The View-Master returns as a 3d capable device

View Master 3d 2

One of the most unlikely alliances of all time is bearing fruit and bringing back a classic gadget from our childhoods: the View-Master is getting ready for a come back!

Thanks to Mattel and Google teaming up the old classic View Master is getting ready for a second wind – with all the technological power of the last few years added on top of it. Turns out this new edition will pair up with smartphones and VR technology to create a completely new experience for the new century.

For those who don’t remember it, the View-Master was a toy gadget that allowed the public to see photographies by putting slides inside the viewer. The new version, though, will have users put their smartphones in instead, and using a special app, to travel virtual worlds, far away cities, or even outer space. All that for just some $30 USD.

The release date will be sometime this year, but as of now, neither Mattel nor Google have prototypes to show us. We’ve missed it so much we don’t mind waiting a bit longer, though, so it is okay.

Google & Mattel Relaunch the View-Master as a Kid’s VR Headset: VRiew-Master

Google and toymaker Mattel are taking the classic View-Master toy to its logical evolution by relaunching it as a virtual reality headset for kids. Instead of holding cardboard disks, the new View-Master holds a smartphone and has a pair of lenses built-in. The disks are still part of the system, though now the 3D content will pop up directly on top of them.

If you’re thinking that the new View-Master is just a dumb terminal, you’re right. Both the View-Master app and disks will work with Google Cardboard, which means they should work with similar VR headsets as well. That said, Mattel claims it’s working with ophthalmologists to ensure that the toy will be comfortable and safe for children to use. Here’s Engadget’s report on the new View-Master.

The new View-Master will be available this October for $30 (USD). It will come with a sample reel featuring classic View-Master images, a Space Shuttle tour and “a chance to explore a unique destination in 360 degrees.” Additional reels will be sold in packs of four for $15 per pack. Please let that unique destination be Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

View-Master Hacked to Play 3D Video: Old Toy, New Trick

A few years ago we saw a View-Master that was upgraded with digital picture frame displays. Alec Smecher took the classic toy to the next logical progression. He bought a very old model of the View-Master and installed a pair of 0.9″ 96 x 64 OLED displays, a Raspberry Pi and a laptop CD-ROM drive on it. After a lot of hacking and programming, he was able to make it play 3D video.

All of the electronics fit on the View-Master because this particular model has an attachment for a light bulb and two D batteries so that the toy could be used in low light. The Mini-CD actually sticks out of the top of the View-Master as it spins, a nod to the cardboard reels used with the toy. Alec also made the smallest possible modification to the case of the View-Master so that he could still restore it to its original state if he wanted to.

Alec says that his hack isn’t 100% done yet but as you saw in the video it does work. Check out Alec’s website for more details on his hack. I bet a lot of people would like it if Oculus VR released a View-Master case for the Rift.

Poppy turns iPhone into View-Master-like 3D display and camera (video)

Poppy turns iPhone into ViewMasterlike 3D display and camera video

Remember the View-Master? We've already seen goggles from Hasbro and Sanwa that transform the iPhone into a 3D viewer, but Poppy plans to spice things up by adding 3D photo and video capture to the mix. The device, which contains no electronics, is about the size of medium pair of binoculars and features a slot which accepts an iPhone 5. It's launching on Kickstarter today for less than $50, along with a matching app. We got the chance to take a prototype for a spin and it worked like a charm. Check out the gallery and campaign link below, then read on after the break.
