Smart door lock offers key-free security without replacing your deadbolt

You’ve probably seen sci-fi flicks that show how convenient it would be to just approach a house and have the door automatically open for you. While that might sound like the ultimate convenience, our current reality is far from reaching that idyllic future scenario. Never mind security concerns against hackers or, worse, software bugs, the requirements for installing smart door locks alone are enough to frighten off all but the most tech-savvy and capable of homeowners. Having to replace existing knobs and locks is a daunting and expensive task, which is why this “retrofit” smart door lock is so noteworthy as it allows almost anyone, especially those without much DIY experience, to install the lock in just minutes and still keep the same deadbolt they’ve been using for years.

Designer: Yale

On the one hand, it’s understandable why installing a smart door lock would require removing the old, not-so-smart one. Not only does it require electronic parts, it would also be advisable that all the parts actually work well together. On the other hand, it might not always be economical or practical to replace existing deadbolts, especially if you have quite an expensive design or are renting out rooms or houses. Retrofit locks try to bridge these two extremes and Yale just launched its first attempt at making life easier and less stressful for such people.

The new Yale Approach with Wi-Fi is a deceptively simple kit that promises you’ll only need around 10 minutes and a single screwdriver to install it over your existing deadbolt, depending on how familiar you are with some handiwork. It’s an indoor-only design so you only need to change that part of the lock and that’s all there is to it. Of course, you still need to plug in the wireless Yale Wi-Fi bridge somewhere near the Yale Approach and connect it to your network, but that’s pretty much on par with any other smart lock.

Once that straightforward installation is done, you can enjoy the key-free and sometimes hands-free experience of having a futuristic lock for your home. You can have it lock the door automatically once you’re out or even unlock it when you’re near, all without having to even pull out your phone. You can also give other people access, permanently or temporarily, to the lock, which is important for renters. Best of all, you can still use your old keys as a backup in case things go awry.

The Yale Approach with Wi-Fi arrives along with a new Yale Keypad that adds an extra layer of security to your new smart home system. This wireless backlit keypad can simply be stuck to a wall near the lock, allowing authorized users to simply enter a code to unlock the door. A future model will even come with a fingerprint sensor so you can stop worrying about memorizing all those numbers (or using an insecure sequence like “1234”). Depending on the situation, this new Yale combo might still be inadequate as far as smart security systems are concerned, but it’s still better than the alternative of going through all the work and costs of installing a new lock that you might end up not liking anyway.

SwitchBot’s new smart lock opens with voice commands, fingerprints, passcodes, and even your Apple Watch

It’s 2024 and if you’re bummed that you can start your EV with your mobile phone, but can’t open the door to your house with it, the folks at SwitchBot just designed the perfect little accessory. Designed to retrofit onto your existing deadbolt door lock, the SwitchBot Lock Pro has 15 different unlocking options, from letting you use your phone or Apple Watch, to voice commands, biometrics, numeric PINs, or hey, even your regular key if you’re feeling a little old-fashioned. Or maybe get it to unlock when you say “Open Sesame” if you’re feeling extra whimsical!

The Lock Pro follows in the footsteps of the original SwitchBot Lock, which retrofitted onto deadbolt locks to turn them into smart IoT locks. The new Pro variant still transforms deadbolt locks into smart ones, but comes with a sleeker design that integrates right into your door frame, a higher torque output that unlocks and locks doors with absolute ease, and even the inclusion of a number pad and biometric sensor that lets you unlock doors with a PIN or your fingerprint. There’s a minimal amount of assembly, the Lock Pro runs on replaceable AA batteries, and it also supports the Matter IoT protocol which means the Lock Pro can seamlessly communicate with all your other smart home devices, whether they’re from Google, Apple, Amazon, or any other third party company running on the Matter protocol.

Designed with both American and European markets in mind, this retrofit smart lock integrates seamlessly into existing hardware, supporting all common deadbolt locks. Installation is a breeze, taking a mere 5 minutes – for US deadbolts, SwitchBot Lock Pro comes equipped with tailored adapters that allow for effortless cylinder changes, while European users can opt for different mounting plates based on the protrusion of their cylinder. This ingenious design eliminates the need for complex DIY modifications, making the transition to a smart lock a minimal-effort experience without any specialist tools or even requiring calling a handyman. You visit SwitchBot’s website to check whether the Lock Pro is compatible with your door lock for the US or the EU.

At the core of the SwitchBot Lock Pro lies an upgraded motor that boasts an impressive 20 kgf/cm² of torque – more than double the force of its predecessor. This increased power ensures smooth operation, even with multiple locks, and faster unlocking times, providing effortless entry every time. Whether you’re a tenant, apartment resident, or a smart home enthusiast, the SwitchBot Lock Pro is a must-have addition to your connected living space.

Fingerprint Enabled

In essence, the Lock Pro builds on the sheer elegance of its predecessor, which allowed wireless locking and unlocking using Bluetooth devices like your phone or Apple Watch, or through smart home commands via the SwitchBot Hub. Retaining those existing features, the Lock Pro adds a few more for good measure, including a numeric keypad that sits on the outside, allowing residents (or any of your guests) to enter the house with a bespoke PIN code. Aside from the keypad, the SwitchBot Lock Pro sports a biometric sensor too, with a lightning-fast fingerprint recognition time of just 0.3 seconds. It can store up to 100 fingerprints and supports virtual passwords, emergency passwords, and fingerprints for enhanced security.

With up to 15 unlocking solutions available, including one-time passcodes, expiration passcodes, remote unlocking, voice unlocking, and Apple Watch unlocking, the SwitchBot Lock Pro offers a variety of usage methods that cater to pretty much all kinds of people whether they’re tech-savvy or tech-averse. Yes, you can still use your regular key, just in case you’re wondering! Support for Matter means your Lock Pro can also communicate with all your smart home devices, allowing you to remote lock/unlock your door or even set up routines (like automatically locking all doors after midnight). The Lock Pro, however, still requires the use of SwitchBot’s Hub to communicate via WiFi with other devices.

The SwitchBot Lock Pro runs on standard 4 x AA batteries, offering an impressive battery life of 6-9 months, 1.5 times longer than other retrofit smart locks. An optional SwitchBot Dual Power Pack offers an eco-friendly alternative to standard single-use batteries, with a rechargeable design and an ingenious relay power system that ensures uninterrupted use by letting you hot-swap one battery pack at a time while the Lock Pro runs solely on the second battery pack while one of them charges. Additionally, the Lock Pro features passive power supply unlocking, allowing access even if battery replacement is delayed.

Employing AES-128-CTR encryption at the software level, the Lock Pro provides robust protection against potential virtual threats. On the hardware front, the lock sports an auto-lock feature that utilizes a magnetic sensor, ensuring heightened safety and reliability by automatically securing the door based on its open/closed state, and surpassing the effectiveness of timer locks. Users can stay informed with real-time updates on lock and door statuses via their phones, and receive automatic reminders, ensuring peace of mind with every exit.

This isn’t SwitchBot’s first IoT rodeo – the company’s product roster features both standard as well as creative IoT devices like their award-winning curtain-opening robot, the button-pusher that turns regular switches into smart ones, and the Meter – a temperature and humidity sensor that lets you ensure every room in your house is at the right environment setting. The Lock Pro is a perfect addition to SwitchBot’s ecosystem, advancing their existing Lock product with newer features and more unlocking methods including keypad and fingerprint-based input. Whether you’re a family seeking convenience and security, an Airbnb host managing guest access, a fitness enthusiast with hands full of groceries, or a smart home aficionado seeking seamless integration, the SwitchBot Lock Pro offers a tailored solution. From fingerprint unlocking for family members to remote guest access for hosts, quick access for post-workout arrivals, and automated routines for smart home enthusiasts, the Lock Pro quite literally ‘unlocks’ a whole world of possibilities!

Yale Assure Lock 2 adds a pop of colour to your door with Pantone’s Color of the Year 2023

More often than not, door locks and other related security devices carry monochromatic and simple colors. There’s probably a reason for that which has something to do with the lock or device fitting in with doors, cabinets, etc. But there are also times when color-loving people would want some pop into their security devices to make them stand out. Yale is releasing a new variant of their famous smart lock that would appeal to that demographic.

Designer: Yale and Pantone

Yale has parrtnered with Pantone to bring what is probably their most colorful product to date. The Yale Assure Lock 2 is releasing a version of this popular smart lock that carries the color of the year: Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta. It makes your door, cabinet, or whatever room it is locking a bit more colorful if you’re already tired of the same old black, gray, metal, and other monochromatic colors that the brand usually carries. Even if this shade of magenta isn’t your favorite color, it certainly adds a certain pizzaz to your entryway.

“Partnering with Pantone, the world’s leading color authority, speaks volumes about our dedication to creating products that fit both your lifestyle and your home,” said Garrett Lovejoy, Vice President of Product, Yale and August. “We’ve taken a unique, eye-catching hue like PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta and applied it to a traditionally understated, discreet device — creating a stunning, one-of-a-kind smart lock that makes a powerful first impression of the home.”

Aside from its color, the lock is also 30% smaller than their usual Assure smartlocks so this means it can still blend in if it’s the same color as your door and if it isn’t, it doesn’t really scream out loud. It can still accentuate whatever door it is that you want to highlight in your home or office. It has all the other features that the Assure Lock 2 brings including full key-free entry, remote access, and auto-lock and unlock. It’s also compatible with most doors so there’s that assurance.

Design-wise, it’s pretty interesting to see Yale branch out into more colorful designs and it should appeal to maximalists who are looking for more colorful locks. Security-wise, I don’t know if it’s a deterrent to those who would try to “pick” this digital lock or if it’s something that screams out “pick me!” because of its color. If this is a success, expect some more colorful things from Yale.

World’s first smart chain lock brings incredible durability and convenient security for your bike

Personal transportation devices such as e-scooters and e-bikes have joined bicycles and motorcycles as a popular means to get around places. Unfortunately, their popularity has also caught the attention of less-than-savory individuals who might have other plans for things that are not theirs. Making matters even worse is how traditional safety mechanisms like regular chains and padlocks haven’t been able to keep up with the times, let alone effectively protect your precious metal steed from more creative thieves. There are newer “smart locks” that offer convenience but fail to actually upgrade the protection itself. In order to truly protect your bike these days, you’ll need to upgrade your whole security strategy, which is what this innovative chain lock brings to the table, providing a smarter and better way to keep you from losing your precious property.

Designer: LINKA Design

Click Here to Buy Now: $139 $194 ($55 off). Hurry, only 199/300 left! Raised over $180,000.

Your property can be insured when locked with the ART and Sold Secure certified* LASSO.

LASSO can withstand up to 2,100lb-f (9.5 kilonewtons) pull force. Good luck getting through that!

Every inch of the LINK LASSO is engineered to withstand any attack from different tools, including bolt cutters, hammers, and even hacksaws. The square manganese hardened steel chain provides toughness from within, while a 100% recyclable polyethylene sleeve protects the chain from the outside. The lock itself is protected by a corrosion-resistant stainless steel 304 frame. If it sounds like it’s built like a tank, it’s because it’s “obsessively engineered” to provide the utmost security for your bikes.

LASSO’s patented Quick Lock is fast. Lock and unlock in under 1 second.

Don’t worry if your phone battery dies. Simply enter your unique phoneless access code (PAC) into your LASSO and you’re back on the road in no time.

Despite all that toughness, locking and unlocking the LINKA LASSO couldn’t be easier and just takes under a second. Like most smart locks, you unlock it primarily with your phone, but you don’t have to fret if your phone dies even before you could get to your bike. Simply enter the Phoneless Access Code or PAC on the LASSO and you’ll be riding into the sunset in no time at all. Or you could opt to buy a SmartMotion Key (sold separately) to have a dedicated key to unlock the LASSO. The SmartMotion Key only broadcasts when it’s in motion, preventing any hacker-type spoofing attacks. Pairing a SmartMotion Key can extend the battery life of the LASSO from 3 to 12 months.

LASSO is IP 67 water & dust resistant. LASSO can be submersed under water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

The smart chain lock offers more peace of mind beyond durability and convenience. Its IP67 dust and water resistance rating means it will survive downpours and an accidental dip in a puddle. You can also share your access with family or friends through the LINKA mobile app even if you’re halfway around the world. But for those who try to take it without your permission, the LASSO will sound an alarm when it detects unwanted movement. Don’t worry about embarrassing moments, however, because Travel Mode deactivates the alarm to prevent it from getting triggered accidentally.

The LINKA LASSO is designed not just for bikes and scooters but can also lock kayaks, skis, and snowboards. The largest LASSO 10 Moto can even protect motorcycles, garage doors, and watersports equipment. LINKA is so confident in the chain lock’s durability that is generously giving a 5-year warranty with the LASSO. For just $139, you can get the LINKA LASSO Series 8 together with a SmartMotion Key, offering an unbeatable price to not only keep your bike safe but also give you peace of mind.

‘Simple and clever’ slap-band bicycle lock takes inspiration from the fun children’s toy

It makes securing your bicycle as easy as *snap*!

Locks are useful. They’re also pretty boring. I don’t think I’ve ever come across an actual bicycle lock I’ve liked – they look incredibly archaic and utilitarian, and given the chance, you’d probably hide the lock away in a bag instead of letting it destroy your bicycle’s aesthetic. The Slapstick Smart Bicycle Lock, on the other hand, reinvents the entire bike lock category with its fun, fresh, and fast-deploying design. Inspired by the popular children’s toy, the slap-band, this smart lock literally snaps around your bicycle frame, with a belt-like locking mechanism that adjusts to match the size of your frame and the pole you’re attaching your bicycle to. Affixing the lock is as easy as just snapping it in place and watching the band automatically wrap around your bicycle. The lock’s smart hub helps you secure and remove the Slapstick without needing a key, making the entire process simple, fast, and intuitive!

Designer: Jeongwoo Seo

The way the Slapstick Smart Bicycle Lock works is simple. It snaps in place and secures itself thanks to a metal stub at the bottom that twists to lock the Slapstick. Once locked in place, it opens using the button on top with a built-in fingerprint reader. You can use your smartphone to lock or unlock it too, but there’s an undeniable elegance to just placing your finger on the circular sensor and watching the lock magically open on its own.

Designed in a range of colors, the Slapstick is fun, functional, intuitive, and brings a sense of whimsy and a pop of color to your bicycle. You can lock it around the frame when not in use and it still looks good, unlike other boring-looking locks. It’s designed to be waterproof, and charges using a contact-based charging hub on the side of the lock, accessible behind the textured silicone flap. If ever the battery on the lock dies while your bicycle is fixed to a pole, the Slapstick accepts reverse-wireless-charging through your smartphone too, helping you easily get out of a potential fix!

This stylish lock is the smartest and easiest way to keep your bike safe

Although they never really went out of fashion, non-electric bicycles have recently seen a surge in popularity. Perhaps it’s because of a renewed interest in fitness and health or as a counter-movement to the increasing popularity of e-scooters. Either way, it’s definitely encouraging to see more people of all ages discovering the joys and benefits of biking these days, whether it’s for commuting to work or just having fun. Unfortunately, that popularity might also bring about an increase in bike thefts, which translates to a growing need for bike locks. These are a dime a dozen, of course, but since we live in modern times, it’s only appropriate that the humble bike lock gets an upgrade, like this simple yet innovative keyless lock that makes securing your bike as simple as locking your car.

Bike locks come in all shapes and levels of complexity. Some are simple chains that you access with a traditional key. Others do try to be smarter and utilize a motor for hands-free operation. Both, however, come with their own disadvantages. Keys are easily lost, and motors easily break or lose battery quickly, leaving you unable to even use your bike. The LAAS Keyless O-Lock, in contrast, is so smart and so integrated into your bike you might even forget it wasn’t an original part of the bike in the first place.

Lock Manually – To avoid the use of a motor.

Unlock Through the App – Open the lock via your phone whenever you need.

On the outside, LAAS O-Lock is a simple ring that attaches to the bike’s frame and around the rear tire, making it blend seamlessly into your bike’s appearance. There are no motors inside, which means fewer parts that could potentially break or stop working, so you will have to manually lock the O-Lock. Unlocking it, however, is as simple as whipping out your phone and tapping a button in the app. It only takes three seconds to unlock the ring, and you can even do that while you’re still walking toward your bike.

Share LAAS Keys to Friends – Recipients don’t even need an account.

In addition to the ease of use, LAAS O-Lock also brings a convenience that you’d find in smart home locks these days. Since it can unlock using a smartphone app, you can easily share access to that lock with family and friends. Of course, it uses encryption technologies to ensure that only authorized people can unlock it. With no keys, however, you don’t have to worry about someone else losing or getting access to that key either.

Made from hardened stainless steel, the O-Lock is not only durable but also rust-free. It also looks handsome as well, easily blending with your bike’s design. The lock is trivial to install, and there are add-ons to make it fit any bike, as well as a chain that lets you secure your bike to a post.

For only $93, the LAAS Keyless O-Lock offers not only the smartest and most convenient way to unlock your bike but also some peace of mind knowing that your trusted two-wheeled metal steed is safe and secure all the time.

This smart lock concept keeps a watchful eye on sliding doors and windows

Although people have been keeping their valuables at home for ages, our homes themselves have now also become more valuable because of the plethora of advanced devices that power them. Smart locks for smart homes are becoming more common in the market, even though not everyone is still convinced of their foolproof security. That said, threats don’t only come through the front door, though, and typical smart locks can’t do anything about windows or other types of doors, for that matter. There is definitely a market waiting to be conquered here, and this smart lock module concept is designed specifically to target one particular type of door or window, the type that slides open to give access to the people and treasures inside your humble abode.

Designer: Haechan Ryu

Typical smart door locks are designed to work only with the most common type of front door, the one that has a knob to turn and swings open or close. Their designs are pretty much pointless for sliding doors, which are sometimes easier to break into because of their location at the back or sides of houses. This kind of door offers an opportunity to design not only a different type of lock but also a lock that offers a convenience you might not be able to have with the conventional smart door lock.

The Plus Link Z concept, designed to work with a real-world Plus Link smart home security platform, is practically the combination of a smart door lock, a security camera, and a slide door opener. The first two functions are pretty much on par with any kind of smart lock, allowing the homeowner to remotely lock or unlock a door as well as keep an eye on people outside the door. It might be possible to eventually add some sort of face recognition to this external camera, but monitoring is its primary purpose for this design.

What makes this IoT security module a little different is that it can also automatically open and close the sliding door. Typical smart door locks can only lock and unlock doors, leaving you to manually push or pull the door. The Plus Link Z uses motorized gears that run the door’s top frame to slide it left or right. Because of this design, it isn’t necessary to change or modify the door itself, and you simply have to install the security module above it and the attached camera on the outside.

The Plus Link Z concept, while innovative, also looks a bit complicated and probably needs a professional to install it. It also raises concern whether those gears will eventually damage the door frame through its friction. Nonetheless, the idea itself is commendable in trying to tackle an often overlooked security problem at home, where the front door might be smartly secured while the other doors and windows are left vulnerable to a simple break-in.
