This gigantic bi-level toolbox is actually a workstation in disguise

When the world seemingly went crazy, and everyone was suddenly forced to work at home, we became more acutely aware of how precious and how little space we actually have at our disposal. Few people had an extra table to use as a workstation; fewer had extra rooms to convert into makeshift offices. Space-saving modular furniture became quite popular in the past two years or so, especially ones that could transform into different configurations to serve different purposes. That demand and interest gave rise to quite a few interesting designs and mechanisms that made that possible, including one cabinet that takes its inspiration from the humble toolbox to present a storage solution and workspace that can fold out of the way when not in use.

Designer: Benjamin Thut

Most homeowners are probably familiar with toolboxes, but one that’s popular among craftsmen is the bi-level toolbox. Thanks to a somewhat ingenious design that is now a bit commonplace, the box is able to store even more tools and parts than a regular box. The top half splits open to reveal layers of containers, making it almost an incredible feat to fit everything inside a compact storage unit.

Utilizing the same design principle, the Tool cabinet 490 implements space-staving storage that could solve many of the problems homeowners now have in keeping work and personal life separated. Rather than lying flat on the ground, the cabinet is like a bi-level toolbox standing on one of its ends, blown up to life-size proportions.

The mechanism remains the same, though, with the doors of the cabinet moving sideways to reveal two layers of compartments flanking the main body. Instead of containers, however, you have shelves of different sizes to hold books, files, and other items you might need to keep within arm’s reach. Thanks to the bi-level design, you don’t have to worry about these items getting in the way when you fold down the cabinet.

The main section of the Tool cabinet can serve different purposes, depending on how the cabinet is being used. It can be a workstation with a fold-out table that can be closed down at the end of the day. Or it can be a typical cabinet, with the central section reserved for hanging clothes and shelves for folded clothing and accessories.

Whether it’s at home or even in the office, the Tool cabinet 490 can be an efficient way to save space without sacrificing functionality or storage capacity. It even has wheels that make it possible to roll the entire contraption to any location, turning it into an agile and flexible solution for floor space problems. Its industrial and utilitarian aesthetics might indeed clash with some motifs, but those really pressed for space might not mind that too much if they can have a portable and multi-functional workspace hiding in plain sight.

Give your DIY + IKEA furniture a longer life using tools that guides users to drill the perfect holes

Cam & Dowel Jig is a collection of preset jigs and various tools that are designed to help guide users through designing and constructing their own bespoke furniture.

If you didn’t pick up woodworking as a hobby during the quarantine, chances are you at least tried. In a perfect world, we’d have the know-how to pick up some tools, some pieces of wood, and design our living rooms with our own collection of bespoke furniture. Alas, this is no perfect world so we’ll need some shortcuts. Luckily, David Needham of Kingfisher Design Studio has us covered with an intuitive tool kit designed to streamline bespoke, DIY furniture-building projects.

Designer: Kingfisher Design Studio

Dubbed Cam & Dowel Jig, Kingfisher designed the tool kit to help families and young couples build space-saving pieces of furniture that fit their home’s style and available floor space. Without the proper knowledge over where and how to acquire quality timber, the best means for measuring that timber, or even how to slice it, there’s no way we can design and construct our own furniture. That’s where Cam & Dowel Jig steps in.

The different jigs that comprise Cam & Dowel’s tool kit have been designed to streamline the process of constructing specific furniture pieces. For instance, the Shelf Jig keeps a T-shape that indicates accurate hole positions and depths for each piece to come together in the shape of a shelf. Describing the preset nature of each jig, the designers at Kingfisher note, “Numbered hole positions on the jig correspond to the relevant drill bit, ensuring precise hole positions are achieved for the supplied cam and dowel hardware.”

Comprised of a tool kit that has everything one might need to measure, cut, and create furniture out of timber, the Cam & Dowel Jig guides users through a step-by-step, furniture-building process. The jigs that are included in Cam & Dowel’s tool kit cater to spring-loaded construction, providing “accurate drilling guidance and precise hole positions.” The tools that are included in the kit are also familiar so users of varying competencies will feel prepared when constructing their bespoke furniture.

Cam & Dowel Jig comes with all the hardware, tools, and jigs for proper furniture building.

The holes created by the preset jigs make connecting pieces of wood a lot easier.

Red Tool Chest Mini Fridge: Beers Are Tools, Right?

Inspired by the red tool chests seen in garages everywhere, this is the Portable Tool Box Refrigerator with 2 Drawers and Lock from Whynter. Available on Amazon (affiliate link), the fridge is going to look perfect next to my actual red tool chest, which is directly below a classic 1989 swimsuit calendar. You know it was most recently accurate again in 2017, and will be again in 2023.

The mini fridge has 1.8-cubic foot capacity and measures 17″ wide, 21″ deep, and 32″ high. It features caster wheels with locks, two functional heavy-duty drawers on top for actual tool storage, an LED light inside the fridge, and a keyed lock to keep others away from your most valuable tools. I’m talking about beers here, just so we’re clear.

So, the question is: is it better to purchase a tool chest mini fridge for the garage to hide my stash of cold beers from my wife, or is it better to get another real tool chest to hide all the expensive tools I just bought? Either way, I’ve got the feeling this fairy tale isn’t going to have a happy ending.

This portable grill looks just like a classic metal toolbox!

I’m assuming there’s a major overlap between people who love grilling in the outdoors, and people who love DIY projects… and this toolkit-shaped BBQ grill is perhaps the coolest gift you could give those people. Designed to look exactly like the archetypal metal toolkit you’d find in your garage or toolshed, the BBQ Toolbox from SuckUK opens up into a nifty outdoor grill with two grilling platforms. a compartment for resting your grilling tools (skewers, spatulas, whatnot) and two racks for storing your spices, herbs, and condiments.

Perfect for a nice alfresco barbecue, the BBQ Toolbox comes in a handy, portable size, and is made entirely from steel and coated with heat-resistant red paint. An 8×15” main grilling area is large enough to serve up a meal for as many as 4 people. The secondary grill serves as a warming rack, letting you keep food like sliders or hot dog buns warm while you grill up patties and sausages. When you’re done with your meal, lift the main grilling platform to discard your coals and give the entire toolbox a quick wipe-down before folding it up and carrying it back home. I’d advise you to store this bad-boy in your kitchen, though… you don’t want to accidentally carry your screwdriver, hammer, and wrench-set to your barbecue!

New Craftsman Toolboxes Can Be Unlocked with Your Smartphone

Tools are pretty expensive, which is why we buy expensive toolboxes, so we can organize them and lock them up so our tools are safe. The problem with toolboxes are the keys. If you lose your key, you are going to have to replace your toolbox – or at least call a locksmith. Well, Craftsman’s new toolboxes fix that problem.

Craftsman’s Pro Series storage units have Bluetooth-connected locks that can be opened and secured using a mobile app. As long as you don’t lose your smartphone, you should be okay. You can also set up a proximity lock through the app, so it will only open when your phone is within a certain range. The chest can also be opened remotely using your phone if you want to give someone else access while you’re away. It can even let you know if it’s been tampered with. Of course, you can still use a key if you want, but what fun would that be?

These toolboxes will be available this October in sizes ranging from 26- to 52-inches wide. The drawers can each support up to 200 pounds, so you can load them up with a lot of heavy tools. Here’s another great feature: Underneath the top lid is a larger compartment with a built-in six outlet power strip that has two USB ports for charging tools or other devices. These are some really useful new features.

It’s about time they updated the toolbox. Prices will range from $730 to $1550, depending on size and configuration.

The BBQ Toolbox: Hungry Man Dinner

There are only two things a man needs. His toolbox and a BBQ grill. The BBQ Toolbox combines both, creating a powerful new man-accessory. It looks like a toolbox from the outside, but it is actually a portable barbecue grill.

Now you can have one toolbox for your tools and another for your stomach. It features a warming rack, the space for your charcoal, an 8″ x 15″ grill surface, plus a tray for your grilling tools and spices.

The best part about this grill is that as you leave the house you can tell your wife you are off to fix that thing that needs fixing, but really you are off to grill and eat all of the stuff you aren’t supposed to eat. The BBQ toolbox grill will cost you around $120(USD) from SuckUK.

Guitar Amp Hacked into a Toolbox: Crank It Up to 11 and Hand Me a Wrench

If you have a failed garage band, you might as well get some value out of that amp that’s gathering dust in the corner, right? Just because your dreams of rocking out on stage are over doesn’t mean that lawnmower is gonna fix itself. Best to turn your old amp into a toolbox.

This cool toolbox was made by Redditor Maxatron4000 from an old Fishman guitar amplifier. As toolboxes go, it is pretty sweet. The drawers are made with 22-gauge sheet steel and have ball bearing slides for smooth sliding action. Those pulls? Modified 1/4″ audio plugs. Maxatron4000 was thinking about making these beauties to sell, but they just take too much time and work. Still, the result is really nice.
