BlackBerry now directly selling unlocked Q10 and Z10 smartphones

It has been possible to snag an unlocked BlackBerry Q10 or Z10 in the US for a while if you've been willing to search around, but you now won't have to. BlackBerry has quietly begun selling unrestricted GSM variants of the two smartphones through its US site at prices of $449 for a Z10 and $549 for a Q10. Either device remains LTE-capable, and both should play nicely with AT&T and T-Mobile. The direct sales aren't likely to attract many converts, but they should help American fans who may have a tough time finding a BlackBerry in stores.

Whatever happens at boardroom level, BlackBerry's still gotta shift some smartphones, and now it's pushing one of its flagships over to Sprint. The BlackBerry Q10 will arrive on Big Yellow on August 30th with an asking price of $199.99 before tax -- confirming what we learned mid-way through July. As with all new Sprint handsets, customers will be able to take advantage of the network's unlimited data packages, unlike some other companies we could mention.

BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 get the green light from the Department of Defense

Some good news for the phone makers in Waterloo: the US Defense Information System Agency is OK-ing BlackBerry's first two BB10 handsets for use on Department of Defense networks, confirming that the phones have all the necessary security measures in place. With the governmental go-ahead, the DISA's building out an infrastructure to support 10,000 Q10 and Z10 handsets by fall -- a number expected to triple by year's end. BlackBerry Q10 hits Sprint August 30th, Samsung's ATIV S Neo arrives August 16th

Sprint users awaiting BlackBerry's Q10 and its promised "summer" launch, wait no more -- the Q10 will start shipping pre-orders beginning August 30th, with "all other channels" following on September 13th. At least that's according to an internal release date list provided to Engadget by an anonymous tipster, which also gives Samsung's ATIV S Neo an August 16th launch date on Sprint. Of course, these dates are tentative as always, and could shift before the official announcement. In the meantime, we've reached out to Sprint for an official word and will update this post should we hear back.

Update: Sprint tells us ... not too much. The company's official statement is: "We have not announced availability for either device, and we do not comment on rumors or speculation on product availability dates. We have said BlackBerry Q10 will be available in late summer, and Samsung ATIV S Neo will be available this summer. Exact availability dates for both smartphones will be shared closer to their availability dates."

Suffice it to say, the BB10 crowd hasn't exactly been pleased with the current Twitter app on the platform -- a quick look at the BlackBerry World reviews pretty much sums up the frustration. Now, hoping to alleviate some of those troubles, Twitter's releasing version 10.2 of its application, which brings a hefty amount of improvements to folks with a Z10 or Q10. The app now displays a redesigned UI that makes it easier to browse, as well as other new features including access to DMs and multiple accounts, the ability to save photos being shared, an overhauled Discover tab and more enhancements to search. We have a feeling BlackBerry 10 users will certainly appreciate today's beefy update, so do let us know in the comments below if you're enjoying it thus far.
