Sony’s new BRAVIA speakers are like wearing a home theater around your neck

No it isn’t a neck pillow, and it isn’t even one of those wearable air conditioners, the BRAVIA Theater U is – wait for it… a neckphone. Sort of like a headphone but not placed on your head, the Theater U is Sony’s alternative to booming soundbars and complicated home theater setups. If speakers are for human ears to listen to, why not just directly place them near your ears to begin with? The Theater U immerses you in 360° spatial sound without immersing your entire house. Wear it around your neck, pair it with a device using either a cable or Bluetooth, and the Theater U brings great audio to your ears without blocking the entire world out. Moreover, you can pair multiple neck-speakers to the same playback device like your TV, so that more than one person can listen to a movie or TV show at any given point in time.

Designer: Sony

This isn’t the first attempt at a neckband speaker, but Sony is incorporating its latest tech to create a compelling option. The key feature is Sony’s X-Balanced speaker unit, housed in a lightweight and flexible design. This unit promises clear acoustics and powerful sound pressure for a rich and satisfying listening experience.

But the real magic lies in the 360 Spatial Sound Personalizer. This tech, combined with compatible BRAVIA TVs, creates a customized Dolby Atmos experience. Essentially, the speaker tailors the sound to your unique head shape for a truly immersive effect. It’s like having a personal mini home theater draped around your neck. Given its proximity to your ears, you don’t need to crank up the volume to hear sounds the way you would an actual speaker system – this means fairly personal listening that won’t disturb anyone else beyond a certain radius.

The BRAVIA Theater U’s versatility extends well beyond movie nights. With an IPX4 splash-proof rating, you can wear it worry-free during light workouts or even take it poolside (just be mindful of splashes). Built-in voice pickup technology ensures clear communication during calls, making it a handy companion for work-from-home video conferences.

The speaker boasts Bluetooth connectivity for seamless pairing with various devices, not just your BRAVIA TV. Think laptops, tablets, and smartphones – you can use it for gaming, listening to music, or watching videos on the go. And for those who want to share the immersive experience, the Speaker Add function lets you connect another BRAVIA Theater U for a synchronized audio experience with a friend.

Battery life is a respectable 12 hours on a single charge, with a quick-charge function that delivers an hour of playback with just a 10-minute plug-in. This makes it ideal for extended movie marathons or long commutes.

The Sony BRAVIA Theater U Wireless Neckband Speaker is available for pre-order now for $299.99, fairly decent considering it’s replacing soundbars which are priced in the same range, but giving you the benefit of portability. While it might not be for everyone, it offers a unique and innovative way to experience immersive audio without disturbing those around you.

Christened Devialet Mania, the portable speaker has the peculiar Daft Punk helmet vibe to it, and geeks will want to sport it in their desk setup without a doubt. The meticulously designed speaker has no front or back, boasting a roundish design like a kettlebell at the gym. What makes this portable speaker premium in audio quality is the intelligent use of technology to calibrate sound based on where it is placed. For example, if the Mania is placed near a wall, the speakers will pump the sound to make it wider and thumping. This is done via the four microphones at the base of the speaker, performing Active Calibration to map the room for acoustics. Things like bigger obstacles, furniture and walls to “automatically adapt the audio rendering” to adapt to the surroundings.

Just for the record, Mania has six individual drivers, four Hi-Fi speakers projected in each corner, and high-excursion woofers to create the best sound out there you can expect from portable Bluetooth speakers. The company provides this speaker with an automatic room mapping option to guide the machine learning model to ascertain the level each speaker needs to operate at for the best-sounding audio. IPX4-rated Mania gets built-in Alexa for voice commands along with support for AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect.

Devialet Mania is available in three finish options – Deep Black and Light Gray for $790 and the flamboyant Opéra de Paris has 24-karat gold components priced at $990. The charging dock is priced at $80 for the first two, while the third will get it as a part of the package.

Turn any object into a wireless speaker using this sleek bone-conducting audio device!

Have you ever tried to call out to someone standing far away, only to find yourself instinctively cupping your hands to make your voice louder? What you’re doing is creating a chamber to channel/amplify your voice. Musical instruments like guitars, and most speakers do this too, by having a vibrating element like strings or a diaphragm, and an acoustic chamber that amplifies the sound created by that vibrating element… The Blade, however, isn’t most speakers. It comes without the hollow acoustic chamber you’d find in most speakers, but that isn’t some sort of oversight or defect, it’s a design feature. The Blade is what you’d call a vibration speaker, i.e., it turns anything it’s kept on into a speaker. Place the Blade on a hollow box, a wooden table, a suitcase, an empty vase, or your mum’s Tupperware and the Blade turns it into a speaker! By transferring the vibrations to any object it comes in contact with, the Blade uses that object’s physical properties and its hollowness to transfer and amplify sound. Theoretically, you could even place the Blade against your throat and open your mouth and you’d essentially have music playing through it!

By ditching the acoustic chamber, the Blade allows itself to become extremely thin. Practically the size of a credit card, the Blade can fit right into your pocket while packing the punch of a speaker roughly 20 times its size. The absence of the acoustic chamber also means the Blade can be as ‘big’ or as ‘small’ as you want it. Place it on a small box and you get the kind of sound you’d expect from a tiny Bluetooth Speaker… position it against a massive carton and the sound is exponentially more audible. The Blade works differently with different materials too. Materials like wood generate a more wooden, warm, earthy sound, while ceramics and glass give you something more balanced. Metals, on the other hand, offer a more treble-heavy high-range sound.

While vibration speakers aren’t a new concept, they’re still an exciting area that’s filled with potential. Bone conducting earphones work on the same principle by relaying vibration through the bones around your ear, rather than having audio play into your eardrum. The Blade pioneers the same technology, by giving you a speaker that’s sleek, portable, and infinitely customizable. You could literally place the Blade against your table, on your bathroom mirror, the body of your guitar, or even an empty pizza box, turning objects around you into actual speakers, big and small. Its vibrating tech aside, the Blade works just like any other wireless speaker, and comes with Bluetooth 5.0, an inbuilt omnidirectional microphone for answering calls, a 4-hour battery, and even a built-in FM radio for some extra fun! Introduce two Blades and they instantly auto-pair, turning into stereo speakers with left and right channels! Its small form factor and pocketable size means you can carry the Blade around everywhere you go. Most of the Blade’s fun is in experimenting with different materials to see what works best with your music, but at its heart, the Blade is all about the freedom and power to transform anything around you into a loudspeaker, all with a device that just costs $30!
