A clever 3D printed component is helping Decathlon turn scuba-masks into ventilators

An ingenious hack is allowing doctors to repurpose snorkeling masks into makeshift ventilators. Approached by doctors in Italy, Isinnova teamed up with Decathlon to design a 3D printed component that could easily fit onto existing snorkeling masks. Turning them into efficient respirators that could be used to aid patients of the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.

Called the Charlotte Valve, this component has been made available on Isinnova’s website and is free for use. They’ve filed for a patent too, to ensure that the valve isn’t commercially produced and sold for a profit. The patent remains free for all, to ensure that hospitals, clinics, and medical staff can always access life-saving technology for no cost. Decathlon has been cooperating extensively with physicians in Lombardy to supply hospitals with their scuba masks, retrofitted with the Charlotte Valve mod.

My scuba diving experience at the Great Barrier Reef was a pretty awesome one; the guys strapped me up in a wetsuit with all this heavy gear and I had a fascinating dive. If there is one thing that I would like to change about it, then it has to be the dive goggles. I have a high prescription number and the scuba gear usually comes generic numbers to the glasses. ‘Control Your Sight’ are goggles that feature number customization.

What this means is that you can customize the lens of each goggle to suit your prescription number. There is a knob on either side of the goggles that adjusts the deflection ratio as the silicone t-oil packed is inserted into the swimming goggle. Simply amazing and do want!

After working on its sea legs for some time, Google Street View is ready to take users on virtual scuba expeditions through six living coral reefs with the first underwater panoramic images to hit the service. In partnership with The Catlin Seaview Survey, Mountain View created the on-rails snorkeling experiences using undersea pictures from Heron, Lady Elliot and Wilson Islands at the Great Barrier Reef, Molokini Crater and Hanauma Bay in Hawaii and the Apo Islands in the Philippines. Combined with views from Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, the new underwater tours might make for a respectable, desk-based vacation. Interested in paddling through the briny depths?
