray-and-pray up close shooting. They also have a rail system on top for mounting a scope or laser sight, because apparently there’s no such thing as taking foam disc battles with your friends too seriously. Now, did you remember to bring the flashbangs and smoke grenades?

NERF and Disney Team Up to Sell a $120 Mandalorian Rifle: This Is the Way
The Mandalorian merchandise is like Disney is printing their own money. And now NERF has teamed up with the company to produce this $120 Mandalorian Amban Phase-pulse Blaster. Obviously, this is going to look perfect mounted above my fireplace mantle. I mean I’ll have to find somewhere else for my grandma’s ashes, but still.
The blaster measures a very respectable 50.25-inches (1.27-meters) long and requires 2 AAA batteries, which power the rifle’s 8 different loading and blasting sound effects, as well as its LED-illuminated scope and targeting reticle. Now let’s go bullseye some womp rats!
To operate, a single dart is placed in the spring-action breech-loader, and there’s a handle you pull back to prime the gun for firing, just like the Mandalorians in the show. Pre-order a blaster before December 31st, and the guns should be ready to ship by October 1st, 2021. Wait – October 2021? That’s a long time to go in a galaxy far away. How do I even know Earth will still exist by then and NERF didn’t just take my money and is spending it in the afterlife? Food for thought. Not very good food, mind you. Actually, this is just the wrapper a fast-food burger came in.

Man Builds a Gas Engine-powered NERF Blaster
Because a NERF gun can never have enough horsepower, builder Peter Sripol modded a NERF Elite 2.0 Turbine CS-18 to be powered by a little four-stroke combustion engine mounted on top. Is that a good idea, or the best idea? I’d argue it’s somewhere in-between, but definitely leaning towards the best idea.
The NERF blaster, which previously operated via an electric motor-powered flywheel, now operates via a gas engine powered flywheel for even faster spinning and an almost continuous rate of fire (a great example can be seen around 11:20 in the video). My goodness, what I wouldn’t give to be waiting on the couch with this thing when my roommate gets home from work.
You know, this project reminds me of the time I made a gas-powered laptop. The only difference is Peter’s mod actually works, and I just ruined a perfectly good computer and can’t get the smell of gasoline out of my office.
