The folks at Philips reached out and asked me if I wanted to give their slick OneBlade shaver a try. Like most guys, I loathe having to shave and anything that makes it easier and more comfortable, I am all in on. I have a coarse beard and after a weekend spent not shaving I gave the OneBlade a go.
The OneBlade isn’t like your typical electric shaver. It specifically says right on the product webpage that the OneBlade does not shave as close as a traditional blade. This isn’t for the guys out there that like a baby smooth face, and it leaves behind a little bit of stubble, which depending on your style, might be the look you’re going for. The upside is that it doesn’t tear up your skin as much as normal razors can.
It didn’t pinch, cut or pull my whiskers, unlike some other electric shavers I have tried in the past. It cut my beard easily, but since I have coarse hair, and it doesn’t shave as close as a blade my long stubble became short stubble. With a full two days of growth, it cut my beard back to a solid 5 o’clock shadow.
I’m more of a smooth face kind of guy – beards get on my nerves. So I gave the OneBlade to my 16 year-old son who has a solid fear of cutting his nose off while shaving with a normal razor. He loved the OneBlade and on his thinner whiskers. It cut very close, and he wasn’t afraid he would cut himself so he actually shaved down his ’70s style mustache to thinness I’ve never seen him achieve with a normal razor.
I did really like the fact that when you shave with the flat of the blade, by pushing in an upward manner, it trims facial hair too. If you need to trim your sideburns, you can simply turn the OneBlade on its side and touch them up with ease just like the barber does using the serrated trimmer edge.
The OneBlade has a replaceable blade that is meant to last for up to four months. The handle is waterproof, so you can take it in the shower too. It comes with three trimming combs for your sideburns or beard in 1, 3, and 5 mm depths. I didn’t try out the trimming combs because I don’t have a beard to shave with them. Its battery is good for 45 minutes of use per charge, so you’ll never run out of juice in the middle of a shave.
I like that the OneBlade is quite inexpensive at just $34.99(USD). The last electric shaver I bought set me back a few hundred bucks. The replaceable blades are $14.99 each and with them being good for four months, I think that’s a bargain. If you don’t like a baby smooth shave, the OneBlade is a inexpensive and very good tool for keeping your facial hair in check.
