Cook the perfect single serve of rice with this portable Japanese rice cooker!

Rice…I don’t think it gets appreciated enough so I am going to tell you how rice is a global food icon. It is found in every country and every cuisine, rice can be fancy gourmet and also comfort home food. Rice can be had for any day of the meal, unlike ‘breakfast for dinner’ no one says ‘rice for dinner’ or lunch or brunch because it can truly be eaten anytime, anywhere. Now that we all agree on its omnipresence in the food world, the Thanko Electric Bento rice cooker is here to make rice omnipresent – literally. This portable cooker will let you cook a bowl of warm rice wherever you are!

It is a perfect gadget for those who want to cook a single-serve in a short time and the LED light will glow when it is ready. It is very optimal for those who travel often or want fresh food at the office instead of takeout. The cooker has the capacity to cook 6 ounces of rice at a time and comes with a measuring cup for convenience. Add water, rice (pro tip: salt the water or use chicken broth to up the flavor!) and depending on the ounces it should be cooked between 14 and 20 minutes. Unlike the usual cookers, this particular device doesn’t let out steam or make any noise so it is discreet enough to use practically anywhere. It only weighs 2 pounds and is compact enough to fit easily in your bag.

What I love the most is that you can eat the rice directly from the container after cooking and that means fewer dishes to do! Rice is a quick meal that goes with everything, and Thanko lets you eat some anywhere, leaving your stomach full and soul feeling fulfilled.

This Desktop Fridge Is a Soda Can Vending Machine

Do you drink cans of soda to keep motivated during the day at work? You could get up from your desk and walk over to the vending machine, but that requires too much effort. What you need is your own desktop soda vending machine. This one from Japan should do the trick just fine.

Thanko’s compact desktop refrigerator holds up to 10 cans of your favorite drinks, and dispenses them with ease. Just load two cans onto each of its five shelves, and when you’re ready for an icy cold beverage, just push the appropriate button. The only problem with this design is that since it doesn’t require payment, you can’t charge your office mates if they want to pilfer one of your cans of Dr. Pepper.

The desktop soda vending machine is available from Thanko Japan, where it sells for ¥15800 (~$150 USD). I’m not sure if you can get one shipped to the US, but it’s worth a shot if you want one.

Shoulder Bag With Pop-Up Tablet Holder

bagtab2k-005

We thought the whole point of tablets is that you could easily hold them in your hands and wouldn’t need, you know, a lap to put them down on. Still, their portability doesn’t seem to be enough to discourage accessory makers from giving you the option of hands-free operation and we suppose that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Thanko’s got this Shoulder Bag With Pop-up Tablet Holder that ingeniously transforms from a bag, into a specially angled tablet holder. Just unzip, flip and enjoy using your tablet at hip level, while retaining full usage of both hands to do anything you want.

It’s 4,980 yen, or roughly $42.

Thanko thumb extension: regular sized thumb for people with small hands

Thanko Thumb

Japan surprises us again with a clever idea aimed at users with small hands: now that phones seem to be getting bigger, so should your thumbs.

There was a time where smaller phones were the most desirable. Not anymore, though, as every smartphone developer out there seems to be trying to outsize one another, with the Galaxy, Nexus and iPhone families being the main offenders.

Japanese manufacturer Thanko, aware of just how big the iPhone is in Japan and how users’ hands are way smaller in average came up with a concept to reconcile them. The Thanko thumb extension is, as it name indicates, a large thumb extension made out of soft silicone. This extension adds some 15 millimeters (a bit more than half an inch) to the user’s thumb, ensuring they can reach the total area of the phone without having to grab it awkwardly. Also, it has a stylus tip at the end for those users who prefer it.

Although the thumb extension is not being sold outside of Japan (where it retails for a bit less than $14 USD), Thanko has been quoted as being open to expand if the product proves to be successful, and we sincerely hope it does. It looks just adorable, if the video below is any indication.

USB Vibrating Head Massager

From the bizarre world of Thanko comes this Buru-Buru Helmet, a USB vibrating head massager. The adjustable helmet goes on your head, plugs in to either USB or runs on batteries and gently vibrates giving you a relaxing feeling (if you can get past the fact that everyone is staring at you because you look ridiculous). You can adjust the vibration levels to meet your stress levels. Does it really work? Does that really matter?

Thanko is a Japanese gadget firm that makes just about anything you can think of and a slew of things sane people wouldn’t think to plug their your USB ports. If you need a set of Santa boots to warm your feet using USB power, Thanko has it. If your butt gets too hot in the summer, get the Thanko water-cooled seat cushion. You get the idea, if it’s powered by USB you can find it at Thanko.

If your boss is a bosshole, and you really need something to help get rid of the headache from listening to him prattle on about spelling and punctuation constantly causes you (maybe that’s just me) Thanko has a USB head massager. It looks as weird as you might expect it too. It will undoubtedly mess up your hair, and will do nothing to impress that cute girl that works down the hall.

What it will do is adjust to fit most domes, no matter how gargantuan, and vibrate when plugged in. The idea is that it will help get rid of stress. If you need to use it and you don’t have a USB port, it can be powered by batteries.

Thanko Mitamanma Megane HD Camera Glasses: Google Glass Minus Google

While there are many futuristic uses for the heads-up display in Google Glass, several people I’ve met who were wearing them used them primarily to capture images and videos from their personal point of view. So if you don’t want to spend $1500 on a pair of real Google Glasses, you can get the camera part for less than 1/10th that cost.

Made by Japan’s Thanko, the Mitanmanma Megane HD Camera Glasses(JP) are designed so you can capture POV video on the cheap. Just place the glasses over your eyes, press the button, and start capturing video to a microSD card. Unlike Google Glass, however, that’s all these glasses do. If you start asking them where the nearest Starbucks is, you’ll be waiting a very long time for an answer. They don’t capture still images, and they won’t make appointments for you either.

Unlike other video glasses, these ones are quite minimal, weighing in at just 2.1 ounces (though a regular pair of sunglasses weighs about 1/4 of this). Also, they can’t be worn over other eyeglasses like Google Glass. They’re capable of capturing a (suspect) 1920×1080 resolution AVI format video at 20 to 30fps. They’re supposed to run for about 30 to 40 minutes on a charge. Here’s some craptacular sample video so you can check out the image quality:

I’m not sure if the frame rate gets any better than that, so they look like they’d be good for capturing animated GIFs and Vines more than full-motion video. Still, what do you want for a hundred bucks? You can get a pair of the Thanko Mitamanma Megane HD Camera Glasses from Japan Trend Shop for $112(USD) plus $12 for worldwide shipping.
