An Automated LEGO Gift-Wrapping Machine: Move Over, Gift Bags

Because wrapping gifts is hard work but building incredibly complicated LEGO machines is a piece of cake, YouTubers TheBrickWall constructed this ‘LEGO Wrapping Factory,’ an automated gift wrapping station built entirely out of LEGO. The machine is capable of scanning a package to determine its dimensions, then cut, wrap and tape the gift in a manner that can only be described as way better than I could ever do.

It’s hard for me to even fathom the amount of ingenuity that goes into a LEGO build like this. I mean I can barely follow the instructions that come with a regular LEGO set, and this doesn’t even come with instructions – you have to figure the whole thing out on your own. For reference, the last time I built a piece of IKEA furniture I had a handful of bolts and an extra leg left over at the end.

Sure, you could build a complicated LEGO machine to do all your gift wrapping for you, or you could wrap presents the same way I’ve been doing for years: kindly asking your mom to do it for you. And if she’s unavailable there’s always plan B: keeping the gift for yourself.

Harry Potter Wrapping Paper Isn’t Just for Wizards

If you have a muggle in your life that is a big Harry Potter fan, here’s the perfect wrapping paper for your Christmas gifts. You’ll pay 15 bucks for two rolls of the stuff though – not exactly cheap when Walmart has five rolls for less than that price.

What Walmart doesn’t have are rolls of paper with the Hogwarts crest or Platform 9 3/4 Hogwarts Express pattern. Neither pattern is overly Christmas themed so if you don’t use it all, it would come in handy for birthdays or other occasions.

Each red and gold roll has 2.7 yards of paper on it; measuring in at 30″ x 96″. Cast a credit card spell and grab some now at ThinkGeek. This is probably better option for most folks than that sausage scented paper.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It also happens to be a season of excessive waste, considering the amount of gift wrap and packaging people discard after unwrapping their presents.

Then along came Eden’s Paper and their plantable gift wrap. It’s eco-friendly wrapping paper that’s made from two layers of recycled paper. The cool thing about it is the fact that it’s got actual seeds embedded within the paper. So not only is it recyclable, but you can also plant the entire thing in your garden instead of discarding it.

The exterior pattern reflects what type of seeds are embedded in the paper. At the moment, there are five to choose from: broccoli, tomato, carrot, onion, and chili.

Eden’s Paper is currently raising funding for the gift wrap on Kickstarter. Back the project, and you can get one sheet of wrapping paper for £5 (about $8).

Every year, trash cans all around the world overflow with discarded gift wrap and packaging on Christmas morning. Some people take the time to unwrap their presents carefully on Christmas eve so the paper can be recycled, but the majority don’t have the patience (or simply don’t care enough) to do so. That’s where the plantable wrapping paper by Eden’s Paper comes in.

This unusual wrapping paper sports colorful designs that reflect what type of seeds are embedded in the paper itself. That means the entire paper is a giant seed packet that you can use to plant in your garden. How cool is that?

Naturally, it follows that the giftwrap is biodegradable, offering more eco-friendly options for its disposal.
