Nokia reveals new City Lens augmented reality app for Windows Phone 8 lineup

Nokia reveals new City Lens augmented reality app for Windows Phone 8 lineup

Just last week, Nokia's augmented reality app known as City Lens broke free of its beta shackles, but its developers are hardly sitting on their laurels as they help prepare the company's Windows Phone 8 handsets for store shelves. New to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, Nokia has announced a refined version of City Lens replete with 3D icons and the ability to disable suggestions that aren't within the line of sight. Also on deck, users will be able to query their surroundings more quickly by pinning categories to the home screen and storing favorite searches. As one final addition, Nokia will be introducing the ability to use City Lens in both portrait and landscape orientation. Unfortunately, the company hasn't committed to these new features for the Windows Phone 7.5 version of its app. For a quick peek of what's next, just hop the break for a video teaser from Nokia.

Nokia invites you to stay tuned, offers augmented reality teaser (updated)

Nokia invites you to stay tuned, offers augmented reality teaser video

With just a day to go, Nokia has pushed out another brief teaser, this time pointing towards more map-based contextual functionality. It looks like whatever the company's got up its sleeves, alongside any new Lumia hardware, should include some map-based social network chops and City Lens features -- not much of a shocker given that the latter has just shed its beta status.

Update: Nokia's throw out another video -- which reveals that its good-looking star does manage to find those shoes. Phew. We've added it after the break.

Nokia City Lens exits beta, gives a window on the world to Lumia owners

Nokia City Lens exits beta, gives a window on the world to Lumia owners

Nokia first kicked off the City Lens beta back in May. That was just four months ago, but it feels like an eternity in the mobile space. The wait has come to a welcome (if abrupt) end with the finished version quietly reaching the Windows Phone Marketplace for Lumia owners. From initial appearances, the augmented reality app is functionally the same as its test edition. Point the camera and you'll be shown points of interest in your field of view, with ratings and directions to get you on your way -- if you've seen Yelp's Monocle mode, you'll know the score. Don't be surprised if the source link doesn't initially work, as City Lens is slowly trickling out to Microsoft's servers, but do expect a quicker trip to the sushi bar when the app is in your hands.

The Engadget interview: Nokia VP of Developer Relations Richard Kerris at CTIA 2012 (video)

The Engadget interview: Nokia VP of Developer Relations Richard Kerris at CTIA 2012 (video)

This week at CTIA in beautiful New Orleans, we were lucky enough to spend some time with Richard Kerris, VP of Developer Relations at Nokia. Obviously, there's bit of a chicken and egg situation when it comes to attracting software talent to Windows Phone. Developers favor platforms with an established community, and users prefer an ecosystem with a broad selection of apps. We talked about what Nokia announced at the show -- including apps like City Lens -- and how the company is helping developers with its Business Development Kit (BDK) and App Highlights showcase. Want all the details? Just take a look at our video interview.

Nokia City Lens augmented reality browser hands-on (video)

It warms the heart to see Nokia's Beta-Labs delivering goods we actually want on our handsets -- and even more so when we really want the handsets themselves. Espoo's revered Lumia line has been treated to a new toy and it costs not one red cent: Nokia City Lens. Using an augmented reality browser, the user is offered a virtual view through walls and buildings of various points near you that can be browsed by categories such as food, nearby, sights or searched for with text. Better still, searching for AT&T WiFi will find access points nearby and all you then need to do is hoof it in the direction shown by the small icon on the display. Sound neat? We agree. Follow the break to see a video of it all in action then take your Lumia owning self on over to Beta-Labs to grab a copy.

Nokia City Lens arrives for trials on Lumia devices, augments your reality (video)

Nokia City Lens arrives for trials on Lumia devices, augments your reality (video)

Nokia's rolling more of its experimental Symbian projects out to its Windows Phone hardware and City Lens is the latest to arrive in its immaculately-kept Beta Labs. Not to be confused with existing efforts, it throws together an augmented reality interface to give you a better overview of the best places to eat in town, and those tourist hotspots you simply must see. It'll then connect with your current location (which can be shared with your your contacts) and even offer up directions if you're in need. The app remains in testing for now, but you can help Nokia out by donning your labcoat and registering for its Beta Labs at the source below.
