This sleek collection of sophisticated outdoor furniture is more than just your ordinary street bench

Outdoor furniture is a genre that has slowly but surely been getting a lot more attention. Designers are focusing on creating functional, and aesthetic pieces, that are not only super practical for public use but can also contribute to the beautification of streets and public places. One such design, which also happens to be, the Top Design Winner of European Product Design Award 2022 is ‘Plint’.

Designer: Studio Pastina

Italian design studio Pastina created Plint, a collection of urban furniture for Punto Design. Pastina describes Plint as “more than just a street bench”, and I wholeheartedly agree. The colorful and quirky pieces of this collection are a far cry from the dreary brown benches, we often see scattered around cities. Plint on the other hand plays with diverse materials, geometrics, and visual perceptions, highlighting the interesting contrasts between them. This makes Plint anything but boring!

Thin sinuous lines are placed upon solid sharp volumes. These volumes form the base of the design and seem to be crafted from concrete. They’re quite bulky and could hold pretty heavy weights. The base is also modular, hence allowing each piece to be used individually, or to be combined with other pieces to create compositions of various lengths. The thin lines have an almost grid-like quality, and they come in multiple colors, hence giving each piece a unique and bright personality.

The Plint family includes a variety of different furniture – from benches to chaise longues. When you place all the furniture designs together, you have a charming and cheery collection of pieces “in which visual lightness and bold proportions coexist in perfect balance”. The Plint collection is a sophisticated range of furniture, which takes outdoor furniture to a whole new level, one in which aesthetics, functionality, and ergonomics blend together harmoniously.

Gravitas brings all-weather grated furniture for the outdoors

When choosing furniture for outdoor purposes, whether for your home patio or the outdoor seating of your restaurant or cafe, you have different criteria compared to your indoor furniture. While your living room or indoor seating for your establishment requires comfort and sometimes ingenuity, what you need for the outdoors is something more sturdy and can withstand whatever weather it might encounter. Having something creatively designed is a bonus of course.

Designer: Konture Studio

This new line of outdoor furniture is called Gravitas and the look and design is basically “grated”. It looks sturdy enough to survive strong winds, rains, and snow, although the steel material might make it a little too hot for when the sun is well and truly up during summer. The galvanized grating design for this “all-weather all-rounder” pieces of furniture is perfect for a garden, a patio, or the backyard outdoor seating for a cafe or restaurant with an industrial look or theme.

Aside from being weather-proof, the material also makes it easy to wash and clean, although the nooks and crannies of the grates might need some individual brushing if you want to do a thorough cleaning of the furniture. There are different sets available, including long bench-like seats for a long, rectangular table as well as square stools for a smaller, square table. You can choose between a galvanized or powder-coated finish, depending on the design that you want for your outdoor furniture. There are also different colors available like yellow, green, orange, pink, black.

The grated design goes well with an industrial theme although the comfort level of seating on benches and stools with such a design may be questionable. But if what you’re looking for are ensembles of tables and seats that will last longer than the usual materials, then this is something better compared to other kinds of furniture with less sturdy materials. The Gravitas furniture series is also something different for Konture Studio which normally creates furniture lines for retail stores.

The inspiration for this model came from the fact that there was nothing in the market that was sleek or modern enough to go with the interiors of today’s houses and that is how the MDK9 Dog Haus came to be – no more hiding the kennel in your backyard! This dog house is your pet’s dream house, it’s crafted with Brazilian teak wood responsible for the classy look which rests on a powder-coated steel frame so it’s sturdy. To make it long-lasting, the base of the dog house is made from concrete which also adds to the existing strong structure.

The modular outdoor kitchen – that includes a bar – is made from weather-resistant corten steel, similar to the brand’s other products for home and garden. Laid out beautifully for cooking and serving cocktails al fresco, this outdoor kitchen setup is equipped with an electric, gas, or charcoal grill and wooden cutting board to cater to the cooking needs. A kitchen is not complete without its washing area –Convivium Mobile Bar is fitted with a stainless steel sink that features pull-out taps, so the outright appeal and distinctive appearances of the design are maintained.

The Minka Solar Pod operates primarily as an alternative to meeting places and WFH spots like WeWork and cafes with WiFi. Unlike their indoor counterpart, the Minka Solar Pod and its amenities are entirely powered by photovoltaic panels and lithium-ion batteries. Using solar energy for power allows Minka Solar Pods to be placed anywhere, from busy city plazas like Union Square or public grounds like Hyde Park. Designed to be an outdoor working space, Minka Solar Pods come complete with four USB ports for charging and acoustic panels to quiet outdoor noise while amplifying the conversations taking place inside the pod. So, this two-wheeled paradise is all you need to be classified as a crazy 21st-century nomad who’s leaving virtually no carbon footprint during their solo exploration. If you notice closely, the circular frame of the bicycle holds the foldable day bed stands in the middle. The frame can be oriented for multiple functionalities – for example, for sleeping in the nighttime or as a chair for a comfortable working position or lounger in a picturesque location. Consequently, when it is time to hit the road, the lounge stand folds up to become a part of the bicycle frame for hassle-free pedaling.

Patricia Urquiola designed The Swing Chair for Louis Vuitton! The chair has been inspired by LV’s handbags. Two leather-covered metallic handles hold and support a woven mesh and it instantly makes you think of a handbag. It’s a sophisticated piece of furniture that would look lovely in your backyard or balcony!

The Sunda 2.0 is an outdoor tent that can be used on land or in the skies. Perfect for any sort of weather, you can pitch the Sunda 2.0 up either on dry ground or suspend it between trees during the rain or snowfall. I’d personally prefer the latter just for the view! Designed to house up to 2 people, the Sunda 2.0 uses a simplified architecture that allows it to compress into a duffle bag when folded. Assembling it is a breeze too, thanks to its three spines that use tensile integrity to prop the tent up. The tent’s longitudinal design easily fits people over 6-ft tall into it, while its robust construction and reinforced floor make it practically impervious to damage from the elements. You can have a camping session in your backyard now!

The Israel-based Segment development company combines aluminum with different materials to create a series of unique profiles that enable facade designs that are ever-changing and fit perfectly to their client’s vision. These aluminum profiles are very strong and durable and fit perfectly to withstand outdoor conditions in nearly any climate. As such, they are also great for wet areas and indoor applications. Ideal for use on outdoor kitchens and furniture, these pieces are constructed from modular bodies made of aluminum, 15mm in thickness, combined with other materials like wood, terrazzo, resista, and more. Together they provide a strong, durable product that offers complete design freedom.

This stackable + portable fiberglass table-chair combo takes convenience of home office to the garden

Working from home has helped abate long commutes and undue office distraction from our schedule, but it has eventually made us less social (if you know what I mean). Working alone at home, sitting by the same wall – no matter the congenial work environment you have tried to create – you’re still devoid of what’s going on beyond the zoom meetings and co-working software. Folding furniture has been the first choice for many professionals considering its space-saving functionality but stackable furniture with all-weather durability is going to outpace the former. Presenting a likable option in that space, industrial designer Gökçe Nafak has conceived the uuma portable table and chair combo, which is delivered in one stackable unit you can use in multiple setting both indoors and outdoors.

During the work from home regime, there may be times when you want to move to the balcony/garden and work while soaking in some sun. It seems easy with the choice of outdoor furniture, but if you have tried – you know – meeting the comfort of the workstation outside is not possible, and you end up cutting the adventure short, only to return to the more efficient work environment. With the umma the scenario is alterable. You can have a comfortable seat that can raise or lower on demand and can be clipped open to reveal a height-adjustable table. This table and chair can then be equally comfortable whether you choose to place it outside or inside in your home-office nook. This means, with uuma you can work wherever and whenever you can find the right motivation and creativity you need for your work.

This portable table and chair combo is made from fiberglass, which offers the unit its much-needed portability and durability. Fiberglass by virtue is a sustainable and pretty affordable material, it is also lightweight and robust in nature. The customizable furniture unit comprises four parts primarily that can be removed or put together with minimum know-how. The modular parts of the uuma include a height-adjustable metal leg – forming the central frame – and the lower and upper table layers.

Made in three bright colors to match the modern interiors, uuma comes strapped up in a nylon band, which can be clipped open to unveil the magic. With a subtle move, you can have a chair with a storage compartment, which when needed can be disassembled to deliver a table from within – a table and a chair combo was never so conveniently available!

Bring your yard to life this summer with these inspirational furniture designs!

In these pandemic-stricken times, we find ourselves spending more and more time at home. However, sitting in the same old four walls of our bedroom can become quite boring, and sometimes the only fresh air we really get is when we step out into our yards. Although we shouldn’t underestimate our backyards, they can be locations of major fun, recreation, and relaxation…depending on how we do them up! To take things up a notch, we have Rocco which is an all-rounder piece of outdoor furniture. Its clever design transforms it from a fun barbecue into a sofa or champagne bar and even a smores pit – I think it’s safe to say Rocco is an essential this year! You can add a fire bowl to the base or choose from various other accessories like a grill, tabletop, ice bucket, and parasol base. Customize Rocco to fit what you define as a chill evening.

It’s the season to do some barbecues and grills, and at such times I envy those who actually have one. Due to space constraints, not all of us can own it, and when innovations like The Domino Barbecue surface, it makes me wonder – why can’t they be real! I especially like the way designer Umit Can Koralay has cleverly incorporated a half-a-marble slab that serves as a cover for the grill when laid open, and as a prep/service area, when you’re grilling. The product functions as a barbecue grill, and a piece of furniture! There are two drawers under, one for charcoal storing and the other for cutlery.

The lounger, recliner, and couch have come of age – it’s the era to usher in better ways to sit… and feel like royalty. Thanks to the ‘Hammock Throne’, you can literally feel like that. One of the biggest problems with hammocks is that you need two trees (or poles) to hold them up, and typically they are placed outdoors. Even the home-swing doesn’t match up to the comfort of lazing in the comfortable embrace of a hammock. Folks at Yellow Leaf are solving for this, by giving us the Hammock Throne. Kind of an indoor/outdoor hammock chair; this full-body contraption features a 360° swivel thanks to the anchor base.

The inspiration for this model came from the fact that there was nothing in the market that was sleek or modern enough to go with the interiors of today’s houses and that is how the MDK9 Dog Haus came to be – no more hiding the kennel in your backyard! The Bigfoot Table comes handcrafted out of Western Red Cedar wood with a built-in lightweight stainless steel endoskeleton to provide it with its strength. Right in the center of the table lies an opening that reveals a rectangular fireplace built right into the tabletop. The fireplace is supplied with fuel using a propane canister that can be placed in the hollow space below and comes with a metal outer casing to protect the wood from getting burnt. Scattered within the fireplace pit are faux-stones that help create a truly remarkable burning surface that’s perfect for roasting smores on, and the fire can be ignited electrically with a simple push of a button and even regulated with the turn of a knob.

I’m assuming you’ve grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, or other types of plants in your garden. However, my friend, I can wager that you’ve never grown ready-made furniture in your backyard! It takes some level of expertise though, but Gavin Munro seems to have mastered his hand at growing trees/plants into chairs, lanterns, and sculptural art pieces that can just be harvested and put to use. Each tree uses an armature that gives it its shape. Branches are sliced and grafted to form unbelievable-looking contours and joints that make the products what they are.

The SwingTables are a super cute and comfy piece of outdoor furniture for your backyard! They’re essentially tables equipped with swings. So instead of on boring old chairs, you can sit on the swings, and have a chat or meal with family and friends. I wouldn’t mind one of these in my backyard!

Created by DeiCoon Design, this bench has been integrated with a planter! It’s the perfect combination of furniture meets nature. You can add these benches to your yard, and have your favorite plants growing right out of them. Interesting, no?

Patricia Urquiola designed The Swing Chair for Louis Vuitton! The chair has been inspired by LV’s handbags. Two leather-covered metallic handles hold and support a woven mesh and it instantly makes you think of a handbag. It’s a sophisticated piece of furniture that would look lovely in your backyard or balcony!

Joe Mortell designed “Peppermint Gardens”. And, honestly, if my backyard looked anything like this haven, I would never leave it! What do you think, would you want to remodel your backyard to look something like this?

Playful Pixel Furniture

The Tarta series of outdoor furniture is a clever combination of industrial design, art and technology that offers a contemporary look at transforming the virtual world into the real world! Inspiration for the chair and table was found in geometry consisting of multiple modules that remind of the diamond-shaped pixels of modern displays. These hexagons are matched to each and bent to become three dimensional, creating a texture by variable thickness that moves in space to create an enveloping seat and table top.
