Sun-Powered Luxury Sailing

dl_01

Duffy London has developed the Solaris Global Cruiser, a luxury motor yacht that harnesses the power of the sun to provide free, clean fuel. Users can cruise silently at great speeds, as you would with a sailing yacht. Unlike a conventional sailing yacht, however, you are not at the mercy of wind and weather conditions, dictating your speed and direction.

Made using state of the art manufacturing techniques, it has an extremely strong and light hull, shell, and interior. This combined with the very latest in battery and solar technology, creates a super-yacht that could possibly never require refueling. That’s a level of freedom and independence that fossil fuels could never provide!

ICYMI: Soft robot challenge, NASA’s space sails and more

Crazy-fast Catamaran

barchetta_01

As you might’ve guessed from the name of the Barchetta Sv1600HP, it means speed! The hydrofoil-catamaran hybrid style design combines intense engine power with absolute minimal hydro-resistance to achieve stability while cruising at ultra-high speeds over water. With focus placed on aerodynamics and lightness of weight, this doesn’t leave a lot of room for passengers or fancy cabin accessories, hence the small centered cockpit. But with breakneck speeds and thrilling performance, its more about the fun than the facilities!

Asymmetry Ahoy

Designed for the daysailer market, the Axiom yacht focuses on innovation and renewal of the external and internal design of this type of vessel. Based on automotive aesthetics, the AY 45 is characterized by simplicity of form, straight lines, minimal finishing details and deck asymmetry that drives it living functionality. From the side it appears as any other conventional vessel, but from above, its versatile layout is apparent and thoughtfully arranged for passenger comfort.

HUD for Performance Sailors

When it comes to sailboat racing, the difference between winning & losing is the ability to adapt a carefully orchestrated plan to the ever-changing natural & competitive environment, faster than the competition. The key is having the right info at the right time. The Afterguard system provides this info by combining fighter style HUD with boat instrumentation data to give the best situational intelligence & performance metrics at a glance, on a small display mounted on sunglasses made for the harshest of environments.

StartSequence: at a glance the user will know with certainty how the boat is tracking to the start line, freeing the crew to concentrate on the speed build and competition for the perfect star. This is made possible by the intelligent time-to-kill metric that uses the boat’s current heading and speed to calculate the exact amount of time the boat must kill before crossing the line precisely at the gun.

Performance Dashboard: this displays the relevant information to any given crew member, from the helmsman to the trimmer. Metrics include boat speed, speed over ground, wind angle, wind speed, polar targets, heel and depth.

Virtual Tactician: this feature removes the guesswork associated with making a mark or clearing a boat. By tracking the user’s gaze and combining it with the system’s data the user will be able to make split second tactical decisions with relying on a hand bearing compass, lines marked on the deck or other basic means. Simply put, the user will be able to look at another boat and gauge whether they are ahead and whether there is room to cross.

Winging It: How Larry Ellison Harnessed Big Data To Win The America’s Cup

On Aug. 29, 2012, a strange sight emerged on the choppy waters of Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, New Zealand. A black-hulled, 72-foot catamaran topped by a 131-foot wing sail sped across the gulf, first...

Vestas Sailrocket 2 breaks 500meter speed record for sailing, suggests motors are for slowpokes video

Most of the boats achieving technical wonders these days have motors at their heart, even if they're completely fuel-free. Not so Vestas' Sailrocket 2, which just recently broke the 500-meter sailing speed record. A run across Namibia's Walvis Bay, just longer than the nautical mile the team wanted, saw pilot Paul Larsen officially reach a typical 54.1 knots (62.2MPH) with only wind power to carry him along. The necessary technological breakthough, as you'd suspect, comes mostly through the sail. Since the Sailrocket 2 doesn't have to turn in all directions, it uses an asymmetric wing whose optimized shape and lightweight carbon ribbing produce not only a very efficient power-to-weight ratio, but a seemingly logic-defying amplification effect: the sail catches wind generated by the boat's own speed, magnifying the intensity of any gusts until physics prevent going any faster. The kicker may be a slew of additional records coming in short order. As you'll see in the video after the break, Larsen has already hit unofficial averages of 55.3 knots (63.7MPH) over a nautical mile, 59.4 knots (68.3MPH) over 500 meters and 64.8 knots (74.6MPH) at peak speed. If we could reach that kind of pace on the water, we'd start to look at everyday motorboats as downright antiquated.
