XCOM Fan Game Being Made in Excel: EXLCOM

Last year we saw The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening partially ported to Microsoft Excel using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Redditor crruzi is also using VBA and Excel to make his own XCOM game.

Crruzi says he just learned to use VBA for work and is making EXLCOM to sharpen his skills. EXLCOM takes place “between the events of XCOM:EW and XCOM 2, where a group of guerilla fighters try to liberate their city from ADVENT control.” Don’t expect 3D graphics here. EXLCOM’s graphical interface is closer to a tabletop RPG than a video game. That said, crruzi is implementing class skills, terrain effects and even a variety of weapons and equipment.

You can download a test build of EXLCOM here. It’s still in alpha though; crruzi has finished only the battle system and even then it’s bound to have bugs.

XCOM: The Board Game Is A Partially Digitized And More Complex Pandemic

Pandemic is a great game. It’s a co-op game that forces players to really work together, and gives a collective sense of impending disaster. It’s such a good formula that it’s quickly turning into a genre, spawning games like Forbidden Island, and the god-awful World War Z game that was obviously never, ever play-tested. Now it seems like this brilliant new formula has been expanded upon quite a bit by Fantasy Flight Games with some additional mechanics and an app that manages some of the more complex functions of the game.

It also doesn’t hurt that this new game is using the XCOM license, because XCOM is awesome. Each player is a member of the XCOM team, running around the world, keeping the population from panicking, and fighting aliens. To that degree, it sounds a lot like Pandemic, but with aliens, but that’s where the differences start. You also need to defend the XCOM headquarters from attack, complete missions to discover weaknesses in the enemy invasion plan, and manage the team’s income. With no base, no intel, or no money, you’re doomed.

We’re also interested to see exactly how the companion app works, as it’s not just an aid or calculator, it’s an integral part of the game. The app will perform some of the more complicated calculations and act as AI, and will be free for download with purchase of the game on iOS, Android, or on an actual computer. XCOM: The Board Game is coming out in “Q4 2014,” so it should be hitting shelves soon.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown invades iOS devices on June 20th

The world is under attack once more, and it's up to your squad of elite, turn-based soldiers to keep humanity safe. We've just gotten word that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is headed to a wide variety of iOS devices come this Thursday, June 20th. Everything from the iPad 2 to the fifth-gen iPod touch is getting a taste of Firaxis' XCOM effort -- should users choose to fork over the $19.99 asking price, that is.

Aside from multiplayer (which is coming via free update post-launch), the iOS version is just about the same as its console and PC counterpart -- you build up resources and strike back against the alien menace threatening to tear apart Earth, with the occasional break to torturously study the enemy via "dissection." Whether the enemy is still alive at that point, well, that's a question for your science team. For a full list of supported iOS devices, head below the break. As for Android and Windows Phone 8 support? "We've only announced plans for iOS devices at this time," was all a 2K Games rep would tell us. Not exactly a hard no, but not a confirmation either.
