TDK breaks the Hard Drive density limit, could go on to develop super-sized storage

TDK breaks the Hard Drive density limit, could go on to develop supersized storage

While the old-fashioned hard drive isn't as fast or slender as an SSD, it can still lord its greater capacities and cheaper price over its upstart rival. TDK thinks it's extended the mediums lead in that area by tweaking the magnetic heads and recording medium of the hardware -- increasing the areal density of a unit to 1.5 TB per square inch. It means that we could see 1TB platters arriving in 2.5-inch laptop drives and 2TB platters in desktop modules, meaning even your commuting machine can store all of your heftiest data with ease.

TDK preps its first weatherproof speaker, we go hands-on

Back at IFA we spent most of our time handling new tablets and Win 8 devices, but, given that the show has grown into something of a mini-CES, there was news in almost every product category, portable audio included. TDK announced a trio of speakers that week, and though we didn't get hands-on in Berlin, we got a second chance tonight at a New York City press event. In particular, the company is showing off its first ruggedized product, the Wireless Weatherproof Speaker. As you can see in those photos down there, it has all the stylings of a run-of-the-mill portable speaker, except it also happens to be IP64-certified against the elements. When TDK talks about its durability, it talks about liters of dousage, so a splash on your next beach vacation shouldn't be an issue.

As for audio, it has two speakers up front, a subwoofer and two passive radiators 'round back. TDK declined to clarify the wattage, but we'll say this: the little guy is powerful enough that we could hear it over the din at Pepcom, a local press event. And, TDK had a larger, more powerful speaker playing nearby, and we still had no problem hearing the song coming from the weatherproof model. Granted, then, this was hardly the best scenario to evaluate audio quality, but we did sense that the treble was a bit trapped compared to the bass, which came through loud and clear. Lastly, there's a rechargeable battery inside, which TDK rates for up to six hours of runtime. It'll go on sale in late October for $250, but in the meantime help yourself to some first-hand shots below.

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

TDK’s Wireless Charging Cube pumps out the jams, juices your Qi devices and resists water (video)

TDK's Wireless Charging Cube pumps out the jams, juices your Qi devices and resists water

Although TDK mentioned its Wireless Charging Cube at IFA with the rest of its latest portable audio wares, it wasn't until today that we got a look at the speaker. The six by six by six-inch (yes, you read that right) unit features the same retro, black and gold aesthetic as TDKs other Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR speakers, but it's notably housing a Qi-compatible inductive charging base at the top (just like JBL's Lumia-styled Power Up speakers). Along with being splash-resistant enough to stay safely within range of your sink, an internal rechargeable battery will net you roughly six to eight hours of untethered play time. We had a very brief ears-on with this $400 unit, so join us past the break for more details and our initial impressions.

TDK Wireless Charging Speaker: Play & Charge At The Same Time

Usually, when I play music on my phone, it drains the battery, unless I have it docked. Thanks to this new charging dock/speaker from TDK, I can play and charge at the same time, without any wires or even a dock connector. Now that’s pretty neat, because I wouldn’t want to give the cable squid under my desk and computer more cables to procreate.

The TDK Wireless Charging Speaker comes with a built-in Qi-compatible inductive charging pad on top, allowing you to charge your device while it’s playing music. Naturally, this sucker comes with Bluetooth, so you need no wires at all to play your tunes either. The built-in rechargeable battery will provide you with 6 hours of playback, though it’s unclear if the inductive charging works when on battery power, or if only when plugged in.

It also is weatherized for outdoor use, and comes with four full range left/right speakers, a ported subwoofer, a 3.5mm input for non-wireless connections as well as a 1 Amp USB charging port. All this wireless wizardry doesn’t come cheap. The TDK Wireless Charging Speaker will retail for $399.95(USD).

TDK introduces new wireless Boombox and two new weatherproof speakers

TDK introduces new wireless Boombox and two new weatherproof speakers

TDK's Boombox rocked minds and windows alike with its modern take on a retro classic. Buoyed by its success, the casette-maker of old is back with new audio hardware at IFA. Three devices, again on the speaker front. First up is the Boombox Wireless, which is a similar, but updated, design from the original and features not only streaming sans cables via Bluetooth, but inductive charging, too. If you don't want to cut the cord completely, there's a 3.5mm aux input, USB slot for charging plus an FM radio and headphone output. Next up is the Wireless Weatherproof Speaker, which despite being described as "rugged" and boasting an IP 64 weather compliant design, looks like any regular device. It, too, has Bluetooth streaming and inductive charging, along with 3.5mm input and built-in microphone. If these two were all looking a little bit oblong, then the curious Wireless Charging Cube might be for you. Yep, it's Bluetooth streaming and the same wire-free charging, but this time that goes both ways. Plonk your Qi induction compatible device on top, and it'll juice that while you jam (there's a non wireless charging / charger version also.) How much do these slabs of sound cost? The Boombox is $399, the Wireless Weatherproof is $250 while the Wireless Charging Cube is $399. Not a peep on availability at this time, we'll connect you up though, once we get it.
