EDITOR'S QUOTE:

Whether you’re looking for a productivity powerhouse or a device for creative expression, the TECNO Phantom V Fold2 5G is a standout choice in the foldable market, offering an excellent balance of cutting-edge technology, premium design, and sustainability-focused innovation.

TECNO’s Phantom V Fold2 5G sets itself apart in an increasingly competitive market for foldable smartphones by combining aesthetics, performance, and forward-thinking design choices. With its large foldable screen, durable build, and smart AI features, the Phantom V Fold2 5G feels like a step forward, combining form and function in ways that aim to enhance productivity and creativity.

Designer: TECNO + Loewe

My review unit, the Loewe. edition, goes beyond being another foldable phone. It’s designed for those who appreciate cutting-edge tech, luxury, and sustainability. The collaboration between TECNO and the German brand Loewe has brought a new level of craftsmanship, blending eco-conscious design with high-end aesthetics. Let’s dive into every aspect of this phone to see whether it lives up to its expectations in form and function.

Aesthetics and Design

The TECNO Phantom V Fold2 5G design immediately catches attention, especially the Loewe Edition, which blends premium aesthetics with practical everyday use. The Rippling Blue and Karst Green editions bring their own luxury flavor. However, what’s impressive about the Phantom V Fold2 5G is how these design elements translate into a seamless user experience.

The Rippling Blue edition, crafted with eco-friendly leather, gives the phone a textured, high-end feel that looks great and makes the device more practical for daily use. The texture ensures a better grip, which is crucial when holding such a large device. I found that even during more extended periods of use, the grip felt secure, reducing the chance of the phone slipping from my hand. Its ability to resist dirt and fingerprints also makes a big difference; there’s no need to constantly wipe smudges off the back, keeping the phone as pristine as the day it came out of the box.

On the other hand, the Karst Green version features a marble-patterned fiberglass back, a significant upgrade in terms of durability. It feels notably lighter than a glass-backed foldable while maintaining a premium touch. This was particularly noticeable when using the phone throughout the day—taking it in and out of pockets, placing it on different surfaces, and handling it during daily tasks. The fiberglass material gives you confidence that the phone can handle the occasional bump or drop without adding unnecessary weight. Despite being 25% lighter than glass, the 100 times better drop resistance means you can carry it without worrying too much about accidental damage, which is always reassuring.

From a size and weight perspective, the Phantom V Fold2 5G balances portability and functionality. When folded, it’s compact enough to fit in most pockets and easy to hold in one hand for quick tasks, measuring 156.5 x 72.9 x 11.78 mm. I found the folded size ideal for checking notifications, scrolling through social media, or responding to texts. However, when unfolded, it transforms into something far more versatile. The device expands to 156.5 x 141.2 x 5.52 mm, offering a large, tablet-like display perfect for more immersive tasks like watching videos, editing documents, or gaming.

The 249g weight feels surprisingly light given its foldable form factor, and it’s well-balanced in hand. Whether folded or unfolded, I didn’t feel strain during longer use sessions, a common issue with heavier foldables. The weight is distributed evenly, so the phone doesn’t feel top-heavy or awkward in either configuration, making it easy to carry around throughout the day without discomfort.

One feature that enhances everyday use is the 3D micro-arc curved frame. The phone’s pebble-like shape feels smooth and natural in the hand, making it easy to grip. This design minimizes sharp edges, which helps make the device feel comfortable to hold, even for extended periods. The rounded edges are subtle, but they make a noticeable difference compared to a more squared-off foldable that can dig into your hand after a while.

The aerospace-grade droplet-shaped hinge is another standout feature. You’ll first notice how smoothly the phone opens and closes. There’s no stiff or awkward resistance—it’s a fluid motion that feels precise and well-engineered. This hinge supports 400,000 folds, which means it’s built to last. After repeated use, I didn’t notice any significant wear or creaking, which is reassuring for a device that literally hinges on this kind of mechanism. The crease in the middle of the screen is minimized to 0.1mm, making it barely noticeable during use. Whether watching videos, reading, or working on documents, the crease fades into the background, and you quickly forget it’s even there.

Another practical feature is the hinge’s ability to hover at angles between 30° and 120°, which turns the phone into a hands-free device. This comes in handy for video calls, streaming, or even following recipes without needing to prop the phone up awkwardly. It’s easy to adjust the phone to your preferred angle and stays securely in place without slipping.

For those concerned about everyday wear and tear, the IP54 rating provides peace of mind. While it won’t survive being submerged in water, the rating means it can handle splashes and dust exposure without issue. This is helpful if you’re using the phone outdoors or near water, as you don’t have to be as cautious as you would with a non-rated device. The outer display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which helps with scratch resistance and adds durability. Throughout my usage, I didn’t notice any significant scuffs or marks on the outer display, even after sliding it in and out of pockets and placing it on various surfaces.

Ergonomics

Despite its large size when unfolded, TECNO has ensured that the Phantom V Fold2 5G remains comfortable and easy to handle. The device’s weight is well-balanced, and the marble-patterned fiberglass material offers excellent grip without feeling slippery. The foldable design adds another layer of ergonomics, as the phone can be propped up at different angles for hands-free use. This is perfect for video calls, watching movies, or using split-screen apps without holding the device.

The side-mounted fingerprint sensor is intuitively placed for easy access, and it works seamlessly, unlocking the phone quickly with just a touch. The volume buttons are also conveniently positioned, though users with smaller hands might find them slightly out of reach during one-handed use. The overall button placement and design make the phone comfortable for prolonged use.

Phantom V Pen Integration

Phantom V Pen: Productivity and Precision

The Phantom V Pen significantly enhances the TECNO Phantom V Fold2 5G, turning it into a versatile tool for both productivity and creativity. Weighing just 10g, the pen is light and comfortable to use for extended periods, whether you’re jotting down notes, sketching, or annotating documents. Its integration with the foldable display is seamless, making tasks like handwriting recognition and calculations quick and efficient.

One of the pen’s standout features is its remote control functionality, which adds an extra layer of versatility. With its two buttons, you can control presentations, media playback, and even take photos—making it particularly useful for business users or those on the go. The remote functionality is especially handy during meetings or when navigating through slides without needing to touch the device.

The pen’s precision is supported by its super-resolution algorithm, ensuring a smooth and responsive experience, whether you’re sketching on the 7.85-inch inner screen or making detailed annotations. Creatives will find the pen particularly useful for more intricate work, where accuracy and control are paramount.

With up to 14 days of battery life on a single charge, the Phantom V Pen is a reliable tool that doesn’t require constant charging, which is ideal for professionals who need it throughout the day. Its range of features extends the overall functionality of the Phantom V Fold2 5G, making it a valuable addition for those who want to get the most out of their foldable device.

Performance

From the moment you start using the Phantom V Fold2 5G, it’s clear that performance is one of its strengths. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chipset, this phone doesn’t break a sweat, and it handles just about anything you throw at it. Whether it’s casual multitasking, switching between apps, or diving into high-end gaming, the phone remains snappy and responsive. With 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, you’ve got more than enough room and power to handle everything from daily tasks to more demanding workloads.

The experience is elevated by two AMOLED screens offering 120Hz refresh rates. The 6.42-inch outer screen is perfect for those quick, one-handed tasks, while the 7.85-inch foldable inner screen is where the magic happens. The colors are vibrant, the blacks are deep, and everything looks crisp and smooth, whether you’re watching a video or working on multiple apps simultaneously. The larger display is a treat for multitasking—you can open two apps side by side without feeling cramped.

AI-Powered Features

The Phantom V Fold2 5G stands out because TECNO’s AI Suite is seamlessly integrated into the phone. It’s a productivity booster in every sense. The Ella AI Assistant is like having a personal assistant on call, whether you’re pulling up search results or managing tasks across the phone. It’s surprisingly smart and smooth, handling over 400 system functions—from switching wallpapers to optimizing your settings in real-time.

For those who often juggle between documents and need quick summaries, AI Summary instantly pulls essential details from PDFs or websites. This feature alone saves a ton of time. AI Translation works wonders for voice calls and face-to-face conversations, especially with multiple languages. And for the content creators, AI Artboard and AI Wallpaper are there to help. AI Artboard turns your quick sketches into legit artwork, while AI Wallpaper allows you to create unique backgrounds based on a few simple words.

Gaming and Everyday Use

For gamers, the Phantom V Fold2 5G delivers a solid experience. The MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ and high touch sampling rate make gaming buttery smooth, even with graphic-heavy titles. The 360Hz touch sampling rate ensures responsive controls, which makes a difference in fast-paced games. Whether running apps, browsing, or playing high-end games, the device stays cool and doesn’t lag. The 2K+ resolution on the larger display adds an extra layer of immersion when gaming, making the visuals pop.

Even during regular use, the performance holds up without a hitch. Apps open quickly, there’s no noticeable stutter, and the multitasking experience with the FreeForm feature is seamless. Multiple apps can run side by side without any lag, making the most out of that larger screen. It’s a breeze whether you’re responding to emails, watching videos, or switching between tasks.

Battery Life and Charging

Now, regarding battery life, the 5750mAh Aircell battery is one of the reasons why this device works so well for power users. It can last all day, even with heavy use, like video streaming or social media browsing. TECNO claims up to 9.22 hours of continuous TikTok use and over 19 hours of Facebook scrolling, and based on my experience, those numbers hold up.

The 70W Ultra Charge gets you from 0 to 50% in just 20 minutes. That’s a huge time-saver when you’re in a rush. And if you prefer wireless charging, the 15W wireless charging option is handy, making it easier to top up without cables.

Camera Performance

TECNO has packed the Phantom V Fold2 5G with a robust camera system that includes five lenses, offering a versatile photography experience. The triple 50MP camera setup is a highlight, providing professional-grade photos in various settings. The primary 50MP lens features a large 1/1.3” sensor, which excels in low-light environments. Combining the large sensor and TECNO’s AI-powered Universal Tone technology ensures photos come out clear, vibrant, and accurately toned, regardless of the lighting.

The portrait camera, another 50MP lens, has 2x optical and 20x digital zoom. This lens is ideal for capturing professional-grade portraits with crisp details and a natural-looking depth of field. Portrait mode performs exceptionally well, with accurate subject detection and a pleasing bokeh effect.

The ultra-wide 50MP lens is perfect for capturing expansive landscapes or large group shots. Despite the wide-angle view, images remain sharp and detailed across the frame, with minimal distortion. TECNO’s AI enhancements help maintain image quality, even when zooming in on wide-angle shots.

The Phantom V Fold2 5G’s dual front-facing 32MP cameras on both the outer and main screens offer the highest pixel count for a foldable device. These cameras are perfect for high-quality selfies, video calls, and vlogs. The camera system is bolstered by TECNO’s FreeCam system, which offers unique hands-free photography features. FreeCam Video, FreeCam Selfie, and FreeCam Long Exposure allow users to capture creative shots by simply unfolding the device and using voice or gesture commands.

Overall, the Phantom V Fold2 5G’s camera performance is versatile and reliable. It’s capable of delivering stunning photos and videos in various conditions. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or a casual user, the camera system offers everything you need to capture high-quality content.

Sustainability

TECNO has focused on sustainability with the Phantom V Fold2 5G, mainly through its partnership with Loewe. The back cover is crafted from marble-patterned fiberglass and pleated leather textures, combining premium aesthetics with eco-conscious design. This partnership underscores TECNO’s efforts to integrate sustainable materials without compromising the device’s luxury feel.

Additionally, TECNO’s Phantom V Fold2 5G packaging is made from recycled materials, reinforcing its commitment to reducing environmental impact across the product lifecycle.

TECNO PHANTOM V Flip 2 5G arrives with a larger external screen and plenty of AI

Following up on its stylish clamshell foldable last year, TECNO is unleashing a second-gen design with plenty of changes inside and out. As you might expect, the PHANTOM V Flip 2 carries plenty of AI chops, but that’s just scratching the surface. A newer and larger “Thru Pool” cover screen brings many of those features to your fingertips without even having to flip open the phone, while dual 50MP cameras turn the small phone into a mini camcorder. Whether you’re looking for a sleek foldable smartphone, a pocket-sized AI companion, or a reliable mobile studio, the TECNO PHANTOM V Flip 2 promises to deliver in style.

Designer: TECNO

The most telling upgrade is the one that you’ll immediately see, the new 3.64-inch “Thru Pool” cover screen that ditches the limited circular display of the first-gen TECNO Flip. Inspired by infinity pools, this new display covers almost the entirety of the phone’s upper back, leaving room for plenty of things to do. In fact, TECNO calls out the tedious “card-based” interfaces of smaller cover screens, boasting an interactive experience that’s almost on par with the internal foldable display.

This larger external screen also highlights the upgraded camera system composed of a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultra-wide angle shooter. With the Thru Pool screen as a viewfinder, users can enjoy more detailed selfies and richer videos, though the 32MP front-facing camera is no slouch either. Thanks to its foldable design and its ability to hold any folded position between 30 and 150 degrees, the PHANTOM V Flip 2 enables more creative shooting, even from difficult angles.

TECNO’s AI suite also makes an appearance, from the Gemini-integrated Ella assistant to image-generating AI Artboard to photo-editing Magic Eraser AI. TECNO at IFA 2024 reveals AI vision and AIoT products to advance Innovation For All

AI as a buzzword has many raising their eyebrows at their every reference, but like any emerging technology, it is something that will redefine human life in the years to come. From AI assistants that understand and carry out every query to analytical AI that makes sense of your notes and data to summarize them into digestible information to generative AI which lets anyone create images and words, AI is empowering people to make more efficient use of their time and resources. That technology, however, will only truly have a positive impact on human civilization if it’s made available to everyone rather than just an elite few. As part of its mission to bring advanced technologies to emerging markets, TECNO is now announcing at IFA 2024 its encompassing vision for AI as well as the AIoT experiences and designs to bridge the digital divide.

Designer: TECNO

AI Vision: Practical AI

To some people, “AI” is a vague buzzword, while others understand it only in the form of Apple Siri or Amazon Alexa. The reality is that AI encompasses a wide range of features and applications, but its most important facet is how it can be integrated into daily life in order to improve the quality of people’s lives. For TECNO, this goal involves not just fancy new features or complicated neural networks or large language models, but also AI that can be understood by everyone, requiring localization and integration with local apps in markets where TECNO operates.

One such example is the Gemini-integrated TECNO smart assistant, Ella AI. Its conversational style makes interaction feel more natural, like talking to a real human who can adapt to the dynamic nature of most conversations. Whether you’re asking for advice on what to wear based on the weather or suggestions for recipes, the TECNO AI Assistant offers a more intuitive alternative to the conventional one-question-one-answer systems of smart assistants.

TECNO’s AI vision also includes features like Real-Time Translation that breaks down language barriers and better connects people across the globe. There’s also AI Writing, which can summarize long walls of text to make them easier to comprehend or help improve your writing with proofreading and suggestions. And, of course, there’s also AI Search that puts the world’s information beneath your fingertip, and quite literally, too, with the now popular circle to search gesture.

AI Artboard takes the somewhat controversial generative AI technology and transforms it into a tool to help give users a creativity boost when brainstorming for ideas. AI Image Editing cleans out undesirable objects in photos or helps put together a comical collage of objects in a single composition. Whether it’s for fun or serious work, TECNO’s AI Assistant helps people get their tasks done faster so they can have more time for more important creative work.

TECNO is also showcasing its first-ever AI PC, the TECNO MEGABOOK T16 Pro 2024 Ultra. Powered by an AI-powered Intel Core Ultra 7 processor with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of storage, this AI laptop promises exceptional power to drive AI experiences, including those from Windows Copilot+.

TECNO Devices: Technology For All

Of course, AI isn’t the only focus of the technology company. At IFA 2024, TECNO is also unveiling its portfolio of devices that help bridge the digital divide and deliver much-needed technologies to emerging markets. First unveiled at MWC 2024 in February, the TECNO Pocket Go puts a twist on the handheld gaming PC market, combining a gaming computer inside a controller and AR glasses that offer a bigger screen than what these small handheld devices can offer. It also offers advanced AI head tracking and vibration algorithms to add a bit of spice to your games.

The TECNO MEGA MINI Gaming G1 shrinks a gaming desktop down to a more space-efficient size without compromising on performance and, more importantly, cooling. A whisper-quiet cooling pump ensures stable and consistent performance that both gamers and creators need to level up their game. Despite its minuscule form factor, it boasts an Intel Core i9-13900H processor and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card not just for raw performance but to also support AI-powered features.

New to TECNO’s lineup is the MEGABOOK K16S, designed to let entertainment lovers “See bigger, See louder” with its 16-inch widescreen display and 2.5W 4013 quadruple speakers. Running on an AMD Ryzen R7 5800U processor paired with AMD Radeon graphics, the laptop promises stunning visuals and performance as well as AIoT (AI of Things) support that lets it seamlessly multi-task between devices.

TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 ultra-thin Tri-Fold concept beats Samsung and Huawei to the punch

While foldables represent the next evolution of smartphones, the current crop isn’t exactly how we imagined these devices to be. When the likes of Samsung first teased the idea of phones that transform into tablets, that dream didn’t involve squarish tablets or thick and narrow phones. The ideal is a normal-looking phone that almost magically becomes a regular tablet when it unfolds, something that wasn’t easily feasible given the technology of the past two to three years. We might be on the cusp of the next stage of the foldable revolution, and TECNO is only too happy to show off not only a tri-fold device but one that is only 11.1mm thick when folded into a conventional phone.

Designer: TECNO

A phone with two hinges that fold in opposite directions is one of the ways we can get the best of both worlds, but it’s easier said than done, naturally. Not only do you have to consider the durability of the display panel that will bend at opposite angles in two areas, the thickness of the folded “phone” also becomes a conundrum. If bi-fold phones like the Samsung Galaxy Fold are already considered to be thick, imagine how much worse three layers would be.

That’s the boast that TECNO is making with the Phantom Ultimate 2 concept, a tri-fold device that is only 11.1mm thick when folded. That’s just around 2mm thicker than the average regular foldable, which is still thick but not by much. TECNO doesn’t give the exact dimensions for the unfolded tablet, but it’s bound to be really thin in that case.

This design gives us a regular 6.48-inch candybar phone that turns into a regular 10-inch tablet and vice-versa, delivering the best of both worlds in a single device. And if that weren’t enough, TECNO shows that the device also supports stylus input, making it an all-in-one entertainment and business computer in your pocket. There are various modes made possible by this novel folding design, though some might be a bit more questionable than others, like putting the sensitive foldable screen in contact with a table.

The TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 concept will be shown off at IFA 2024 in Berlin next week, though its existence hardly means it’s something we’ll be able to buy soon. Samsung has also shown off tri-fold prototypes, both of the “Z” and “G” varieties, yet none have come to market yet. Then again, the forerunner of foldable devices seems to be content taking a more conservative approach, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if TECNO or even Huawei would land this novelty on shelves first.

Tecno’s Foldable Journey: The Evolution in Design from Phantom V Fold 5G to V Fold 2, and V Flip 5G to V Flip 2

Tecno’s entry into the foldable smartphone market began with the Phantom V Fold 5G and the V Flip 5G. These devices introduced a fresh take on smartphone design, offering the flexibility of foldable screens and compact form factors. With the launch of the Phantom V Fold 2 and V Flip 2, Tecno has made notable improvements, focusing on design, functionality, and user experience. This article explores the changes between these first and second generations, showing how Tecno has refined its approach to meet modern needs.

Phantom V Fold 5G vs. V Fold 2: A Thoughtful Redesign

Tecno Phantom V Fold 2 with new stylus

Design and Build Quality

The Phantom V Fold 5G featured a bold design with a large, circular camera bump that stood out on the back of the phone. This prominent feature added thickness, making the phone feel bulkier. While it made a statement, the design wasn’t for everyone. Some found it too pronounced, disrupting the phone’s overall balance.

Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G rear-facing camera setup

Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G

Looking at the V Fold 2, Tecno appears to have taken a different approach, opting for a more streamlined and integrated camera module. The redesigned camera bump blends into the back of the phone, offering a cleaner look. This likely results in a phone that feels less bulky in hand, improving comfort during use. Adding a stylus is smart and appealing to users who want to take notes, sketch, or work on the go. This shift makes the V Fold 2 a versatile tool for personal and professional tasks.

Tecno Phantom V Fold 2

Display Improvements

The display on the V Fold 2 seems to show clear advancements over the first model. The V Fold had a decent screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, which provided a smooth experience, but users often noticed the crease in the screen, which detracted from the overall experience.

Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G

With the V Fold 2, Tecno likely addressed these issues. The new model looks like it offers better brightness, more accurate colors, and perhaps improved crease management, making the internal screen more durable and enjoyable to use. The cover display also appears to have seen improvements in size and usability, allowing users to interact with the phone more easily when it’s closed.

V Flip vs. V Flip 2: Embracing Trends with Functional Upgrades

Design and Usability

Tecno Phantom V Flip 2

The Tecno V Flip introduced users to a new form factor with its flip-style design, but it was clear that there was room for refinement. The V Flip’s design was characterized by a large, circular camera bump that dominated the front of the device when closed, along with a smaller cover display embedded within this bump. While this design choice was unique, it limited the functionality of the cover display, making it less practical for everyday use.

Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G Camera Setup

The V Flip 2, on the other hand, embraces the industry trend toward larger cover displays, significantly enhancing its usability. The cover display on the V Flip 2 looks larger and more functional, offering more screen real estate for interactions, notifications, and even quick replies without the need to open the device. This is a clear improvement over the V Flip, where the smaller cover display was often seen as a compromise.

Camera Bump Evolution

The camera bump on the V Flip 2 also appears to have undergone a redesign, moving away from the bold, circular module of the V Flip to a more integrated dual-camera setup. This change reflects a broader trend in smartphone design toward more streamlined, less intrusive camera modules. The V Flip 2’s camera bump will likely be smaller and more seamlessly integrated into the back panel, contributing to a more cohesive and modern design.

Tecno Phantom V Flip 2 cover display and camera setup

This evolution in design enhances the V Flip 2’s aesthetic appeal while making it more practical. The reduction in bulk around the camera area suggests that the device is easier to handle and fits more comfortably in pockets or bags.

Performance and Features

The V Flip 2 is expected to feature performance upgrades similar to those in the V Fold 2, including a newer chipset that supports faster processing speeds and better multitasking capabilities. The original V Flip was functional but not groundbreaking in terms of performance, so these improvements should be well-received by users looking for a more responsive device.

Battery life and charging are also areas where the V Flip 2 could see significant enhancements. A larger battery and faster charging technology would make the V Flip 2 more convenient for users constantly on the go, reducing the need for frequent recharging.

A Promising Step Forward

The transition from the Phantom V Fold to the V Fold 2 and from the V Flip to the V Flip 2 represents a promising step forward for Tecno. The brand seems to have addressed many of the shortcomings of its first-generation foldable devices, embracing design trends and enhancing functionality to appeal to a broader audience. Whether it’s the sleeker, more integrated camera designs, the improved displays, or the inclusion of a stylus for productivity, Tecno’s latest offerings appear ready to compete more aggressively in the foldable smartphone market. However, it remains to be seen how these changes will resonate with users once the devices are widely used.

For those who value a balance between cutting-edge technology, practical everyday usability, and thoughtful design, the V Fold 2 and V Flip 2 offer compelling choices. Additionally, price and value will play crucial roles in determining the success of these models as Tecno positions itself in the competitive foldable market.

For photography enthusiasts on a budget, this phone promises a lot. But how does it hold up in everyday use? After putting it through its paces, it’s clear that the Camon 30 Premier has plenty to offer.

Designer: TECNO

Aesthetics / Design

First impressions matter, and the Tecno Camon 30 Premier doesn’t disappoint. It sports a sleek design with a Gorilla Glass 5 front, an aluminum frame, and a stylish vegan leather back. You can choose between Alps Snowy Silver and Hawaii Lava Black, both of which look premium and feel great in hand. The IP54 rating means it can handle dust and splashes, though you’ll want to keep it away from water.

The 6.77-inch LTPO OLED panel, with its slim bezels, gives the phone a modern look. It supports HDR and a 120Hz refresh rate, making everything from scrolling to streaming smooth and vibrant. The flat-edged frame and gently curved edges ensure it’s comfortable to hold despite its weight. The buttons are conveniently placed, though the power button might be a stretch for smaller hands. The under-display fingerprint reader is quick and responsive, albeit a bit low on the screen.

Ergonomics

Holding the Tecno Camon 30 Premier feels like holding a piece of art. The aluminum frame, combined with the vegan leather back, offers a touch of sophistication that’s uncommon at this price point. The leather finish adds a premium feel and provides a good grip, making it less likely to slip out of your hand. The phone’s weight is balanced well, so it doesn’t feel cumbersome during extended use.

The placement of the buttons is intuitive. While the power button on the right is easy to reach, the volume buttons on the left might require some adjustment if you’re used to having them on the same side. The large, responsive buttons are easy to press, which is a nice touch. Although positioned a bit low, the fingerprint sensor is snappy and unlocks the phone quickly.

Performance

Under the hood, the Tecno Camon 30 Premier 5G packs a punch with the Mediatek Dimensity 8200 Ultimate chipset. Paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, it handles multitasking effortlessly. Whether you’re streaming videos, playing games, or juggling multiple apps, the phone keeps up without a hitch.

The 6.77-inch LTPO OLED display supports a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering vibrant colors and deep contrasts. While the screen is bright and clear, it could benefit from more peak brightness for those sunny days outside.

Software Experience

Running on HiOS 14, based on Android 14, the Camon 30 Premier offers a user-friendly experience. HiOS 14 introduces cool features like Dynamic Port 2.0, Tecno’s version of Apple’s Dynamic Island. This handy feature provides contextual info and easy interaction with system apps. The Camon 30 Premier performs admirably in benchmarks, holding its own against other mid-range contenders. It scores well in Geekbench and AnTuTu tests, proving it can handle various tasks smoothly. The phone maintains solid performance even under extended use, thanks to efficient thermal management.

Camera Performance

The Tecno Camon 30 Premier’s camera is its crowning jewel, making it a compelling choice for anyone keen on photography.

Daylight Photography

The primary 50MP Sony IMX 890 sensor shines in good lighting, capturing vivid colors and sharp details. The dynamic range is impressive, and the highlights and shadows are handled well. Occasionally, foliage might look smudged, but overall, the quality is top-notch. With its 3x optical zoom, the telephoto lens matches the primary sensor’s quality, though it adds more saturation to the colors. Indoors, it performs slightly softer but still delivers solid results.

Low-light Photography

Low-light performance is equally impressive. The automatic Night mode balances exposure and reduces noise, producing clear, vibrant images. The primary camera produces natural-looking night shots with excellent detail. The telephoto and ultrawide lenses also benefit from Night mode, maintaining good detail and color accuracy even in dim settings.

Selfies and Portraits

The 50MP front camera with autofocus is a game-changer. It captures detailed and well-exposed selfies, making you look your best. Portrait mode is particularly effective, providing a nice bokeh effect while keeping the subject sharp. The telephoto lens adds depth to portrait shots, capturing natural skin tones and beautiful depth of field.

Video Recording

Video recording on the Camon 30 Premier is robust, supporting 4K resolution at 30/60fps across all lenses. The primary camera produces sharp, detailed footage with vibrant colors. While the Ultimate video enhancement mode adds sharpness and brightness, the standard mode delivers more natural results. The telephoto and ultrawide lenses maintain high-quality video, preserving detail and dynamic range. The standard mode outperforms the enhanced mode in low light, offering accurate colors and less noise.

Overall, the Tecno Camon 30 Premier’s camera system is versatile and reliable, making it a fantastic choice for those who love to capture moments.

Sustainability

Tecno is making strides in sustainability with the Camon 30 Premier. The vegan leather back looks and feels good and aligns with eco-friendly practices. Tecno’s commitment to providing software updates and security patches extends the device’s lifespan, reducing electronic waste. This approach promotes sustainability by ensuring the phone remains functional and secure for years.

Verdict

The Tecno Camon 30 Premier 5G is a standout choice for budget-conscious consumers who prioritize camera performance. Its robust design, vibrant display, and versatile camera system make it a great option in the mid-range market. Thanks to the Dimensity 8200 Ultimate chipset, the performance is smooth, and HiOS 14’s user-friendly features enhance the software experience.

While the display could be brighter and the IP54 rating is basic, these are minor trade-offs for an otherwise excellent package. For those looking to capture stunning photos and videos without spending a fortune, the Tecno Camon 30 Premier 5G is a smart buy.

Top Design Innovations from Computex 2024: Where Technology Meets Aesthetics

One of the world’s biggest computer-centric tech expos has just ended and, unsurprisingly, a lot of the rhetoric revolved around AI. But if you walk around the showroom floor, another theme quickly becomes evident in the midst of new products as well as some not-so-new wares. Consumer tastes have evolved once again, even among those who would embrace the label of being a gamer. Design is no longer just a feature for the few but an important part of a product’s DNA. We’ve seen quite a wide range of designs across an equally wide range of products, from the eccentric to the elegant. Here are some of the most notable designs to grace our paths at Computex 2024 in Taiwan, showcasing not just the trends but also the innovations in the computing industry.

Cool Computing: PC Case Designs

Desktop computers have evolved from uninspiring towers to smoldering workstations with over-the-top lighting to a smorgasbord of designs that cater to a variety of tastes and interests. Computex 2024 is a glowing testament to not only the changes in design trends but also to the extent that some manufacturers will go to in order to appeal to their loyal fans.

ADATA XPG Invader X

Designer: ADATA

Winner of an iF Design Award, the ADATA XPG Invader X values transparency in more ways than one. Its clear front and side panels let you marvel at the neatly arranged components that power this gaming beast, including the tubes and RGB-lit fans that keep the box operating at maximum efficiency. Equally interesting, however, is the chassis’s ESG-compliant design, utilizing post-consumer recycled plastics and upgrade-friendly components. It’s a stylish, eco-friendly computer that tries to offset the carbon emissions of your gaming lifestyle.

Cooler Master Mecha Cases

Designer: Cooler Master

Who said computers needed to come in the form of boxes? Cooler Master definitely didn’t. With designs that come in the form of a robotic shark and a giant mechanical sneaker, these PC cases shatter expectations and misconceptions about how our computers should look like. And as hardware becomes smaller even as they become more powerful, it’s only a matter of time before these become the standard rather than the outlier.

PNY Aftershock Bubble Tea PC

Designer: PNY x AftershockPC

Electronics and liquids don’t mix but it becomes a mind-blowing mystery when you see the two together. And now, we don’t mean liquid cooling. From the makers of ramen-themed desktop towers, this Bubble Tea PC will have you not only scratching your head but also craving a cup of boba. Instead of a sugary and milky drink, however, it’s a luscious-colored coolant that has faux tapioca balls swirling around as it keeps your cool-looking PC thermally cool. This collab between PC maker PNY and case designer Aftershock isn’t a joke either but a fully functional gaming PC that’s ready to put a new spin on your cravings.

Power In Your Hands: Handheld Gaming PCs

While there are plenty of AI-toting laptops scattered around Computex this year, they are hardly the only computers vying for attention. Gaming handheld PCs are pushing the envelope not only in performance in a small form factor but also in terms of design. There’s definitely plenty of room for experimentation, and there are a few that have caught our attention and fancy.

ADATA XPG Nia

Designer: ADATA

An unexpected contender from a brand better known for its memory and data storage hardware, the XPG Nia focuses on the aspects often left out in the wake of specs and benchmarks. A tilting screen, for example, can drastically improve the comfort of staring at a handheld computer for long periods of time, while upgradable RAM in addition to upgradable storage gives the device a longer life than even some of the smartphones we have today.

ASUS ROG Ally X

Designer: ASUS ROG

The ASUS ROG Ally X is a fine example of refinement over sensational changes. The base design remains the same, but the subtle and sometimes invisible improvements deliver an almost totally different experience that’s a step above in terms of usability. Best of all, however, ASUS isn’t removing the OG ROG Ally from the market just yet, leaving consumers with the choice between affordability and power.

MSI Claw 8 AI+

Designer: MSI

The MSI Claw A1M was an odd one when it came out, but the Claw 8 AI+ cements the manufacturer’s position in the young handheld gaming PC segment. With newer, AI-friendlier hardware comes significant improvements that are necessary for such a small gaming device. It’s still rather unique in its use of Intel silicon, and it will live or die by that commitment. Its design, however, is also enough to make it a noteworthy contender in this fast-growing arena.

ZOTAC ZONE

Designer: ZOTAC

ZOTAC is another new contender, one that has its sights set on the name that started it all: the Steam Deck. While it resembles this progenitor in some aspects, the ZOTAC ZONE tries to take the design where Valve seems reluctant to go. Better hardware and configurable controls will sing to the hearts of many gamers, but the steep price tag could be a major deterrent as well.

Material Matters: Aesthetic and Sustainable Designs

Design innovation doesn’t just have to come from wild new forms or combinations of ideas. Even the materials used for products can have a notable positive effect on the user experience, especially when they delight not just the eyes but also other senses like touch. Bonus points if they also benefit the environment, ensuring there will still be a planet for consumers to live on.

ASUS Ceraluminum

Designer: ASUS

Laptop users are becoming more and more design-conscious. Even those who don’t tend to personalize the backs of their laptops want it to be something that will leave a lasting positive impression on bystanders, not to mention on themselves. Combining the durability of metal with the luxury of ceramic, ASUS’s new Ceraluminum material subtly elevates the laptop from a technological product to an art object. First used on the new ASUS Zenbook S 16, this material exudes beauty that you not only see but also feel every time you touch the laptop or lift its lid.

TECNO CAMON 30 Series LOEWE Design Edition

Designer: TECNO

Paying homage to both coffee lovers and environment-conscious consumers, TECNO and LOEWE designed a back cover material that gives waste coffee grounds new life. Using an equally eco-friendly process, this more sustainable material gives the TECNO CAMON 30 Series LOEWE Design Edition a distinctive appearance and texture that easily sets itself apart from the crowd. Plus, the use of color blocking also marks the phone with a modern style to fit the discerning tastes of modern consumers.

Creative License: Tools for Designers

All these wonderful designs don’t just pop out from thin air. Someone has to make them, from initial ideation to prototyping to manufacturing. Designers and creators naturally need tools that can meet the growing complexities of their work, and Computex definitely has quite a few in store for them.

Acer SpatialLabs Eye 3D Camera

Designer: Acer

Spatial computing, mixed reality, and the metaverse require a special kind of content, one that breaks free from the confines of flat, 2D space. Even in video meetings and live selling streams, 3D objects are becoming more in demand, offering not just viewers but also presenters new ways to connect and communicate. Acer’s new SpatialLabs Eye 3D camera tries to democratize that process, effectively giving anyone the ability to capture, record, and stream any real-world 3D object as a digital copy.

ASUS ProArt PZ13 Detachable Laptop

Designer: ASUS

As computers become more powerful and geographical boundaries become shorter, content creation can no longer be confined to a desk in an office or room. The ASUS ProArt PZ13 gives designers, artists, engineers, and everyone in between that kind of flexibility with its portable and detachable design. What makes this 2-in-1 computer different is that it’s part of the new breed of Windows computers running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip, promising improved performance and, of course, on-device AI capabilities.

Power to the User: Empowering Gamers and Creators

One thing that gamers, creators, and power users have in common is their need for power, both literally and figuratively. The ability to customize not only their experience but also the appearance of their equipment goes a long way in giving them the confidence to get their job done, and these designs definitely deliver that with a touch of pizzazz!

ASUS Project DALI E Ink Cover Laptop

Designer: ASUS

E Ink is no longer just for eBook readers. Now that it has color and is being used in signage, the eye-friendly and power-efficient display technology is finding its way to the most unexpected places, like the back of this laptop concept. Project DALI turns the laptop cover into a canvas for users of all walks of life to express themselves or simply have a different design every day if they want. All without draining the battery even when the laptop isn’t running.

ASUS ROG Mjolnir Portable UPS

Designer: ASUS ROG

Nothing scares a gamer or designer more than losing power in the middle of an intense playing or working session. Uninterruptible power supplies are a staple for these people, but if you’ll be getting one, why settle for a boring box when you can have one of the most powerful weapons in the universe? Shaped after the mythological hammer of Thor, the ROG Mjolnir is a power station with an attitude and, more importantly, the power and features to actually match.

Cooler Master MasterHUB Modular Stream Kit

Designer: Cooler Master

A typical computer keyboard has 87 to 101 keys or more, but sometimes even those aren’t enough for content creators, streamers, gamers, and advanced computer users. When you have to remember a bunch of keyboard shortcuts that differ from program to program, you’re putting a heavy burden on your mind that could be used for actual creative thinking instead. This modular MasterHUB stream kit and control center not only offers the power of programmable buttons but also lets you decide how you want those controls to be arranged and look.

TECNO CAMON 30 Series LOEWE Edition has a back made from coffee grounds

It’s arguable that coffee makes the world go round, but to some extent, it also does a bit of harm in the process. Our rapid and massive consumption of this beverage has resulted in no small amount of waste, from the plastic cups and straws that we throw away daily to even the grounds that often go into the bin. The latter is, of course, biodegradable, but even that takes time to decompose, during which time they pile up and pollute the environment. Waste coffee grounds can actually have other uses, from aromatic candles to even skin care, so you simply need a creative mind to figure out ways to reuse these traces of caffeinated drinks. Working together with famed luxury design marque LOEWE, TECNO has thought of transforming this waste product into a beautiful and sustainable material to grace the back of its latest flagship smartphone.

Designer: TECNO x LOEWE

With a reported average consumption of 2 billion cups every day around the world, it’s no surprise that waste coffee grounds can actually be an environmental problem. Even when they do decompose in landfills, their improper disposal releases harmful greenhouse gasses that slowly but surely kill the very planet that coffee trees grow on. Recycling these coffee grounds is, of course, a solution, but traditional recycling processes also use up plenty of water and energy.

In contrast, the back cover of the new TECNO CAMON 30 Series LOEWE Edition uses not only sustainable materials but also a sustainable process. The coffee grounds are processed without using organic solvents, don’t consume more water, and also use solar power. The result is a back cover that is composed of more than 20% bio-based material that gives the surface a unique texture that will delight your hand the moment it touches it.

You might not be able to tell that the TECNO CAMON 30 LOEWE Edition has a back made from recycled coffee grounds because of its distinctive green color instead of the brown that’s associated with coffee. This gradated color was chosen to be symbolic of nature, representing the natural life cycle of leaves. More interestingly, TECNO also opted to adopt a color-blocking style that not only makes the phone look modern but also gives it a bit of character.

This industry-first coffee grounds back design is available on all TECNO CAMON 30 Series models with no changes to their internal specs.
