This Life-Size Bubo the Owl Figure from Clash of the Titans is Kraken Battle Ready

Everyone needs a faithful companion, and Perseus really lucked out in Clash of the Titans when Athena refused Zeus’s request to send the hero her own pet owl, instead offering a brass-and-iron version of Bubo she had Hephaestus construct. Sure the mechanical Bubo was clumsy, but he came through in the end, and I think we can all agree the end is the most important part to come through in.

Bubo is one of legendary visual effects creator Ray Harryhausen’s most beloved creatures, given life in the movie using Ray’s own ‘Dynamation’ form of stop-motion model animation. Available for pre-order from the BigBadToyStore for the godly sum of $250, this 30-cm Bubo replica was faithfully recreated from the model used in the movie. Unlike the model in the film, though, this Bubo is made of soft vinyl, featuring eight points of articulation for posing how you see fit. I see fit to pose him on my shoulder and pretend I’m a steampunk pirate. Yarrrrr!

Will I be buying one myself? Unfortunately, I don’t have the $250 required, but I will be crafting my own Bubo out of Progresso soup cans and parts I can scavenge from the hot water heater. Sure all the cold showers will suck this winter, but can you really put a price on owning your own poorly constructed mechanical owl friend?

These Cool Displays Turn Your Wall into a Star Wars Museum

It’s not easy to display your cool Star Wars stuff. Your figures don’t really look good in those protective plastic bubbles and display cards just sitting there on a shelf. Even if you buy two of everything so you can display one, it’s still hard to make this stuff look good while on display. Well, Faraway Vintage is here to help.

They offer some unique themed displays, offering pieces of screen-used props, set decoration swatches, film location elements, vintage Kenner action figures, Micro Machines, original Topps trading cards, and first-run 35mm film. Each display is nicely put together and themed as a mini collection suitable for an art gallery or toy museum wall. I used to have all of these as a kid, except for the 35 film, so I would love to see some of these on my wall.

This all started as a personal project when creator Lloyd was looking for a way to show off his Star Wars collectibles and props in a neat way. So he made a few to start. Soon enough, other fans saw these and wanted some for themselves. They’re not cheap – at about $600 to $700 each, but they really are great way to display some Star Wars memorabilia in your home.

Spaceballs Props Head to Auction at Ludicrous Speed

I loved me some Mel Brooks films growing up; Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs were my favorites. Spaceballs was a hilarious mockery of the Star Wars franchise, and one of the most immediately recognizable characters from the film is Dark Helmet. Now, you’ve got a chance to own the actual Dark Helmet helmet that Rick Moranis worn on screen.

The Profiles in History auction #89 will be offering up the iconic, oversize helmet later this month. It’s a vacuum formed black shell attached to the insides of a hard hat and fitted for Moranis’ head. It is listed as having minor wear and age in vintage very good to fine condition and is expected to bring $8,000 to $12,000 at auction.

Also in the auction is the actual model of the Eagle 5 Winnebago piloted by Lone Starr and Barf (Bill Pullman and John Candy respectively). It is said to be highly detailed and in production used very fine condition. It is expected to fetch $20,000 to $30,000.

Adam Savage Ogles Ghost in the Shell’s Incredible Robot Skeleton

Adam Savage might not be on Mythbusters anymore, but you can still watch him on YouTube on Tested. On the latest episode of the series, Savage goes to practical effects shop Weta Workshop to check out the skeleton suit they made for the new Ghost in the Shell movie.

I honestly figured that the Major’s robot skeleton was done in CGI, but there’s a real prop version too, and it is awesome. It’s made from a mix of more than 300 interconnected, 3D-printed, laser-cut, and hand modeled components. Apparently, there’s a ballistic gel “skin” that can be layered over it as well, but we haven’t seen that yet.

Savage and Weta Workshop tech Jared Healy go through all of the ins and outs of the skeleton in the video below:

And if you didn’t watch them already, check out Adam’s videos of Ghost in the Shell’s thermoptic suit and some of the films other awesome props:

I saw the preview for the film before Logan and John Wick 2 and it looks pretty interesting. Sure, it’s taking lots of flack from fans of the anime it is based on, but it is hard to argue with a movie that puts Scarlett Johansson in a skin tight bodysuit.
